2 26th Sunday In Ordinary Time Page 2 Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 1, 2017 Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus. Philippians 2:5 GOD S WAYS In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, The L s way is not fair! (Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God s mercy and love. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 4 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 ONE S LOVE IS SHOWN MORE IN DEEDS THAN IN WORDS!!! There is an old saying in Sports which I think is apropos to the parable of the 2 sons for this Sunday`s gospel. "It is not where you start that counts. It is where you finish." Jesus` parable teaches two truths. First: "Talk is cheap" if not followed up by actions. One can say what he/she wants about loving God. But, as St Ignatius Loyola pointed out, "One`s love is shown more in deeds than in words." Second: The only people who are able to really change their lives for the better are those who are humble enough to recognize and admit their own faults, failings and mistakes. Many people in their early years of their lives may have said "no" to God. But as their lives move on, they begin to see things differently and their "no" to God becomes a "yes". Someone may have made mistakes but then redeem him/herself and, by the grace of God, atone for these mistakes by making the rest of his or her life a lovely, grace-filled thing. Many of the greatest Saints of all time have done that very thing - they were great sinners who initially said "no" to God and who later changed their minds and said a resounding "Yes" to Him. Many of them did not start holy and docile. On the contrary, many of them initially refused, struggled, questioned and even disregarded the Father`s will. But somehow, grace prevailed. Grace always prevails in the end. Indeed, there is no sinner without a future, there is no saint without a past. St Augustine, to me at least, is the most obvious example. Let`s remember this one thing: People won`t be judged on one single act or stage in their lives. They will be judged at the finish line - on their whole life. Also, it is not where we start that counts, it is where we finish. You see, Christ, our Savior doesn`t give a hoot what our situation in life is. He won`t say to us, "Oh, I see you were a priest or a deacon or a nun or a bishop or a whatever. Enter into the joy of heaven." No! Rather, He will want to know what we did for Him in the least of our brothers and sisters. Did we feed His hungry? Did we give aid to His poor? Did we visit Him in prison? Did we help Him when He was alone and sick? We get the idea. Let`s say "YES" to God then do it. We will never, ever regret it. Guaranteed!!!! October too is the month of the Holy Rosary. Let us continue to hold our Blessed Mother`s hands. She loves each one of us without conditions. Let us stay close to Mama Mary ( Mother Mary) and we will not turn away from Jesus. God Bless you! Fr. Innocent Subiza SAVE THE DATE
We assist the needy with a variety of requests for help. Some of our clients are dependent on social services, while others just need some temporary assistance to make ends meet. We recently received a very special request from a father who is a refugee from Honduras. Through an interpreter, we learned that the client had fled his country after receiving death threats and witnessing the murder of his son s mother by local insurgents. He rode a train referred to as the beast the length of Mexico to get to the USA. The trip took him 3 days and he was robbed of all his possessions during the train ride. He then made his way north and is now staying in the RHA shelter here in Auburn. He has no possessions and wants to find work and then send for his son. The Request: The client informed us that he needs to travel to the Honduran Embassy in Los Angeles to obtain a passport in order to legally work in California. The Response: SVDP financed his train ride to LA and the passport fees so he can seek legal employment and ultimately leave the shelter. Hopefully, in time, he will be reunited with his son and they For more information & Tickets visit: Or call Sarah Or Suzie can start a new life together. Thank you to all our parishioners for all your generous donations and prayers as we strive to live the words of Our Lord and Savior: Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me. Mathew 25:40 Our Conference meets at 6:30 PM the first Tuesday of each month in the Beatitude Room. Please join us and make a difference in people s lives. Help phone number is
