1 Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church July 9, :30 a.m. Lectionary 14 The mystery of God s ways is sometimes hidden from the wise and intelligent. Jesus associates with the lowly and outcast. Like Paul, we struggle with our own selfish desires and seek God s mercy and forgiveness. We gather to be refreshed by Christ s invitation: Come to me, all you that are weary. Gathered around word, water, and meal, we find rest for our souls.

GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. Prelude Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein J. S. Bach ( ) A piece that Bach had begun earlier, this chorale prelude is said to be the final music he wrote before his death in At the time he was struggling with the results of a stroke and was nearly blind. Below is a portion of the chorale text. When in the hour of deepest need we know not where to look for aid; When days and nights of anxious thought no help or counsel yet have brought; Our comfort then is this alone: that we may meet before your throne And cry to you, O faithful God, for rescue from our sorry lot. Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Please kneel. Silence for reflection. God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. / 2 /

3 Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Rejoice in this good news! Stand and turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. Gathering Hymn #611 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. 4 Year A has already heard from this passage in the processional gospel for Passion/Palm Sunday, since Matthew cites this prophecy of a king arriving in Jerusalem on a donkey as fulfilled in Jesus. On this Sunday, the passage says that only the true king will bring peace. Thus the passage is linked with Jesus promise of rest. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Psalm 145:8-14 Setting: Ray Makeever The cantor sings the refrain, the assembly repeats it and sings it as indicated. Verses are sung alternating between the cantor and the assembly Refrain Tone Verses The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. LORD, you are good to all, and your compassion is over all your works. Refrain All your works shall praise you, O LORD, and your faithful ones shall bless you. They shall tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your power, that all people may know of your power and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. / 4 /

5 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; your dominion endures through- out all ages. You, LORD, are faithful in all your words, and loving in all your works. The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up those who are bowed down. Refrain Second Reading Romans 7:15-25a Usually in Paul the Greek word translated as you is plural, but in this section, Paul admits to the personal daily struggle of the baptized life. Aware of this war within our very selves, we gladly come to the gospel s word of rest in Christ. Word of God, word of Life Thanks be to God. Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Acclamation Sung by the cantor and repeated by all as indicated. Setting: Wayne L. 6 The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. This beloved passage, Come to me, and I will give you rest, contrasts with the earlier sentence, that Christians are indeed wearing the yoke of Christ. Some Christians have found such biblical passages about the Father s enigmatic will as fundamental to their faith. Nathan Söderblom, Bishop of Uppsala, died 1931 July 12 A winner of the Nobel Prize for peace for his efforts to unite peoples after the First World War, Söderblom also called attention to the revival of early church worship principles, and helped to lay the groundwork for the World Council of Churches.
