1 Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church November 19, am & 11am Lectionary 33a Our readings during November speak of the end times. Zephaniah proclaims that the coming day of the Lord will be filled with wrath and distress. Paul says it will come like a thief in the night and urges us to be awake and sober. Jesus tells the parable of the talents, calling us to use our gifts, while we still have time, for the greater and common good. In a world filled with violence and despair, we gather around signs of hope word, water, bread and wine eager to welcome the good news of Christ s coming among us.

At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand, as you are able, and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the c, ross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in processions adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. 3 Because Matthew s gospel uses money as a symbol for one s life, the passage from Zephaniah was chosen for its condemnation of misuse of money. Trusting in wealth, which is a particularly American temptation, is shown to be the dead end that it is. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 4 11am: Psalm 90 The Assembly sings the Psalm paraphrase together. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 On this Sunday, it is especially in this second reading that God s good news is proclaimed. It is God s will to save and to keep us in light, so that we may live with Christ. The Christian community shares with one another this encouraging word. Early Christians spoke of baptism as the light within and by which we live; thus we need not fear a life walking like the blind (Zeph.1:17). Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. [4]

5 Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Verse: Abide in me as I a-bide in you; those who abide in me bear much fruit. (John 15:4, 5) Gospel Acclamation Setting: Carl F. The English word talent meaning a person s natural ability arose in the fifteenth century as preachers allegorized this parable, applying the Roman coins to individual capabilities. A common use of this parable is to stress what Lutherans call law : we are obligated to use our talents to the best of our ability, or the punishment of hell awaits us. The parable also proclaims what Lutherans call gospel : all good comes from God, who provides us far more than we need, God s grace given in abundance for our use. Gospel Matthew 25:14-30 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. 11 NEWS AND NOTES Coffee Hour Hosts Needed After taking some time to get used to our new service schedule, we will once again be having treats at coffee hour. The job is simple! Bake, cook, prepare or even purchase a variety of treats, sweet and/or savory (cookies, muffins, doughnuts, fruit, veggies, chips, crackers, hummus, etc ) Bring them with you to church, and put them out as the 9am service is finishing up. Your treats can stay out so they can be enjoyed after the 11am service and you don t need to stay to clean up. Check the clipboard at the back of the church for open dates. He is best remembered for a letter he wrote to the congregation in Corinth, still struggling with the same problems that led to Paul's letters to them. As did Paul, he focused on the need for love among Christians. November 23 + Miguel Agustín Pro, martyr, died 1927 Pro grew up in a time when the Mexican revolutionaries accused the church of siding with the wealthy. He became a Jesuit priest, and worked on behalf of the poor and homeless. Falsely accused of throwing a bomb at a government official, he was executed, but not before crying out "Long live Christ the King!" November 24 + Justus Falckner, died 1723; Jehu Jones, died 1852; William Passavant, died 1894; pastors in North America Not only was Falckner the first Lutheran ordained in North America, but he published a catechism which was the first Lutheran book published on the continent. Jones was the Lutheran church's first African American pastor and carried out missionary work in Philadelphia which led to the formation there of the first African American Lutheran congregation (St. Paul's). William Passavant helped to establish hospitals and orphanages in a number of cities and was the first to introduce deaconesses to the work of hospitals in the United States. November 25 + Isaac Watts, hymnwriter, died 1748 Thought by many to be the greatest hymnwriter in the English language, Watts as a youth was critical of the quality of the metrical psalter of the time.
