Every week we pray for Don and Pam Leonard as they work together with Jasmine to coordinate Project Video in Thailand and China. We also pray for Pam Leonard as she fights her battle with cancer. Today Don Leonard is our guest preacher. We trust his message will be a blessing to you, and we hope you will be encouraged to continue praying for Don and Pam. If this is your first visit to Saint James, please fill out a Welcome to our Church card (available in the pew rack) and put it in the offering. Stop by the Visitor Welcome Center as you leave and pick up a small gift. Thank you for coming, and please come back soon. You are always welcome here at Saint James. THE NURSERY is not staffed, but it is open during the service. As a courtesy to others, if you keep your child with you, and your child becomes restless during the service,
2 please take him or her temporarily to the narthex or the nursery. (The service is broadcast on the TV in both locations.) SPECIAL POCKET HEARING SYSTEMS are available from the ushers for anyone desiring an amplified broadcast of the service. LARGE PRINT COPIES OF THE SERVICE ARE AVAILABLE IN THE NARTHEX. AS A PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP you are invited to read Psalm 119: , which is found on pages in your pew Bible. THE ORDER OF SERVICE PRE-SERVICE HYMN SING: This is your chance to request your favorite hymn. OPENING HYMN: Christian Worship #581 PASTORAL GREETING: Father, We Praise You Please stand for stanza 3 Pastor Albrecht THE INVOCATION P: Baptism is not just plain water; it is water used by God s command and combined with God s Word. Baptism works forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare. It is certainly not the water that does such things, but God s Word which is in and with the water, and faith, which trusts this Word used with the water: C: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Baptism means that the old Adam in us should be drowned by daily contrition and repentance, and that all his evil deeds and desires be put to death. It also means that a new person should daily arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. Let us, therefore, confess our sins to God and plead for His mercy. C: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess to You that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, 2
3 word and deed. We flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Have mercy upon us, and for Jesus sake, forgive all our sins. By Your Holy Spirit, increase in us true knowledge of You and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us, and has given His only begotten Son to die for us. Jesus paid the penalty for all your sins. Everyone who believes in Him has received the gift of the Holy Spirit and the promise of eternal life. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, I announce the grace of God to all of you, and by the authority of our Lord Jesus, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: (sing) Amen. P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. HYMN OF THANKSGIVING: Christian Worship #239 stanzas 1 & 2 Glory Be to God the Father PRAYER OF THE DAY THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 Printed on back cover The children of Israel were about ready to enter the Promised Land, but Moses knew he would not be able to go with them. The book of Deuteronomy is his farewell sermon to them. He urges them not to forget the LORD after they have settled down in the new homes God will give them. READER: This is the Word of the Lord. CONG: Thanks be to God! THE EPISTLE LESSON: Ephesians 6:10-20 Printed on back cover The Apostle Paul was no stranger to spiritual warfare. He warns us about enemies we do not see, and urges us to put on the whole armor of God. The belt, breastplate, shoes, shield and helmet are all designed to protect us. The sword of the Spirit can be used both to defend yourself and to attack your enemies. READER: This is the Word of the Lord. CONG: Thanks be to God! VERSE OF THE DAY: Christian Worship, page 40 3
4 THE GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 7:14-23 Please stand The conversation that began in our Gospel lesson last Sunday continues. The scribes and Pharisees ganged up on Jesus because His disciples were eating with unwashed hands. Jesus accused the scribes and Pharisees of hypocrisy because they used their own traditions to get around the commandments of God. Jesus then explained that it is not food that enters a person s stomach that makes you unclean. Jesus declared all foods clean. READER: This is the Gospel of the Lord. CONG: Praise to You, O Christ! THE APOSTLES CREED: Christian Worship, page 41 SERMON HYMN: Christian Worship #443 stanzas 1-2 & 5-6 Rejoice, My Heart, Be Glad and Sing SERMON: TEXT: II Corinthians 6:1-10 THEME: Sorrowful, Yet Always Rejoicing OFFERTORY: Christian Worship, page 20 OFFERING: Honor the Lord with your substance and with the first fruits of all your income. - Proverbs 3:9 OFFERING VOLUNTARY HYMN OF REDEDICATION: Christian Worship #481 stanzas 1 & 2 Please stand O God, Your Hand the Heavens Made PRAYER FOR OURSELVES AND OTHERS THE LORD S PRAYER BENEDICTION 4

8 FIRST A3 (ALL AGES ACTIVITY) ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13. Our youth group from preschool through those young at heart will have multigenerational activities one Sunday a month immediately following the 10:30 am church service. We will have fun VBS-style elements like devotional skits, crafts and games, some of the great "Boys & Girls Pioneers" traditions like an all ages Pine Car Derby, complete with an "Antique Car Show" and a special high school through adult racing category. We will also launch rockets, swim & more. We will start with a church-wide potluck, followed by a VBS-style skit devotion and songs, typically ending at 2:00 pm. The groups will divide when necessary into age categories for specific activities. We encourage parents and families to stay and join in the fun. If you would like to volunteer to help lead an age group, coordinate the church-wide potluck, volunteer, help create skits or more, please contact Pastor Dale or Terese. We will launch Sunday, September 13th immediately following the 10:30AM worship service. For that potluck, we ask families with last names beginning with A-H to bring a salad, I-P to bring a dessert and Q-Z to bring a main course. Bring your dish to share to the fellowship hall when you arrive, and remember to label your dish with your name. THE LADIES GUILD is collecting coupons from newspapers, magazines and packages, with expiration dates of October 10 and later. The coupons should be cut leaving a margin without damaging the coupon, and clipped together by month when deposited in the box. Old postcards and cancelled postage stamps are also collected, leaving a ¼ margin around the stamp to avoid damage. Campbell s soup labels and Box Tops and labels for education are also needed. THE SAINT JAMES LADIES GUILD meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 6 at 12:30 pm in the Fellowship Room. There will be no September meeting. PHOTO DIRECTORIES ARE HERE! They will be available for purchase on Sundays after the 9:00 service, Mondays after the SonRise service or during the week in the office. The directory costs $15. 8
