Combs Students During this Advent season, we will again be sponsoring an Angel Tree for 25 students at A. B. Combs, whose families are not able to provide Christmas gifts for their children. Through your support and generosity, we will help give these children and their families a joyous and happy Christmas. The instructions for providing gifts are as follows: Select an angel from the tree. Note the number of the angel. Record your name on the sign-up sheet beside the angel number you selected. Purchase gifts, wrap them, and label each gift with the angel number. Then place them in a bag/box also labeled with the angel number. This year we have been asked to consider buying each child 1 outfit, 1 toy, and 1 book, and there is no spending limit. Return the gifts, and place them under the Angel Tree by Dec. 9th. Please contact Jane Brown ( ) or Margie Liggins ( ) if you have any questions. and a very Merry Christmas also! ZACH TREE CHRISTMAS PARTY Zach Tree will meet on December 13 th at 7:00pm in the Fellowship Hall. This will be our Christmas Party. All are welcome! BAG LUNCH MISSION Thank you to the "ANGEL" who left a nice bag with 3 new, over-size throws in the Wesley Hall in October with a label that said Oak City Outreach Center. With cold weather now here the OCOC was delighted when we brought them on October 27. Today, November 13, it's been raining and cool. I'm grateful to be inside, protected from the elements. Do you ever wonder, as I do, "How do homeless and needy people manage in this weather?" If you are going through clothing, gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, old comforters or bedspreads and decide to discard anything, the Outreach Center will be happy to give these items to those who they know can use them. Thank you for supporting the Bag Lunch Mission. Janet Giannattasio scandia1963@gmail.com
3 From the Pastor WESTOVER UMC December 2018 Wonderful that s the word that captures me right now as I am busy preparing for this holy season. It s the most wonderful time of the year! It s a wonderful life! Truly it s wonderful to see so many festive decorations. The sounds, smells, and sights of preparing for Christmas almost always leave me happily in anticipation. Almost always. Sometimes it s easy to bring a sense of dread to the season - anticipation of spending money I could better use in other ways, all the time it takes to cook, shop, decorate, plan, etc. Sometimes the holidays remind me of who is not here - whether that s a loved one in heaven or perhaps even an estrangement. So, I m glad there is another way to think about WONDERFUL - as in full of wonder. It s everywhere in the Nativity story, which is our Advent theme and focus this season. Mary is full of wonder at the angel Gabriel s greeting. So is Joseph. So are the shepherds. So, I imagine, are the wise men. So am I when I think about God becoming human - not a superhuman, not a strong political leader, not a royal king, not even a wealthy businessman with the resources to purchase anything the heart desires. God comes to us as a baby - small, helpless, dependent - born to a couple with little but their trust that God is involved in their lives and that they have been entrusted with a great mystery. (What if all parents brought their children into the world with that great hope!) God s first visitors are shepherds, people of low standing in their community. When the wise men come from a far country, they can only kneel and leave their gifts. God comes to us as one of us - needing the love and help of others. It s a truth that is too wonderful to imagine. God - here, in our midst, living an ordinary life in a small village, trusting his life to two very ordinary people. We are a living Nativity, you and I - we also come with wonder to the manger, we too live ordinary lives that we share with others we trust. We come to worship, to adore, to gaze, and to wonder what God can do in our lives. It s a wonder-filled life. peace, Pastor Claire t Order your Poinsettias to beautify the church at Christmas!
