Emmanuel News T.E.A.M - Together Everyone Achieves More Thursday 2 nd April 2015 Dear Parents/Carers, Thank you for all your positive comments during Parents Evening regarding the progress your child is making at Emmanuel and the feedback we received regarding the new booking system. Next term is very busy so please make sure you read the newsletter weekly and keep up to date with dates and events. We received a lovely letter from the Wellspring Church and Jewels School this week thanking you for your vital support in helping them get back on their feet after the recent Ebola crisis. Please do take the time to read this heart-warming letter of thanks which highlights the difficulties they have faced, what your fundraising money has been spent on and what their future plans are. We all thank you for your continued generosity. The Emmanuel TEAM wish you a very happy Easter and we look forward to welcoming you back for the start of the Summer Term on Monday 20 th April. Kind regards, Miss Fitzsimmons Attendance and Punctuality-Week Ending 27 th March 2015 As you know our attendance target for is 96%.Please see the table below for the figures for each class for the week ending 27 th March. CLASS YEAR GROUP NUMBER OF LATES ATTENDANCE Diamond Nursery 1 94 Ruby Reception 1 92 Garnet Year Emerald Year Topaz Year Amber Year Sapphire Year Quartz Year 5/ Autism Awareness Week This week is Autism Awareness Week and at Emmanuel we have been learning more about Autism. On Wednesday, Miss Guglielmoni and Miss Bond led an assembly which got us thinking about talented people, such as Stephen Wiltshire, Satoshi Tajiri and Mozart. We thought about our own talents and the talents of those around us. We remembered that people with Autism also have many talents, which they can share with us. Quartz class researched Autism and got the opportunity to ask lots of questions to one of our parents who has first-hand experience of Autism. Here are some of the questions they asked: If there was one thing you could change about autism, what would it be? Why do people with autism find strong light difficult? What particular situations people with autism find difficult and how can we help? They found it incredibly interesting and learnt lots! Today, Sapphire class are wearing blue to remember autism and have made delicious cakes to sell at the cake sale. Would you like to find out more about Autism? Have a look at this video clip below: Page 1 of 7
Music Concert On Monday Quartz Brass Band, our Recorder Ensemble and our School Band performed a music concert for their parents and the rest of the school. They performed with such confidence and everyone commented on the progress they had made. Our thanks go to Mrs Waller-Box, Miss Granger and all our peripatetic teachers for their fantastic work. We are so proud that children leaving Emmanuel in Year 6 leave being able to play at least one musical instrument! Music Techchnology at Emmanuel As you know Sapphire and Amber enjoyed visiting the City Learning Centre to learn how to use the computer programme Logic Pro to compose. They learnt how to loop and sequence music and made choices about instrumentation and texture in their compositions. Have a listen to their compositions on the Camden Music Service website - Year 5 Maths Masterclass at Brookfield Primary For the last four weeks a group of our Year 5 pupils have been attending Maths Master Classes on a Monday afternoon at Brookfield Primary School. Each week the children worked with pupils from other Camden schools to solve different Maths challenges from Code Breaking and Magic Squares to Maths Origami. I didn t realise that there were so many World Records for solving Rubix cube. Did you know the World Record for solving the Rubix Cube underwater is 4 mins 10 seconds! I really enjoyed the different types of maths we learnt and I also liked that we got to take the problems home! It was really fun and sometimes hard! My favourite session was the origami because we made lots of combinations of shapes. I enjoyed the Magic Squares because I found out about the secretive mathematical ways they worked! Page 2 of 7
Garnet Class Rainforest Workshop On Monday, the Tropical Rainforest visited Garnet Class! They met lots of exotic animals that live in the rainforest such as Lizards, Frogs, Spiders and they even got to hold a Boa Constrictor. The children had a great time getting up close and personal with these amazing animals and they all learnt some new and exciting things about the Rainforest. Quartz Class Art Workshop On Tuesday, Quartz Class had the privilege to work with an incredible artist called Neil Wood. They made press-mould casts of their memories of Emmanuel including our whole-school trips to Broadstairs and London Zoo as well as the recent football tournament. They first used a variety of tools to mark their image in clay before building a clay wall around the outside. Into this they poured plaster, which when it was set made their beautiful tiles. Here is what some of the children in Quartz said about their day: "I loved the different textures." Sofia "It was awesome!" Billy "Well, it was really fun!" Peter This was kindly paid for from the money you fundraise through our fantastic PFE. Next term each class will experience a fun art workshop funded by the PFE. We will hold a special Art Exhibition for parents/carers to come into school to view all the art work that the children have created. Look out for more details next term! Page 3 of 7
Reception Admissions As you know, a place in our Nursery (Diamond) Class does not mean you automatically get a place in Reception. Reception places are ranked in strict accordance to the Admissions Policy. Letters are due to be sent out by Camden Admissions Team on 16 th April (during the holiday). Parents have till the 30 th April to accept or decline their offer. Quadkids- Sprint, Run, Throw and Jump into Athletics! Quadkids is the England Athletics endorsed athletics format for children of all abilities. It is held at Parliament Hill on Sunday s (12/4, 10/5, 14/6, 12/7). Please see flyer at the end of the newsletter for more information. PFE We would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and we hope the children enjoy their Easter eggs! Thank you to Sainsbury's Finchley Road for contributing towards the eggs. Quiz Night will be held on Thursday 30 th April. Doors open at 6.45pm for a 7.30pm start. See poster at the end of this newsletter for more information. International Evening will be held on Wednesday 17 th June 6pm-8pm. From Fr Jonathan - Chair of Governors Thank you so much for all that each and every one of you has done for the life of the school during the term. The effectiveness of the school depends so much on the partnership between parents and carers and the school and we are most grateful to you all for making Emmanuel the special and inclusive community that it is. It was lovely to see so many of you at our Mothering Sunday Eucharist a few weeks ago as we celebrated all those who nurture and care for children. I hope that you will all have a good and restful Easter holiday and quality time with those you love. You would all be most welcome at any of our Holy Week and Easter services at Emmanuel Church which are as follows: MAUNDY THURSDAY (April 2nd 2015) Sung Eucharist of the Lord's Supper at 8 pm Jesus goes with his disciples to the upper room where feet are washed as a prefiguring of his greatest act of love and service on the Cross of Good Friday. As host of the supper Jesus assumes the role usually reserved for the most menial servant of the household, ennobling us by his profound humility. At the supper he shares bread and wine and commands us to do the same in remembrance of him every time we celebrate the Eucharist. From the table we go to the beautiful altar of repose, symbolizing the Garden of Gethsemane where he waits with his disciples as the hour of his passion grows closer. At the end of the liturgy the altar and sanctuary are dramatically stripped of their usual décor, symbolizing the desolation of his passion. Join us for this beautiful and moving service which lasts about an hour, followed by silent watch at the altar of repose for as long as you are able. GOOD FRIDAY (April 3rd 2015) This is the day of the Passion but, most importantly of all, the day on which we see God s love for us at its most passionate and in its greatest depth. Today Jesus opens wide his arms on the Cross and draws the whole world in all its wonderful and amazing diversity to himself. We are warmly invited to share his love and passion on this great day. At Emmanuel we have two services for this central day of the Church year. Children's Stations of the Cross at am A 30 minute service, especially for children, as we journey with Jesus on his last walk. Followed by hot cross buns. Page 4 of 7
Traditional Liturgy of the Lord's Passion and Death at 2 pm This is our traditional, quiet and meditative service of the day, with the reading of the Passion according to St John, Veneration of the Cross and our reception of holy communion bought to the high altar from the altar of repose. HOLY SATURDAY (April 4th 2015) This is the day when we wait with Jesus in the cool of his stone tomb. It is a day of preparation, as we prepare the Church for the great festival of his resurrection. All help will be very gratefully received from am onwards as we clean the Church ready to greet the risen Lord On the evening of Holy Saturday The Easter Vigil at 8 pm We gather in the darkness outside the Church. The new fire is lit as a sign of Jesus resurrection from the dead. From this new fire the Paschal (Easter) Candle is lit and brought into Church and Jesus risen glory proclaimed in the Exultet. After a brief sequence of readings we celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter, before going back outside for fireworks and Easter refreshments. The service lasts about an hour and is a dramatic and beautiful sequence from darkness to light. EASTER DAY (April 5th 2015) We bask in the risen glory of Jesus and share in the joyful message, which Mary Magdalene brought to his friends and disciples. Nothing will ever be the same again. Through the resurrection of Jesus earth and heaven are wedded together and his decisive victory over sin and death on the Cross is confirmed. At Emmanuel there are just two celebrations of the Eucharist on Easter Day: Eucharist of the dawn at 8 am Festival Community Eucharist at am concluding with children's Easter craft activities and Easter eggs generously sponsored by Chelsea Square. Please note that there is NO 9.15am Informal Eucharist on Easter day CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY Diamond Ruby Garnet Emerald Topaz Amber Sapphire Quartz 02/04/15 Name Ada Akram Charlie Rodrigue Luccia Nkadi Hugh Morris Ethan Johnson Nina Maksimovic Bailey Gauntlett Mia McTavish Charlie Dickens Eva Shepherd Aidan Cole Gabby Sounthonevichit Jaffar Al-Ajeeli Jamie Smith Kyle Lathpandura Angel Gallagher-Dasso Reason For excellent progress in her maths and phonics learning.
