We exist to be a community of welcome and worship where people find peace, purpose, and power through Jesus Christ. There s a good reason for all the fall cleaning you have been noticing going on around First Church. Our congregation will be hosting the Middle Pennsylvania District Conference on October 12 th and 13 th. Delegates and representatives of all 50+ churches in the District will be coming together at our house for worship, fellowship, district/denomination reports, business discussions and voting and elections of leaders for the coming year. Donita Kesiter, Annual Conference Moderator for 2019 will be preaching the message at Friday night s worship, with District Minister David Banaszak and District Moderator Janet Sell providing leadership for the rest of the agenda. It hardly seems adequate, but a special THANK YOU to all those who have given hours of service in preparation for the event. Any attempted listing of names would end up missing someone, but rooms have been painted, clutter removed, cleaning done, floors waxed and a million other little details addressed to help us put our best foot forward. And MORE individuals will be giving of their time during the actual event to help park the visitors, direct them to the proper places, feed the delegates and just generally provide a welcoming atmosphere to our guests. This has been just another example of why I feel blessed to be part of a congregation that takes seriously its opportunities to serve! Pastor Dave

2 Highlights of Leadership Mtg. Held on Aug 28th, 2018 Finance and Facility Team - Bryce Nooyen - Brick work to begin Aug 29th. - Going with a different insurance carrier. Same coverage at lower cost. - Will be doing some concrete repair and fixing drainage problem at parking lot entrance. Missions and Service Team - Darlene Wyland - Sent $2000 to District paying toward our budgeted commitment. - Finalizing preparations for Heritage Fair. - Explained again idea to provide opportunity for Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes again this year but also begin to promote a local and/or denominational project instead in the future. Worship Team - Terry Hershberger - Choir begins Aug 29th. Hoping for some new people to join. -Purchased 2 more new hand held microphones. Hospitality and Communications Team - Valerie Smith - Fifth Sunday meal September 30th. - Looking at having mentoring teams bring in the Light of Christ during worship some Sundays. Still need others to help. Adults are encouraged. Christian Education Team - Pat Frazier - Rally Day Sept. 9 will kick off Sunday School and highlight National Youth Conference and Camp Blue Diamond. Men s Fellowship will grill burgers and hotdogs for lunch. - Pleased to have some new Sunday School teachers as well as returning teachers. - A bookcase was placed in children s hallway with children s library books. - Planning a mural on wall of children s Sunday School hallway. Deacons' Report - Betsy Garach reported. - Continue to meet together regularly for prayer. - A donation of gift cards to Walmart was given to the Deacons who gave them to some families to help with back to school items. - Continue to make visits to shut ins. - People are reminded to be sure to let Deacons and Pastor Dave know if someone could use a visit. Pastor Dave - Young Adult on-line community is growing with 31 members currently. - Still feeling good about First Church and asks for prayers as he continues his ministry. - Currently taking 2 TRIM courses and plans on another in the fall and another in the spring Other - Received a letter from Marissa Witkovsky asking if church might assist her financially as she begins a year in Brethren Volunteer Service as one of the Denominational Workcamp coordinators. Agreed to pay her $250 entry fee. Next Meeting - September 25th at 6:30

6 District Conference District Conference will be held on October 12-13, 2018 at Roaring Spring First Church of the Brethren. Janet Sell is moderator and has chosen scripture from Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Friday night: Donita Keister, 2019 Annual Conference Moderator, will be in Middle PA to bring the Friday evening message, followed by a time of fellowship. Everyone is welcome! You don t need to be a delegate or non-delegate to attend. Saturday will begin with devotions and business items and reports will be shared by those important ministries. We encourage you to register as a delegate with your congregation or individuals can register as non-delegates. Offerings will be for Pennies for Witness and for the Puerto Rio District. Note from Moderator: Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. KJV Jesus came into the world to be the light...to shine in the darkness and for us to become closer and closer to Him. Here in Middle PA, we have a path...a journey that requires that we follow the light. In preparation for the 2018 District Conference, ask yourself the question: Where have you seen the light of Christ shining in your congregation or in your personal life? Our world today desperately needs to see the light. We live in a world of darkness. A world where many do not know where to turn for help. We as Christians know the answer but many do not. What is our responsibility for those who do not? Are we in Middle PA District doing what God calls us to do? To trust God in the Light is nothing but trust him in the dark that is faith. (C.H. Spurgeon) It is also our hope to have a representative from the Compelling Vision Process to share information that is so critical for our denomination. 7 Minister to your minister In honor of Clergy Appreciation Month, use these alphabetical reminders of how to treat pastors: Accept them as people. Build them up. Say thank you. Communicate with them. Defend them when someone tries to run them down. Entertain them. They like to have fun, too! Family. Allow them to have a family life. Genuine. Be honest with them. Be yourself around them. Honor them. Don t put them on a pedestal, but respect them. Income. Pay them enough so money isn t a concern. Judge not! Avoid being critical. Kind. Treat pastors as you want to be treated. Love. See 1 Corinthians 13. Maintain. Their families have the same needs as other families. Nurture. Help them grow in grace. Offer to help. The list of things you can do is endless. Pray for them. Lift up their names to God daily. Quelch not. Encourage instead! Rejoice in and with them. Surprise them in little and big ways. Trust them. Believe in them. Understand them. Put yourself in their place. Vacation. They need time away. Welcome them into your home. Don t wait for an invitation. expend yourself, not them. Yoke. Help them bear their burdens with grace and dignity. Zap all gossip! We will join together in the Overflow Room as we continue to bring comfort and support to one another in our journeys of finding a new sense of peace and purpose.
