2 SEPTEMBER 2015/5775 / 5776 One of my favorite musical liturgical highlights for the High Holy Days is Avinu Malkeinu. It is part of our musical liturgy during the Rosh Hashanah Evening Service and then additional times before the closing blast of the shofar at the end of the Yom Kippur N ilah service. It would hardly be Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur without the recitation and the melodies we sing for Avinu Malkeinu. Though a lengthy petition today, the prayer began as only one line, the last line of the prayer as it is in the machzor, Our Father, our King, be gracious and answer us, for we have little merit. Treat us generously and with kindness, and be our help. The author of this prayer of petition is said to have been Rabbi Akiba (ca. 40 C.E C.E.), who composed his words on the occasion of a drought in Judea, the land of Israel. It is told that his supplication for divine mercy, even in the face of humanity s lack of goodness, brought rain. Through the centuries, that one line attracted others, until a lengthy litany had built up. Since it was easy for different verses to be attached to the poem, more than one final version found its way into the printed texts. The editors of the Reform machzor wanted what they felt was the finest selection from among the traditional verses. They added one or two verses, and decided to restore the original order, so that the Reform Movement s machzor might be harmonious with those used by the rest of the Jewish world. But the people s fondness for Avinu Malkeinu actually had nothing to do with the text. It was rooted in the music specifically the composition by the 20 th century composer, Max Janowski. His setting for Avinu Malkeinu became a Reform tradition across the United States and Canada. Janowski s musical rendition of the prayer was what finally dictated the priority of the placement of the verses of the prayer in Gates of Repentance and also in our new machzor, Mishkan Hanefesh. Avinu Malkeinu a simple folk prayer that grew through the ages. We repeat Avinu ( Our Father ) and Malkeinu ( Our King ). These two divine descriptions uttered from early times onward, represent two opposite, yet complimentary attributes of our Creator the loving, merciful parent, and at the same time, the just ruler. Midrash (the whole compilation of homiletic teachings on the Bible) says that the world is balanced between absolute compassion and rigorous application of justice. We reach out to Avinu (Our Parent) and Malkeinu (Our Sovereign) as we sing and pray during the beautiful and meaningful Days of Awe. L Shanah Tovah Tikateivu, Cantor Riselle Bain
