JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York (845) office@sjegoshen.org Though the liturgical celebrations of the Easter Triduum are two weeks behind us, we owe a debt of gratitude to all of those who worked to make them a worthy celebration: altar servers, lectors, special ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, decorators, and cleaners. I am especially grateful to our sacristans/masters of ceremony, Kevin Bowen, Alex Kerstanski, and J.P. Swift, for their efforts. Special thanks to Mary Ellen Hubbard, Carol Silvernail, the choir, and our guest instrumentalists, for helping to raise our hearts and voices in prayer; their preparations begin long before Holy Week Here are some updates regarding projects around the property: The replacement of the roof on the original part of the school is still on track for this summer. I expect that, by the time you read this, the request for proposals will be ready for delivery to qualified roofing contractors. We have signed a contract to replace most of the boilers in the school this summer as well. Several of the units there now failed over the past few months, and are beyond repair. We are working on the repairs to the front steps of the rectory, as well as the box drain outside the entrance to McCaffrey Hall. We are working with an engineering firm to assess the outside of the church, specifically its integrity against water infiltration. If you look around the inside of the building, you ll no doubt notice areas of water damage. In some cases, it s not clear whether these are current leaks or not. At the same time, we have mapped out a plan for interior renovations. As of now, next summer (2018) will be devoted to construction of a new lavatory and confessional in the back of the church. Our architect is confident that we will be able to continue using the church during construction. The following summer (2019) will be given over to the restoration of the pews, restoration (and replacement where needed) of the floor, improvement of the lighting, and painting; this will necessitate us vacating the building for a period of time. Any modifications to the sanctuary would take place in Stay tuned I recently came across this passage, which is taken from a much larger document called the Jerusalem Catecheses. This is a series of instructions given by St. Cyril of Jerusalem ( ) to the newly-initiated. This is something amazing and unheard of! It was not we who actually died, were buried and rose again. We only did these things symbolically, but we have been saved in actual fact. It is Christ who was crucified, who was buried and who rose again, and all this has been attributed to us. We share in his sufferings symbolically and gain salvation in reality. What boundless love for men! Christ s undefiled hands were pierced by the nails; he suffered the pain. Confessions will be heard Thursday, May 4th from 4:00-4:30 p.m. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin after the 6:30 a.m. Mass and continue until Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m. (please note: there is no 8:00am Mass on Saturday, May 7). There is a sign up sheet where you can list the time you wish to spend with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. St. John s Rosary Makers are seeking donations of wire rosary beads. They need not be new, if broken we will fix them. They will be given to the inmates at the Orange County Jail. Please consider giving your older rosaries a new life in evangelization. They may be left in the green plastic container on the self in the vestibule of the church. Any parishioner age 18 or over may submit his/her name to be considered; all of the names will be put into a bowl, we ll ask the Holy Spirit for guidance, and then names will be selected at Mass on Pentecost Sunday, June 4.
