6 THRIVE Using the acronym THRIVE, we have identified six core values to being good neighbors: Trust, Health, Relationships, Imagination, Value, and Education. Trust is essential to faith in God, and it builds community. Trust enables people to be authentic. In a culture where shame and judgment seem pervasive, empowering people to experience trust through honesty, vulnerability, and compassion is transformative. We define Health as a sense of wholeness through spiritual, emotional, and physical health. The broader culture fragments people s lives by work, family, social circles, civic involvement, etc. However, our lives are whole when we find a healthy balance of spirit, mind, and body. Just as healing was a main element of Jesus ministry, working for health is essential to our ministry. Relationships are foundational to faith. In the Trinity, our very understanding of God is as a relationship between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Therefore, life-giving relationships empower people to be good neighbors and build community. We believe relationship building in any form is essential to understanding and relating to God, who exists as a relationship. God is a great mystery. To understand and relate to God more deeply, one must be empowered with Imagination and creativity. While we acknowledge the value of empirical knowledge and understanding, providing space for people to be creative, experience the arts, and play allows for a richer sense of the Divine Mystery. So often our culture measures personal value by externals such as money, position, ethnicity, sexuality, and social status. However, we believe that our true Value is defined by the fact that we are all children of God. This may be the most empowering and transformative claim we can make. Good education is more than dissemination of facts and knowledge. True education empowers people through deeper understanding and seeking wisdom. Therefore, Education is essential for being good neighbors and Kingdom-building as we empower people to seek wisdom.

7 THE ROADMAP As God has given First Church this vision of being good neighbors to make Little Rock a place where children thrive, we need a map to guide our path toward this vision. The following is our Roadmap to fulfilling God s vision for our church. The map includes two equally important sides of the road - internal and external. Being good neighbors Jesus said to him: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Matthew 22: AGE LEVEL MINISTRY MILESTONE Creating opportunities for children to THRIVE not only means service and advocacy for children beyond our church, it also requires creating vital and transformative ministries for children and youth already connected to our church. By September 2017, the Age Level Ministry Task Force will develop a vision and ministry plan specifically for youth and children s ministries. 2. SMALL GROUP MILESTONE Whereas small groups are the primary and most effective way to create and nurture spiritual relationships that develop trust, personal value, and spiritual health, we will establish a vibrant Small Group Ministry. Therefore, by 2019, we have 70% of the congregation engaged in a small group of some form. 3. ADULT EDUCATION MILESTONE A thriving church is filled with good neighbors who have healthy spiritual lives and disciplines of prayer and study. Therefore, by December 2019, we will have established our church s identity as a biblically literate and spiritually healthy congregation, distinctively Wesleyan in theology and practice. 4. INTENTIONAL COMMUNAL CELEBRATIONS MILESTONE A thriving community is built through intentional communal celebrations to nurture trust, health, relationships, imagination, value, and education. Beginning Sept. 2017, we will establish more frequent communal celebrations. to make Little Rock a place where children THRIVE. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs. Matthew 19:14 1. MENTORING MILESTONE Through multiple means, the people of First United Methodist Church will engage in direct mentoring relationships with children and youth in Little Rock. By December 2019, 300 children per year will be engaged in mentoring relationships through direct interaction with at least 150 people of First Church. 2. HUNGER MILESTONE Through expansion of existing hunger programs sponsored by the church (e.g. FANN) and establishment of new programs and partnership, by December 2019, the church will have a direct and measurable impact on childhood hunger within our mission field. 3. CREATIVITY + IMAGINATION MILESTONE Building on our successful First Arts ministry, by December 2019 we will expand this program to provide instruction in the arts (music, drama, creative writing, and visual arts) for 200 children per year. 4. PUBLIC WITNESS WITH EMPHASIS ON EDUCATION MILESTONE Making Little Rock a place where children THRIVE requires more than direct engagement with children. It also requires changing the structures and policies that impede children s development. Therefore, by December 2019, we will embed First Church at the forefront of public advocacy in Little Rock to influence the welfare of our children.

9 NEWS & EVENTS OMP brings church youth groups to camp sites around Arkansas where they, in turn, engage in the surrounding communities. In the spirit of Christ, these youth and adults serve individuals and families, our neighbors, who are in need of minor construction and yard work. In addition to the physical service projects, we strive to meet social and emotional needs by spending part of our time visiting, sharing lunch and, if the neighbor so chooses, a devotional. The camp makes no demand of race, age, income or religion in the selection of our neighbors. FUMCLR is hosting an OMP camp this summer from June 25-July 1. We need shower houses for Monday-Friday of that week (26-30). Volunteering to be a shower house means you open your home to a family group (4-5 youth campers + an adult) and let them use your shower between 3:30 and 5:00 in the afternoon. Please Christi charper@fumclr.org if you would like to volunteer as a shower house for OMP this summer. We also need groups to volunteer for kitchen duty for the meals in the evening. This is a wonderful way to show hospitality to this group of young people. For more details, Carol Roddy (croddy10113@sbcglobal.net). Both opportunities above are tangible ways that we can live our new vision of Being Good Neighbors. Thank you so much in advance for welcoming this inspiring group in our church family this summer! Way to go Michelle! Long-time FUMC member Michelle Whitfield will be ordained at Annual Conference in Hot Springs on Tuesday, June 20th at 7:30 pm at the Bank of the Ozarks Arena. First Church has been Michelle s supporting community of faith on her journey toward ordination, so this is a very special time for her and us! Michelle has been appointed to First Church for the last 2 years to work in the area of children s ministry. She also leads a support group, Taking Care: Supporting Parents and Grandparents, of children who have developmental or emotional challenges. Please join us as we celebrate this significant moment in Michelle s life. If you would like to make a donation towards the purchase of a special gift - please contact Rev. Donna Hankins-Hull (dhankins@fumclr.org). Sound Volunteers Needed! One of the most vital parts of worship is something you might not think about, until it s not there - SOUND. We are in need of more sound booth volunteers for the 11 am worship service. You do not have to be an expert, just willing to be trained and serve a Sunday in the rotation. Our goal is to get a list of 6-8 volunteers, so that you would only serve once every 6-8 weeks! If you are interested, contact Kyle Linson (klinson@fumclr.org.) Donna Hankins-Hull, Associate Pastor Cell: Week Grief Series, June 15 at 6:00 p.m. Life After Loss is a 5 week series that deals with the realities of grief following death. The grief of losing a loved one touches numerous areas of our lives, physically, emotionally and spiritually. There are common experiences that most grieving people share, yet grief is a very personal experience. In the midst of a grief experience are a couple of important questions How? How can I move gracefully through the ache of loss? How do I cope when life presses painfully against my happiness? Who? Who will be with me in this process? because I know that I cannot go through this alone. In response to these questions, First Church is offering a five-week Grief Support Group Series beginning June 15 July 13. The group will meet on Thursday evenings from 6:00 8:00 pm at the church. During this series, we will explore life after loss focusing on the realities of grief following the death of a loved one. During this series, group participants will share together the pain of loss as well as gain strength from the loving support of others who are grieving.
