2 Website: stpaulsmidland.org St. Paul s United Church Eighth Sunday after Penticost SUNDAY July 22nd, 2012 *When you see this sign, please stand as you are able. WE GATHER IN GOD S NAME PRELUDE MUSIC WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *HYMN # 232 Joyful Joyful We Adore You CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive) As Disciples of Christwe are learners, together, As disciples of Christwe are people on The Way. As disciples of Christwe care for one another. As disciples of Christwe serve, we share, we pray. In this time together, may God's presence transform us. In this time together, may God's presence transform the world! LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE As we light this Christ candle, may it remind us that Christ is in us and in Our world. INTROIT: Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place, I can feel God s mighty power and God s Grace. I can feel the brush of angels wings I see glory on each face, Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place. OPENING PRAYER (in unison) Almighty and merciful God, from whom comes all that is good, we praise you for all your mercies, given us in Jesus, our Christ: your goodness that has created us, your grace that has sustained us, your wisdom that has challenged us,
3 your patience that has borne with us, and your love that has redeemed us. Amen. *HYMN #340 Jesus, Friend of Little Children THEME CONVERSATION WITH THE CHILDREN (Cathy Metzgar) PRAYERS WITH CHILDREN THE LORD S PRAYER PRAYER OF CONFESSION (responsive) In our journey through life we often become discouraged by the challenges and obstacles that we face along the way and the path our lives have taken that may not be exactly what we envisioned. God, we know you love us and we ask your forgiveness when we try to face those challenges and summit the obstacles before us by ourselves. Forgive us for being our own harshest critics and open our hearts to your strength and love. WORDS ASSURANCE WE HEAR THE WISDOM OF THE WORD PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION (in unison) Follow me, Jesus said, and then proceeded to teach and preach and heal. That's not an easy path for us to follow, O God, but inspired by your word, encouraged by your Spirit, and supported by one another, we dare to try. May your word inspire us today to follow your way. Amen. SCRIPTURE READINGS: PSALM SERMON THE JOURNEY WE RESPOND TO GOD S WORD GIVING OF OUR GIFTS HYMN # 595 We Are Pilgrims *DOXOLOGY: #VU 541 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures high and low; give thanks to God in love made known: Creator, Word and Spirit, One. OFFERTORY PRAYER (in unison) God we know that sometimes children ask about the "money part" of the church service. If God is so powerful and kind, why don't we have lots of money? Easy answer: because God as always works through us and our generosity is paid forward tenfold plus through our minister Karen and our congregation, as our generosity shines the Christian light throughout our community and through our lives. Amen. * HYMN VU# 679 Let There Be light COMMISSIONING/BENEDICTION * SUNG BLESSING Go in love; have no fear. God will guide you, He is always near. Go in Love; take His hand. God will hear you, He will understand. May His light forever shine upon you. WE GO FORTH TO SERVE
4 POSTLUDE May His peace be always in your heart. Go in love; face each day. God will lead you, He will show the way. Go in love and live in faith. Amen. (Reproduced with permission under license #c607447) NEWS AND UPCOMING EVENTS A special welcome to all new friends as we gather to celebrate God s presence in our lives. MINUTE FOR MISSION July 22 Food for Life More and more, the rights of small-scale farmers and farm dwellers are being violated and undermined in South Africa. Your Mission and Service gift supports an organization that works for justice and equal rights in rural South Africa. People should be able to produce or get healthy food and help determine agricultural policies. Yet that is not the case in South Africa. The export-driven model of agriculture there encourages using agro-chemicals, genetically modified plants, and fuels that negatively affect health and the environment. Farm dwellers face evictions or dispossession, violence, human rights abuses, and rural displacement. They are among the poorest and most vulnerable sectors of society and face myriad challenges. Mission and Service supports the Surplus People Project (SPP), which works with the rural poor to fight poverty and improve livelihoods. A key to this goal is access to and control of land, water, and seed, as well as access to local markets. SPP also works with farmers to promote ecological agriculture to minimize farming s effect on the environment and to maximize the use of available and renewable resources. Your gift to Mission and Service supports planning, research, and lobbying; raises awareness through education; and helps South African men and women in rural areas to improve their quality of life. Have you made a Mission and Service gift lately? Mission & Service Fund: We are presently under budget $ on our Mission and Service givings. We have budgeted till the end of July: $17, We have raised as of July 15 th $14, Please give to the Mission and Service Fund!

7 I can be a nightmare of the grandest kind I can withhold like it's going out of style I have the bravest heart that you've ever seen, and you've never met anyone (who's) As positive as I am sometimes Chorus: You see everything You see every part You see all my light And you love my dark You dig everything Of which I'm ashamed There's not anything To which you can't relate. And your still here. I blame everyone else, not my own partaking My passive aggressiveness can be devastating I'm the most gorgeous woman that you've ever know, and you've never met anyone (who's) As everything as I am sometimes Chorus: What I resist, persists and speaks louder than I know What I resist-your love, no matter how low or high I go Chorus: And you're still here.
