The Calendar St. Hilda ( ), Abbess We commemorate St Hilda, Abbess of Whitby, on November 18 th. Hilda was born into the royal family of Northumbria, and probably spent the first half of her life in and around court. We know she was baptized at York when she was 13. Twenty years later she professed her vows as a nun, and set off to join her sister at a convent in France. Apparently St Aidan had other ideas, and called her back, placing her in charge of religious communities first at Wearmouth and then Hartlepool, both small settlements on the northeast coast of England. In 657 she was asked to found a monastery for both men and women at Whitby, where she was Abbess for the next 23 years, and which, under her guidance, became the most well-known religious house in England. The Synod of Whitby (664) that decided whether the church would follow Roman or Celtic customs in calculating the date of Easter, was held under her roof. Hilda was on the Celtic side at first, but once the Romans won the arguments, she accepted them. She was strict in keeping monastic ideals in practice in her monastery, so all goods were held in common, and everyone had to study the Bible and do good works. We know more about her than many of her contemporaries because the Venerable Bede wrote extensively about her in 731, while the memory of her character and good works was still fresh. He emphasized her devotion and ability to encourage others to use their talents, including the shepherd Caedmon, England s first recorded poet. She was sought by many for advice, even kings and princes, all of whom called her Mother because of her wonderful devotion and grace. She died on November 17 th, 680, after six years of illness, and there is at least one report of a nun seeing her soul being carried to heaven by angels. Submitted by Chris Burn 4 9

5 The Gospel The Holy Gospel is written in the eleventh chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Mark beginning at the 38th verse. (BCP) Glory be to thee, O Lord. (BCP) The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. (BAS) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (BAS) As he taught, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets! They devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. (Mark 11:38-44) The Gospel of Christ. (BAS) A Reading from the First Book of Samuel On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?" After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: "O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head." As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, "How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine." But Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time." Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him." And she said, "Let your servant find favour in your sight." Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshipped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. Refrain A Reading from the Letter to the Hebrews And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
