1 Welcome THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT Sunday 4 March 2018 LECTIO DIVINA takes place today at 8.45am in the Library. An informal opportunity to reflect on scripture together in a contemplative way. SUNDAY SCHOOL takes place in the Library for those There is a DIY crèche in the Exhibition Room (next to the Library) for under 3s. HYMN BOOKS For services in the Nave, hymn books and Books of Common Prayer can be found behind the kneeler on the seat in front of you. COFFEE AND FELLOWSHIP Coffee and tea and other refreshments available in the Education Centre after the Eucharist. MUSIC TODAY The music was correct at the time of printing. OLD TESTAMENT READING Exodus read by Janet Lawson Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name. Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work - you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your livestock, or the alien resident in your towns. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the

PSALM The law of the Lord is an undefiled law, converting the soul : the testimony of the Lord is sure, and giveth wisdom unto the simple. 8 The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart : the commandment of the Lord is pure, and giveth light unto the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever : the judgements of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold : sweeter also than honey, and the honey-comb. 11 Moreover, by them is thy servant taught : and in keeping of them there is great reward. 12 Who can tell how oft he offendeth : O cleanse thou me from my secret faults. 13 Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the dominion over me : so shall I be undefiled, and innocent from the great offence. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart : be alway acceptable in thy sight, NEW TESTAMENT READING 1 Corinthians read by Jacob Smart For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling-block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength.

4 HYMN 448 GOSPEL READING John The Holy Gospel is written in the second chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John, beginning at the thirteenth verse. The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father s house a market-place! His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for your house will consume me. The Jews then said to him, What sign can you show us for doing this? Jesus answered them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews then said, This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days? But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. This is the Gospel of the Lord. 8 Faith through Art in Lent - Thursday evenings during Lent There will be a series of short talks reflecting on Biblical stories and Lenten themes through the lens of paintings and drawings. The talks start at 8.00pm and will be followed by a service of sung Compline at 8.30pm. This Series continues on Thursday 8 March with a talk by Canon Julie entitled Cross which will draw on Edwina Sandys' sculpture Christa. The following evenings dates and themes are 15 March Canon Andrew - Sleep; 22 March Canon Julie - Two Deaths, One Life. All are welcome for a time of inspiration, conversation and contemplation in word, image and prayer. Family Activity Days volunteers needed As part of our Family outreach programme we have two new events scheduled over the next few months for which we need volunteers. On Wednesday 4 April from 10am to 12.30pm there will be an Easter Activity morning and on Wednesday 30 May from 10am to 12.30pm there will be a Pentecost Kite Making Workshop. You can volunteer to help at either or at both. If you are interested in volunteering as a helper at one of these events please contact Louise Kenyon, Acting Head of Schools and Family Learning, louise@guildford-cathedral.org Everyone is invited to put these dates in your diaries to bring your neighbours, children and/or grandchildren along to help them discover more about seasons of the Christian calendar in an informal setting. Linda Sharpin Come and enjoy a Tour The Cathedral is open every day for visitors and pilgrims. There are a variety of self-guided tours which focus on particular aspects of our wonderful building including a self-guided pilgrimage. For children there are new trails and Explorer Bags with everything they need to enjoy their visit. Our experienced and friendly Guides provide regular scheduled tours and tickets for these can be obtained from the Cathedral Shop on the day or booked on-line through the website. Details at Book Launch Invitation - Thursday15 March 6.30 pm Regular worshippers at the Cathedral may know that, through his work at the University, Canon Andrew has been reflecting with academics from various disciplines on the subject of sleep. This has led to his work on Christian theology and sleep which is published this month by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. If you want a taste of the sorts of areas the book covers you can go to Stainer s Crucifixion on Palm Sunday - Sunday 25 March 7.00pm We are delighted to be welcoming Barry Rose back to Guildford Cathedral as he celebrates his 60th anniversary of working with the BBC Singers. He will be conducting Stainer's Crucifixion in a live broadcast on BBC Radio. The Organist will be Malcolm Archer and the BBC Singers will be joined by some of our own fabulous choristers. This is a BBC production and not a service and the Cathedral has been made an allocation of tickets for the performance. Guildford Pilgrimage to Walsingham 2018 For our pilgrimage to Walsingham, we have to make firm bookings with the Hospitality Department at the Shrine by the weekend before Holy Week. He will then give you a Booking Form which you will be asked to complete and return with a cheque for 30 per person to cover the deposit required to secure the booking.
