3 LECTIONARY TEXTS FOR TODAY S CATHEDRAL EUCHARIST Communicant members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant and would like to receive a blessing, please inform the clergy by bringing this leaflet to the Altar Rail. COLLECT FOR THE DAY O Almighty God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow thy blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys which thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. NEW TESTAMENT READING Revelation 7: 9-17 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb! And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, singing, Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen. Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from? I said to him, Sir, you are the one that knows. Then he said to me, These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Before the gospel, the Alleluia is played over once on the organ, then sung once by the choir, then repeated by choir and congregation. The choir then sings a gospel verse, before the choir and congregation repeat the Alleluia once.
4 Gospel verse (choir only): You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s own people, called out of darkness into his marvellous light. After the gospel, the first phrase of the Alleluia is played over on the organ, and is then sung once by choir and congregation. GOSPEL READING Matthew 5: 1-12 The Holy Gospel is written in the 5 th chapter of the Gospel according to Matthew, beginning at the 1 st verse. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. This is the Gospel of the Lord. MOTET: O Quam gloriosum O quam gloriosum est regnum in quo cum Christo gaudent omnes sancti! Amicti stolis albis Agnum sequuntur quocunque ierit. O how glorious is the kingdom wherein all the saints rejoice with Christ! Clothed in white robes they follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. Music: Tomás Luis de Victoria ( )
5 EVENSONG ANTHEM TEXT Give us the wings of faith to rise within the veil, and see the saints above, how great their joys, how bright their glories be. We ask them whence their victory came: they, with one united breath, ascribe their conquest to the Lamb, their triumph to his death. They marked the footsteps that he trod, his zeal inspired their breast, and, following their incarnate God, they reached their promised rest. Text: Isaac Watts ( ) Music: Sir Ernest Bullock ( ) THE COMING WEEK During term time the Cathedral Choir sings Choral Evensong every day (except Wednesdays and Saturdays) and at the Cathedral Eucharist and Choral Mattins on Sundays. 7 The autumn series of Public Lectures on Thursday evenings at will be on the theme of Peaceable Kingdom. Alongside events and services which commemorate the outbreak of the First World War, this lecture series offers an opportunity to consider what makes for peace, and how our vision of the Kingdom is shaped. 6 November: Prof David Clough, Chester University, God's Deliverance of Animals: Future Belief and Present Challenge 20 November: Dr Simon Usherwood, University of Surrey, Politics & the Kingdom For full details please contact Canon Julie Gittoes. In due course, further information will be available on the Cathedral website and on Cathedral Appeal Event: Appeal Vice-President and Chairman of Surrey County Council, David Munro is organising a fundraising event on 6 November and invites you to an Exploration of Surrey wines held at the WWF Headquarters, Woking. Tickets are 25, including canapés and wines and can be booked by contacting or chairmans.office@surreycc.gov.uk. Cathedral Appeal Music Reception -Thursday 13 November: This event is being held to introduce the second phase of the Cathedral Appeal. To complete the appeal that we launched last year we need to raise a further 800,000. This includes the cost of renovating the Cathedral organ in order to set it up for a further extended period of service; it will be necessary to dismantle the instrument to enable the building work to go ahead and so this is the obvious time to undertake essential repairs and renovation (the organ has not had a comprehensive renovation since it was installed 53 years ago, and parts of it are much older). If funds permit, we also hope to enhance the organ s musical resources for accompanying our splendid choir by re-designing the section above the choirstalls. Guests are invited to Choral Evensong at 5.30pm followed by drinks and canapés in the Nave from 6.30pm. Those attending will hear more about the plans to safeguard our wonderful building and enhance its work for future generations. Canon Thistlethwaite will speak about the work on the organ and how it will sustain and develop the Cathedral s choral tradition and musical excellence. Katherine Dienes-Williams, will provide an inspiring demonstration of the organ. For catering purposes, the event is by invitation only, please contact Wendy Klongarom appeal@guildford-cathedral.org or if you would like to attend. Funeral of John Hunter: John Hunter, a well-known and much-loved Guide, Friend and member of the congregation died last week. We extend our sympathies to Mary and their family. John s funeral will take place in the Cathedral at 2.15 pm on Tuesday 18 November. All will be welcome.
8 Winter Market and Fair - Saturday 22 November The Cathedral Events Department would be grateful for donations of good quality evening wear and accessories for their stall. Please leave donations of evening wear in the Events Office. Thank you. The Friends are very grateful for everyone s past generosity for the tombola stall, last year raising 700. We really need your help with donations again this year please. Any unwanted gifts, or suitable prizes can be left in the Events Office. The money raised will support The Friends' pledge of 35,000 to the Guildford Cathedral Appeal. Thank you. Christmas by Candlelight at All Saints Odiham on Saturday 6 December at 7pm: This year, the men, boys and girls of Guildford Cathedral Choir will be giving a Christmas Concert by Candlelight in the delightful setting of All Saints Parish Church Odiham. The concert will be directed by Katherine Dienes-Williams and the organist will be Paul Provost. The Cathedral Shop will be open beforehand from 4.30pm - a special 15% discount will be available for all Christmas purchases. The Theological Book Group: will meet on Sunday, 7 December at to discuss Heresies and How to Avoid Them by Ben Quash (ed). It is very readable collection of sermons addressing questions such as Was Jesus divine? Can people save themselves by their own efforts? Even if you are unable to attend the discussion group it is an interesting book to engage with. It can be ordered from the Cathedral Shop; more information from Canon Julie Gittoes. Friends Christmas Soirée- Tuesday 9 December from 6.30pm in the Refectory. A seasonal evening of food and entertainment for everyone (you don t have to be a Friend to attend).
