1 The MESSENGER August 2017 Volume 5, Issue 8 Throughout the month of August we are going to be asking you and every MBC member to Say Yes to Serving! The New Testament helps paint this picture of how every single church member has a role to play in the Body of Christ. Jesus is the Head of the Body, and each one of us, being guided and empowered by the Head, are used by Him inside the church to build up, strengthen, and encourage others in the Body. And so, for Manchaca Baptist to function at its best, we need every one of us to Say Yes to Serving. Many people I talk to in the church really want to serve and be used in God s Kingdom work, but the dilemma for a lot of people is not believing that they have anything to offer. This flies in the face, however, of God s word which claims We are God s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2:10). Each one of us have something to offer when it comes to building up the church. Rick Warren at Saddleback Church developed the acronym SHAPE to help explain how God might reveal to us how we are specifically wired for a particular ministry. The S stands for spiritual gifts. We are each given a gift by the Spirit (1 Cor. 12, Rom. 8, Eph. 4) at the moment of conversion and that gift is to be used in our service within the church. Sometimes spiritual gift inventory tests can be used to help determine your gift, but often we see what gift(s) we ve been given as we simply volunteer and experiment with different kinds of ministries in the church. The H stands for heart. Another word for heart is passion. God gives each one of us passions, desires, and interests which play a role in how he has wired us for service within the church. The A stands for abilities. God has given each one of us natural talents, and when those talents are entrusted to the Spirit, God uses them as we serve within the church to glorify Him and strengthen the church. The P stands for personality. We each have a Godgiven personality in which He also uses as a part of our wiring to play a role in building up the church. Finally, the E stands for experiences. The Lord teaches us through life experiences which make us better equipped for certain ministries to serve in or to be able to relate to others who have had similar experiences in their life as well. As you prayerfully consider your spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences, and experiment with serving in various ministries within the church, I believe that God will give you direction on where He wants to use you to build up and be an encouragement to the church. At MBC we have all kinds of places for you to jump into serving and experience Christ in you and through you! Each Sunday, we will have a display in the main foyer which will show all of the specific ministry positions which need to be filled. Please stop by this display, check out all of the ministry positions, pray over how the Lord wants to use you throughout the school/ministry year, and Say Yes to Serving! 2 Senior Adult Ministry Hey Senior Adults! On August 15 we are going to San Antonio for a little shopping at the Mexican Market Place, enjoy an amazing lunch and then go for a tour at the SAS factory. The factory tour will include walking and riding. And their store is AMAZING with 10 cent cokes and 5 cent popcorn! Of course, there will be time for a quick stop at our favorite Bucees as well. We will depart at 9:30 AM from the church. All you need is a donation for the driver for gas and money for your shopping pleasure and a delicious lunch! Student Ministry HEY MBC FAMILY! Summer has flown by, but there is a lot of excitement for what the Lord is beginning to do in our student ministry already. I can t begin to tell you how excited I am for the, Say Yes campaign that we have just started. It brings me so much joy to see the body stepping in where needed to see the success of the church and to pour in to the next generation. I would love to meet and talk about how you can serve in student ministry this year if this is something the Lord is leading you to do. As a last reminder, there is a parent meeting going to take place in on August 27 th following 2 nd Children s Ministry Summer is flying by! In a few short weeks we kick off another school year, and I can t wait to see what God is going to do through us in MBC KIDS. In August our preschoolers will be learning all about our wonderful world, and our kindergarten through 5th graders will be learning that RESPECT is a response to the character of God. With promotion Sunday on August 13th, and then AWANA starting back up on September 6th, we have several ministry opportunities for God to use you to teach children of all ages about His heart. Say Yes! Will you please pray about how God wants you to serve this fall? Saying, yes to MBC Kids has been one of the biggest bless- Come and bring a friend or neighbor and let s make this a time to reach out as well. In Christ, John Berryhill Pastor to Senior Adults & Pastoral Care , x26 john@manchacabaptist.org service. Lunch will be provided and we will dive into the incoming school year and what to expect. This meeting is open to all incoming 6 th grade parents through 12 th grade parents. If you are a parent, please be sure to attend this meeting for it will contain important information for your student. I look forward to hearing and seeing how the Lord uses each and every one of you in His Kingdom work over the next year! Because of Grace, Tanner Shumake, Student Pastor ext. 22 tanner@manchacabaptist.org ings of my life. I would love to serve alongside you this year! 3 Worship Music Notes We re-watched the Hillsong: Let Hope Rise movie this weekend and one of the recurring themes stated by many of the individuals in the movie is, how can people do life without Jesus?. Many band members recall broken times where their spirit struggled to understand, and they were confident enough in their unity with Christ to know that He was the only way to find peace in those moments. It s His strength, not theirs. The psalmist says in Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever Psalm 23 says He leads me by still waters He restores my soul. We live in a world of broken- ness and people need hope. That hope has a name and it is Jesus Christ! Hopefully if you re hurting today, you turn to Christ. With love, Jake & Krista Neal Contemporary Worship , x17 jakeandkrista@manchacabaptist.org Outside the Walls Service Opportunities Do you have a heart for foster children? We are wanting to partner with Austin Angels to help support foster children and foster families through their Love Box program and are looking for someone who would help be the team leader for this ministry. 50% of foster families close their home within the first 2 years because of feelings of loneliness, lack of support, and being overwhelmed. Through the Love Box program, foster children receive a box each month that is filled with needed items, gifts, and personal notes which help provide support to children in foster care and their foster families. If you are interested in helping with this ministry or would like more information please contact Pastor Jason at jason@manchacabaptist.org. Outside the Walls Service Opportunities Operation Christmas Child (OCC) is a ministry of Samaritan's Purse. MBC collects various items all throughout the year and then has a box filling party in Nov. before they are shipped off. MBC usually fills and ships out between 800-1,000 boxes each year! Also, a group from MBC travels to the Dallas distribution center to help inspect all boxes within the region before their final shipping to the children. Items to be donated all year are: shoeboxes, and cash which we will use to buy items for the boxes and for shipping (this year $9 is the recommended amount for each box). You are so generous with donations for the shoe boxes; however, in order to fill 1000 this year, we need lots of shoe boxes, so please keep them coming! In August we are asking for pencils, pens, markers, crayons, scissors, sharpeners, glue sticks (no liquids) and erasers - all of these items should be on sale. Also, lots more soap & washcloths are needed. May you all be blessed! To find out more information about OCC, or to volunteer to serve in this ministry, please contact Carlene Cleveland at Volume 5, Issue 8 Page 3
4 Outside the Walls Service Opportunities JOY stands for Jesus first, others next, then you. The JOY Food Pantry is our Manchaca Baptist Church ministry that helps food-insecure local community families and individuals with non-perishable food items. The pre-packed bags usually contain such items as pinto beans, rice, peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, tuna, and other various can goods. Members are always invited to donate money or non-perishable food items so the Pantry is always stocked and ready. Bags are packed and ready to hand out to needy people who come to our church door. Some families come on a regular basis and others when they encounter a short-term need for food for their families. It is a churchwide ministry that exhibits awareness that this need exists close to home. Please remember that every 5 th Sunday, our church makes a special effort to collect food for the Pantry. If everyone remembers to bring a can or two on that Sunday, it will surely help more families, and also helps the Pantry budget. Items can be placed in the plastic bin located in the office foyer. The Angel House Soup Kitchen is located at 908 East Cesar Chavez in Austin. It has been a serving kitchen for the homeless since 1986 and founded by Frank Deutsch, Senior Pastor. Angel House serves from per day. It is staffed by Rev Mark and Cindy Smith and volunteers on a daily basis from various churches in the area. MBC serves at Angel House on the first Monday of each month from 10 am 12:30pm. We have a faithful staff but welcome anyone that would like to serve. Every year on Super Bowl Sunday there are donation pots at MBC to fund services at Angel House. Not only does Angel House provide meals, they also provide clothing and showers as needed. Donations of plastic bags and clothing are accepted at the collections area by the office. Contact Lee Lancaster, coordinator at if you would like to serve or want more information. Outside the Walls Service Opportunities The Baptist Community Center Mission has ministered to the physical and spiritual needs of needy people in the Austin area for 75 years. MBC is a financial sponsor, fall and spring food drive supporter, furnishes food for the Thanksgiving meal each year (fed 790 people last year )and gave table games and candy for the children s Christmas party. For the past 5 years, several MBC women have volunteered each Wednesday from 9am-noon to man the thrift shop. Always ready to take donated adult and children good clean, useable seasonal clothes, shoes, socks, etc. More volunteers are needed on Wednesdays. If interested, contact Aline Host, If you shop Randalls, you can go to Customer Service and join their good Neighborhood Program for the BCCM (#394). For an additional list of volunteer opportunities please contact Joyce Felps at or the Church Office. The Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) is comprised of churches, ministries and businesses within the Christian community of Greater Austin to form a disaster relief alliance to help those in need in times of disaster. ADRN's vision is to serve Christ by establishing a church network in the Greater Austin area that will meet the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of those affected by disaster (Luke 10:25-37). ADRN seeks to accomplish this vision by building a communication infrastructure that will enable and empower the Body of Christ to organize, mobilize, connect, prepare, train and respond quickly in the event of a disaster, great or small. Manchaca Baptist is a proud partner of the ADRN Network, and you can sign up to be a part of this great ministry. Go to the ADRN website: ( for more information. Page 4 The MESSENGER
5 Outside the Walls Service Opportunities The new school year begins August 21. So please start collecting K-cups for the teachers' workroom, and clipping the non-expired BOXTOPS for Education from various products you may purchase. The collection box will remain located near the office. Plans for this school year include an autumn luncheon, and there will be information on this once school begins again. Looking toward this school year, the opportunity to mentor with a child 30 minutes a week will continue to be available. Please keep this in mind and consider if this would be something you'd like to do. Contact Nan Cornell at for more information. TruCare is committed to saving babies by helping young pregnant women with some of those things they need. They are always in need of diapers and wipes. If you can, pick some up on your next shopping trip and bring them to the church anytime. I will make sure they get to the center. Also, if you have baby items in good condition to donate you can bring those to the church office too. If you would like to volunteer with the Center, please contact Leanne Key at Thank you, Karen Davis MBC Liasion for SAPRC Outside the Walls Service Opportunities Community First Village is a 27-acre master planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for the disabled, chronically homeless in Central Texas. A development of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, this transformative residential program exists to love and serve our neighbors who have been living on the streets, while also empowering the surrounding community into a lifestyle of service with the homeless. The Village is a place that enables our homeless brothers and sisters to heal. It s a place where they can rediscover hope, renew their purpose and restore their dignity. Most importantly, it s a place they can call home. House Blessings are celebrated every Saturday at 12 noon in the Community Kitchen area (near the windmill) and everyone is invited. These are very casual and a great way to see the community first hand. Stay tuned for more ways to get involved with this awesome project! Even in the long, hot summer, Project Linus continues to provide blankets for children in crisis. We will have our regular monthly blanket processing meeting on Sat Aug 19 from You don t need to be able to sew to participate. You can help by bagging blankets. In July Project Linus took blankets to Austin Recovery, Dell Children s, Sickle Cell, Center for Child Protection, Williamson County Victim Services, and Ronald McDonald House. As you can see we give blankets to a diverse group of organizations. We would love to have you become a part of our mission. 7 Christmas in August It s time for your first Christmas party of Won t you join us in the Choir Room on Sunday, August, 20 at 5:00 pm for your first Christmas party this year? Bring your favorite Christmas treat and wear something red and green as we get started on this year s pageant, The Greatest Story Ever Told. There will be lots of good food and door prizes will be awarded as we preview this year s music. It s not a myth, not a fairy tale, not a bedtime story. It is the true story of God s Son being born of a virgin, wrapped in swaddling clothes, and laid in a manger in Bethlehem. Angels told shepherds, and stargazers came from the Far East. This production follows the account of the Savior s birth from the viewpoints of many who witnessed it firsthand. It features the great Gaither Vocal Band song It s Still the Greatest Story Ever Told. We can t do it without you. This is a MBC project that needs help from all areas of the church. We need singers on all parts. You don t have to sing a solo we want you to join with the chorus of voices praising His Holy Name. Please pray about your participation in this musical gift. We must proclaim the gospel to those who may not have heard, and encourage believers to tell everyone so we all can have the hope, peace, and eternal salvation that the Author of this great story offers us.
