1 Newsletter Editor: Gloria Teague, From the President Hi Everyone! Orchid News Kentucky Orchid Society, Inc. September 2018 Louisville, KY September Speaker: Show chairman, Rick Willias KOS Show Prep Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Immanuel United Church of Christ 2300 Taylorsville Road 6:15 pm, Social hour, 7:00 pm Meeting Well it's almost time to bring in SOME of our orchids. It's rather sad because they really love it outside. Let me begin by saying Thanks to our Wine and Cheese Committee for doing such a fantastic job. Everything was organized and seemed to work. A special thank you to Dick and Joan Humke for hosting our first Wine and Cheese event. Wasn't it fun to mingle with your fellow orchidists? All the way from meeting more members, tasting great food to seeing where how Dick grows his orchids was a TOTAL evening of fun. There were so many people who contributed which made it so special. We are now working on our After the Show Party. That will be Saturday, September 29 th, 5:15-6:30 after the show. It's our way of saying thank you to all our KOS members who work so hard and thank you to all our vendors. Please jot it down now. Be on the lookout for an invite real soon. We need a pretty exact count so we know about ordering food and drink! It will be held on the patio of the church where the show is held. Other things we are involved with are: Kroger's at Springhurst on Sunday September 2 nd, Labor Day weekend. They are doing a magnificent job of promoting us. Today I was in Kroger's and taped on the registers is a beautiful flyer talking about this event. They are putting flyers in people s bags too! If you're a lover of Phals. they will be on sale that day. Come by and visit us between 11 and 4. Our goal is to get new members.
2 October 20 th is our picnic and auction. Please, if you have plants to bring, large and small, let's auction them. We will be ordering a few orchids from growers but surely our members have some to auction. Right? More details to follow. Please divide your plants and donate one or two for our auction. It will be at Jan Smith's house. November 7 th we will be at Gilda's House. Gilda was one of MY favorite comedians on Saturday Night Live in the early days. This house is for people who have cancer, like she did. We will be doing an orchid demonstration at 6:30 pm. Several people have signed up to help from KOS. They send out a newsletter for interested people on various events such as orchids, etc. November 7th at Gilda's House. Are we busy enough? A society is only as good as it's members. We have great members. Just remember, if a society is to grow we have to make changes. That is what I am trying so hard to accomplish with KOS. Thank you for allowing me to do this! Ruth Schneider, President rblschnei@gmail.com From the Vice President Hasn t this been the best orchid growing summer ever? Humidity, not too many days of 100+ temps. and adequate rain have been such a blessing. If you have been growing outside as I have this summer, there s been very little to do other than get a little fertilizer to the orchids in between or just after rains. All of this is terrific news since our show is rapidly approaching. It s time to stake up all hopeful spikes into just the right position, going ever so slow so none get snapped off. Check for bugs and if you are outside a little slug bait in the spiking orchids pots will get rid of those slimy pests before they eat off those buds and chew holes in the beautiful blooms. Last year I found a great product, Earth-tone Slug and Snail bait by Espoma. It is pet and environment friendly AND best of all, the slugs liked it more than my flowers! It s also a good time to get a round or 2 of a systemic insecticide on plants. Make sure to spray every 7 days to get them all. As always, some of our plants will bloom too early and some will be full of buds at show time but maybe there will be a couple that get it just right and put on a glorious display of flowers at just the right time! The program for the month of September has been set aside to go over all the last-minute details and needs to make our show a success. This will be hosted by Rick Willias, 2018 Show Chairman. Many volunteers are needed in so many capacities; it takes one night to make sure all needs are filled. So, please come out and support Rick as he helps all of us make this year s show the best ever! Plant Doctor and Beginner s Corner will be held at 6:15 until 7:00. If you have issues, even show related questions about your plant, feel free to bring them in. carefully. We will be addressing Watering Orchids in Beginner s Corner. Speakers for 2018: OCTOBER 20: KOS Annual Picnic; NOVEMBER 14: Jim Franz: Phragmipediums: South American Slippers and their Culture; DECEMBER 12: Annual Holidays Dinner
3 Pam LaRocco, Vice President Minutes The KOS monthly meeting held at the Immanuel United Church of Christ at 7:00 pm. There were 29 members present. Guests were Terrance. Welcome to our meeting. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as presented in the newsletter. Old Business President Ruth Schneider announced the passing of a former member and past president Mickey Peck. The club will send a sympathy card. A reminder about our Show dates, September 28 th for display setup and September 29 th 30 th for judging and sales. Then Gloria Teague will have it October/November, Jan Smith in December/January, Linda Solley-Kanipe in February/March, and Peg Revell asked to use it after that. It is an HP loaded with the KOS Show Program and we are working on getting AOS PLUS from the AOS. President Schneider asked if anyone ordered Cattlayas from Brian Spitzer in the Greater Cincinnati Orchid Society. No one ordered any. Ruth Schneider received a written request from Gilda s Club to participate in an Orchid Information event with them and a Spring 2019 How to Festival. Ruth and Liz Smith will visit them on Monday, August 13 th at their office at 4 pm to work out details. Richard Humke offered to host the get together for Wine and Cheese event on Friday, August 17 th, at 5 pm at his home. Also, a signup sheet was circulated for other events in August and at the Show. Rick Willias announced that 8 vendors will be at our Show. Gloria Teague sent out invitations to other clubs this week. Sue Phillips volunteered with Gloria Teague, Pam LaRocco, and Danetta Willias to setup our show display. Jim Mulloy and Sal Locascio will help assemble our new PVC backdrop for our display. As of now there are no volunteers for a theme committee for our show display. Pam Martin will bring new flyer sheets and Sal Locascio will have yard signs to hand out at our September Meeting. Ruth Schneider offered approximately 10 Kentucky Orchid Society stick pins for sale at $5 each. All were sold. New Business A How to info session is scheduled at Kroger Spinghurst for Sunday September 2 nd from 11 to 4 pm. A signup sheet was circulated for members help.
