They want the largest piece of pie. From earliest childhood we have an innate sense that more is bet ter, and we carry that into adulthood. We shy away from scarcity and gravitate toward plenty. We avoid want and embrace having. We seek to have savings, reserves, supplies, extras, storage bins. Of course, we can go overboard on abundance. Yet, we all know that just enough isn t enough. Today s gospel is about running out, not having enough. It is about a bride and groom potentially being embarrassed on their most impor tant day. It becomes about abundance signifying that all is well, that love and life abound. It becomes about Jesus hour. What is Jesus hour? It is a time of the revelation of God s immense gift of abundance. In this gospel, not one jar of water became wine, but six. Not a little bit of wine, but over a hundred gallons. Not partially illed jars, but to the brim. Not inferior wine, but good wine. Not just one sign, but the beginning of his signs. More is yet to come. In the more is God s glory revealed. In the more is God s abundance a sign of the fullness of Life and love God offers us. The epiphany of Jesus glory is a sign of the per sistence of God s overtures of love to us, a love so immense that it is not mea surable, not able to be contained, not ever exhausted. There are signs of God s abundant love God s most lavish gift to us all around us. What are the signs? Obvious miracles, yes, in Jesus time. But many miracles are still hap pening today: the gift of life at the birth of a baby, the peace of reconciliation, the warmth of faithful love, the satisfaction of success, the beauty of a sunrise or sunset. God s glory is revealed in many signs of abundance. Abundance, ultimately, is a sign of messianic times, of God s fullness of salvation offered to us. This is why Jesus came. In the abundance of who he is, Jesus reveals the full ness of who we might become. God s glory is God s Presence. Yes, God s glory is revealed in many signs of abundance. Most fully in Jesus himself. Most fully in us, the Body of Christ, as we come to deeper belief and continue his ministry. Fr. Jace REJOICE AND BE GLAD SURPRISES Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are illed with stories of God s surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are illed with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today s Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today s familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody s life not necessarily our own will be surprised for the better. Copyright J. S. 4 Diocesan News Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. In Peru alone, the 14 villages of Chazuta, in Moyobamba, are all located away from the city center, with the most remote only accessible by boat. The faithful in these communities do not have access to catechetical formation, and members often feel separated from the life of the universal Church. Through a grant from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, the religious congregation of the Missionaries of Jesus was able to provide faith formation, spiritual retreats, and workshops to nearly 250 people. Upon completion, participants were better equipped to help others deepen their faith and answer questions. The program also renewed their sense of commitment to their parishes and created stronger bonds within their own families. Through this program, members of the Chazuta villages felt the love and support of the universal Church. Please support programs like these and give generously in next week s collection. For more information, please visit Abrazando Cristo Mission Trip The Abrazando Cristo Mission trip for 2016 will be July 1st 10th to Nicaragua. Cost of the trip is $1,950 (covers all air and ground transportation, meals, lodging, tips, taxes, retreat and mission shirts).
