2 ON A SPRITUAL NOTE Have you ever noticed how often people grumbled at the things Jesus was doing? They must have enjoyed grumbling! In today s Gospel, when Jesus reaches out to Zacchaeus, people grumbled, He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner! When the woman bathed Jesus feet with her tears, and dried them with her hair, they grumbled, If he knew what kind of woman this is, he would not allow this! When Jesus healed someone on a Sabbath, they grumbled that he was breaking the Sabbath rest! Why did they assume the worst of Jesus? He went to stay with a sinful tax collector: did that mean he approved of cheating and stealing? He allowed the woman to weep at his feet: did that mean he approved of the woman s sinfulness? No! It meant he was reaching out to save what was lost. But why did people not assume that? Why assume the worst? Can we ask ourselves the same question? When we see someone doing something that surprises us, do we assume the worst, or do we try to understand? God is like the parent who loves all her or his children very, very much, even if they do not get along with one another. If a mother is kind or gives a special treat to one, the others grumble, She loves him more than us! And then the same thing happens with the shoe on the other foot. Actually, that mother (or father) loves all the children, and wishes fervently that they would love one another. Think of the person who bothers you the most: the one you do not want to be in your presence. You wish this person would just go away. Then you would not have to bother with him or her. So, why does God love that person? Why does God wish that you two could get along? Don t you think God could help make it happen? After all, you both hope to spend eternity in the same heaven! When you turn to God to speak about this person, do you have to grumble? We offer prayers and sympathy to the family and friends of Arletha Pearl Smith Carl Burton May they rest in God s peace. 3 NEXT Sunday and Monday, November 6 & 7, we will have a visit by Monsignor Daniel Kutys. He is the Vicar General ( 2 nd to the Archbishop) and is making a canonical visit to our Parish. He will celebrate our Parish Feast Day Mass, meet the Parish Council, Finance Council and visit the School. He will also intervew Father Thorne, as well as, inspect the Sacramental Records. 4 On Sunday, November 20, we will be blessed by the presence of Bishop John McIntyre as we celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation upon our young people of our Parish. Please keep the candidates, their sponsors and families in your prayers. Congratulations to Sister Lynn Marie! Sister Lynn Marie has been hired by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia s Office for Catechetical Formation as a consultant on African American Catholic Spirituality on a part-time basis. We are blessed that Sister will continue her ministry at Saint Martin de Porres Catholic Church. As we soon approach Christmas, our Parish Social Ministry is taking sign-ups for families in need. Please visit the Church Hall after Mass to sign up. Please support the Sisters of Saint Joseph who will be selling chances next Sunday, November 6, after Mass. This chance drive suports Villa Saint Joseph, a retirement home for the sisters and lay persons. The prices is $5.00 for a book of six and $1.00 for a single chance. Many of us were taught in school by the Sisters, so let us thank and support this effort.
