5 Huffy Using Our Vocabulary in Sentences! Schlep I get huffy when my sister blasts her music while I am trying to study. A. It was a schlep to the supermarket. B. I complained to my sister about our schlep to school because the mile hike always made me tired. Which sentence is better? Why? Sentence B is better because it gives the reader more details that allow them to use context clues to determine the meaning of schlep. The siblings walk to school is a difficult journey because of its length and exhausting effect. In Sentence A, the narrator gives us no details to prove that the supermarket trip is a schlep.

11 2. At first, how does Auggie feel about attending public school? How do his Mom and Ms. Petosa calm his school fears? Auggie feels petrified about attending public school. He is so terrified that his nerves don t just feel like butterflies in his stomach but pigeons! He is scared because he has been homeschooled by his mom for grades K-4. Helping to calm his fears, his mom tells Auggie that he scored extremely well on the entrance exam to Beecher Prep. One of Auggie s teachers, Ms. Petosa, also helps by disproving Auggie s old, unfriendly, and foul teacher expectations.
12 2. Why do you think Mr. Tushman organizes student tour guides instead of giving Auggie a tour himself? 3. What does Mr. Browne give his students every month? Describe the assignment. 4. How do Summer and Auggie bond at lunchtime?
13 2. Why do you think Mr. Tushman organizes student tour guides instead of giving Auggie a tour himself? Mr. Tushman might have wanted to familiarize Auggie with some of his future classmates, so he would already know people on his first day. He might have also wanted the tour to be less intimidating and more informal and friendly. 3. What does Mr. Browne give his students every month? Describe the assignment. 4. How do Summer and Auggie bond at lunchtime?

He might have also wanted the tour to be less intimidating and more informal and friendly. 3. What does Mr. Browne give his students every month? Describe the assignment. As Auggie s E.L.A. teacher, Mr. Browne gives his students a precept every month. At the end of the month, they must submit an essay interpreting the inspirational motto. Over summer vacation, students are expected to mail their own original precept to Mr. Browne. 4. How do Summer and Auggie bond at lunchtime?

As Auggie s E.L.A. teacher, Mr. Browne gives his students a precept every month. At the end of the month, they must submit an essay interpreting the inspirational motto. Over summer vacation, students are expected to mail their own original precept to Mr. Browne. 4. How do Summer and Auggie bond at lunchtime? Since both students have seasonal names Summer and August the students brainstorm other classmates who have names that relate to summer months to determine who can sit at that lunch table.
16 5. Why was Auggie s lack of a response to Summer included in the book? We can make this the summer only lunch table, [Summer] said. Only kids with summer names can sit here. Let s see, is there anyone here named June or July? There s Julian. That s like the name Julia, which comes from July. I didn t say anything ( The Summer Table, 52). 6. When is Auggie s birthday? Why is Auggie disappointed with his birthday party?

Let s see, is there anyone here named June or July? There s Julian. That s like the name Julia, which comes from July. I didn t say anything ( The Summer Table, 52). Auggie s silence when Summer mentions that Julian s name would allow him to sit at their lunch table reveals that Auggie does not really want Julian to eat with them. It reveals that there is tension between Auggie and Julian, highlighting their man v. man conflict. It also shows an effect of Julian s bullying: Auggie doesn t want Julian anywhere near him. 6. When is Auggie s birthday? Why is Auggie disappointed with his birthday party? Auggie s birthday party is on October 10 th. Auggie wants to have a big bowling party instead of the usual little house party. He invites his entire homeroom class, plus Summer. However, only a few students attend Jack Will, Summer, Christopher, Reid, Tristan, both Maxes - and Julian doesn t even R.S.V.P.
19 7. Why is Halloween Auggie s favorite holiday? 8. What do Auggie and Julian originally intend to dress up as for Halloween? Why do both change their costumes?
20 7. Why is Halloween Auggie s favorite holiday? Auggie thinks Halloween is the best holiday because he can wear a mask, so no one can see his facial difference. Therefore, no one thinks he looks weird, so he is treated like everyone else. Although he stopped at around seven years-old, Auggie used to wear an astronaut helmet everyday for this reason. 8. Therefore, no one thinks he looks weird, so he is treated like everyone else. Although he stopped at around seven years-old, Auggie used to wear an astronaut helmet everyday for this reason. 8. What do Auggie and Julian originally intend to dress up as for Halloween? Why do both change their costumes? Initially, Auggie planned to be Boba Fett and Julian wanted to be Jango Fett. But these two Star Wars characters are father and son, respectively. Auggie and Julian didn t want to be associated with one another through their costumes. Auggie makes a fake excuse, telling his dad the Boba Fett costume was too difficult to get on so he switched to Bleeding Scream. Julian arrives to school dressed as Darth Sidious to make fun of Auggie. He thinks Darth Sidious s melted cheeks and eyes resemble Auggie s facial difference.
22 9. Why doesn t Auggie want to go trick-or-treating on Halloween? 10. Identify ONE Star Wars character mentioned in PART ONE and explain why it was included in the story.
23 9. Why doesn t Auggie want to go trick-or-treating on Halloween? Auggie doesn t want to go trick-or-treating on Halloween because at school that day, Julian dressed up as Darth Sidious to make fun of Auggie s facial difference. He also overheard Jack Will complaining about having Auggie always sit next to him in class and accuses Auggie of following him around. 10. Identify ONE Star Wars character mentioned in PART ONE and explain why it was included in the story.
24 9. DARTH SIDIOUS: To reveal Julian s emotional bullying and cruelty toward Auggie, Julian mentions Darth Sidious and dresses up as him for Halloween to imply the character's melted face looks like Auggie. WOOKIE: Auggie alludes to a Wookie, a tall, brown-furred creature. Through this allusion, Auggie reveals that he can put himself in his classmates s shoes and understand why they stare at him. If a Wookie showed up at Beecher Prep, Auggie admits that he would stare at him.
25 10. Identify ONE Star Wars character mentioned in PART ONE and explain why it was included in the story. MON MOTHMA: To reveal that his school fears are decreasing, Auggie mentions that his teacher, Ms. Petosa, resembles Mon Mothma, a kinder, younger, and more approachable version of the educator that he was expecting. He feared that his teacher would be like old, cranky Miss Fowl from Jimmy Newtron.
