Sir: CON I HIJl liuf t I have the honor to transmit herewith for such action cts the Department deems appropriate copy of a letter of February 1, 1945 addressed by Jacob ETTLINGER of Stock~olm to the Department of State, submitting three lists of close relatives and friends who are now said to be interned in German concentration camps. Mr. Ettlinger, who is a Swedish national, is managing director of the Swedish firm, AB. Metall- & Bergprodukter, Stockholm, medium-sized importers and exporters of ore, ferro-alloys, metals, metal scrap, chemicals, woodpulp, etc. Mr. Ettlinger in calling at the Legation expressed an interest in having his re la ti ves and friends included 1-n an exchange of persona between Germany and the United States. After a careful statement by a member of the Legation staff of the difficulties in the matter, Mr. Ettlinger nevertheless requested the Legation to transmit to the Department the enclosed material. Gentlemen: With reference to the conversation which I had with the Secretary of your Embassy at Stoclcholm, Mr. Cabot Coville, I hereby take the liberty of approaching you in the following matter, and I beg to thank you in advance for all you may do in order to help me in the interests of my near relatives and many friends of mine, who had the misfortune to come to a concentration ce.mp at Bergen-Belsen in the vicinity of Hanover. I em aware of the feet that about one hundred of these unfortunate people have been exchanged through the good off ices of the State Secretary against German citizens. I have been informed that the uersons mentioned hiwe already arrived in Switzerland for transportation to Philippeville. The object of this letter is now to ask for your help so that also the other unfortunette inhabitants of the Bergen-Belsen camp might be released in the same way. My personal interest embodies.in the first line my brother-in-law, Mr. Hermann Isrfi,el Dief'enbronner, and his wife my sister, Mrs. Elsa Diefenbronner, born Ettlinger, Eergen-Belsen, Ba.re.eke 11 E. The names of my other friends are to be found on the list enclosed. I am willing to reimburse the expenses which you have in connectlon with this transaction, a.nd I want a.gain to extend to you my thanks for your kindness. I am ta.king the liberty to appeal to you, because everybody appreciates greatly the work which you have performed for the help of the suffering humanity.
