1 CZJ EWY002 com Title The Evil of Rhetoric A Critique of Augustine s Criticism on Rhetoric in Confessions Abstract The classical rhetors from Gorgias to Ciceroall considered that the rhetoric can create a refined community through the use of philosophical truth. HoweverSt. Augustine denied this optimistic view. This paper tries to analyze what St. Augustine saw as the evil of rhetoric and examines his interpretations of the consciousness of community formed by rhetoric.
