1 JONATHAN M. KALTENBACH Department of Theology Home Address: 2021 Berkley Place 130 Malloy Hall South Bend, IN (443) (cell) (574) EDUCATION PH.D. IN THEOLOGY AUGUST 2017 Primary Area: History of Christianity (Medieval and Patristic Theology) Secondary Area: Systematic Theology Dissertation: Christ the Priest in the Theology of St. Thomas Aquinas Director: Professor Joseph Wawrykow This dissertation studies the teaching of Thomas Aquinas on Christ as priest and mediator in the third part of the Summa theologiae, where this theme strongly influences as well as structures the Christological (III.1-59) and sacramental (III.60-90) sections in important ways. In more detail, it dispels confusion over the relation between priests and mediators by recourse to Thomas scriptural commentaries, argues that Thomas view of sacrifice develops even within the Summa itself, and provides new insights on our participation in the sacrifice of Christ. It also argues that a profound development toward a stronger emphasis on Christ s priesthood is discernible in Thomas thought from his early Commentary on the Sentences, through the Commentary on Hebrews, to his mature work in the Summa theologiae. This introductory course in theology was required to include sustained treatment of both the Old and New Testament as well as an introduction to the early Church. Instead of these sections being treated in historical order, however, the readings from all three periods were integrated according to the structure of the ancient creeds. As a result, this model emphasized the importance of Tradition for theology and the mutual relation of the Old and New Testaments, while incorporating a broad range of patristic texts throughout the semester.
