1 1 1. Course Description PT 725/LW 925 Liturgical Theology January Term 2019 January 14-18, 2019 Trinity School for Ministry/North American Lutheran Seminary The Rev. Dr. Frank C. Senn This course probes the ways of finding theological meaning in liturgical orders. It understands liturgical theology to be theological reflection on liturgical/sacramental orders, not a general theology of worship. The course will explore the relationship between liturgy and doctrine (lex orandi, lex credendi) throughout the history of Christian liturgy. Important examples of liturgical/sacramental theology from the ancient, medieval, Reformation, and modern periods will be studied. 2. Course Objectives Students will become acquainted with the relationship between ritual and meaning, liturgy and doctrine. They will become familiar with the mystagogical homilies of the church fathers, liturgical commentaries of medieval theologians (especially Germanus of Constantinople and Amalar of Metz), the liturgical reflections of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Jeremy Taylor; and understand liturgical theology methodologies of Alexander Schmemann, Gordon Lathrop, Geoffrey Wainwright, and Aidan Kavanagh. In the course project students will do their own liturgical theology in preaching and parish teaching. 3. Learning Outcomes Students will know the main liturgical orders and sacramental practices of ancient, medieval (Byzantine and Latin), Reformation, and modern periods in order to follow the commentaries on these orders by bishops, scholars, reformers, and theologians from these different periods. They will understand the difference between typological, allegorical, and historical critical hermeneutics. They will be able to do liturgical theology based on the liturgical orders used in their parish in mystagogical preaching, parish adult education, and articles in parish newsletters. 4. Course Texts

Course Requirements Try to read the common text by Fagerberg before the week begins. Submit to Dr. Senn a list of the other books you will be reading by the second day of class. Attend class sessions, ask questions, and participate in discussions. The course project is either to prepare a sermon series (5) or a series of newsletter articles (shorter, therefore 12) explicating the liturgy used in your parish or congregation. In your sermons or articles incorporate the principles of liturgical theology you have learned in this course. In other words, draw out the theology embedded in the liturgical order, both in texts and actions. The sermon series may be appropriate for the five weeks of Lent. Since sermons should not discuss methodology, prepare a newsletter or bulletin blurb that will explain what you are doing and attach that to the sermons you submit. Students who are doing a sermon series may want to look at Craig Satterlee s Ambrose of Milan s Method of Mystagogical Preaching for guidance in preaching mystagogical homilies. The newsletter series of articles may break up the liturgy into parts. If the congregation regularly experiences more than one liturgy, e.g. so-called traditional and so-called contemporary or the Holy Communion and Vespers, include both in your articles. Students who are writing a series of articles may want to look at Alexander Schmemenn s The Eucharist as a model of liturgical commentary. Since footnotes won t be used in sermons or newsletter articles, list references at the end of each sermon or article. You should also indicate what liturgy you are commenting on. If it s not in BCP or LBW/LBW I will need a copy of the order attached to your sermons or articles. The sermons or articles will be ed to Dr. Senn by the end of February (master s students) or the end of March (doctoral students). fcsenn70@gmail.com.
5 5 6. Student Evaluation Your grade for the course will be based on your sermons or articles. I will take into account the overall structure of your series (how you organize it), how coherent the series is, and how familiar you are with primary and secondary literature as you communicate to your parish/congregation. 7.
