RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED St John s United Church of Christ 801 South Mechanic Street Jackson, MI Website: Church office (517) Pastor: Daniel Kidder-McQuown President: Vickie Steck Office Administrator: Bobby James Ju September 2018 September = School = Learning Does September bring school to your mind? It does for me. I loved going to school growing up. As a young mother, I was always glad to have my children go back to school in September whew! When they left home to go to college, there was a tear in my eye but also a pride in how much they had accomplished in their school years and learning. Now in September, I watch my grandchildren: they are excited to know who their teacher will be and anxious about who will be in their classes. It occurs to me that learning experiences almost always involve others. Robert and his Christian Ed crew have the right idea gather people together and we ll interact and learn. Gather people together and make it fun to be a part of a group that will laugh, learn, and support one another in growing our knowledge of a good and gracious God. Those thoughts all led me to how we can admire and respect one another not to mention learn from being together. The Jackson Personal Care Ministry continues to serve the community because of your great support. Thank you! Bobby is a giving soul. Bobby finds joy in helping others. Learn to be unselfish like Bobby. Duane studies his Bible often. Duane appreciates God s stories. Love to learn more about God like Duane. Barb lives her faith fearlessly. Barb wants to serve those with the greatest need. Learn to serve God like Barb. Diamond s voice is a God given gift. Diamond shares her voice with the church. Learn to share your gifts like Diamond. Muriel turns to God with all things. Muriel knows that God hears prayer. Learn to pray like Muriel. June loves coming to church every Sunday. June invited Marcia to come, too. Invite friends to join our worship like June does. Come enjoy September with everyone at church let s grow in God together! Vickie and Jan
2 Prayer Requests Janell Bumpus passed away into God s eternal care on Thursday, August 30, Please pray for her family, church family and friends, as she was a vital part in all our lives. See her obituary in this Encounter. Erv & Phyllis were in a rollover car accident. Both are miraculously fine. God is good. David Chesney had a heart valve replacement and is at home recovering and is doing well. Prayers do work. David is asking for prayers for his partner Larry. He had surgery the first part of the week. Jeannine Daugherty is home and doing well after having a heart valve repair. Thank you God. Steve Tousley, was at HF Allegiance. Further tests are being done, but it is believed he had a heart attack and diverticulitis. Thank you Dan for visiting him and his dad Albert. Prayers are needed for Pastor Van Covington as his short term memory has become a big issue. Let s keep Beth Long-Williams in loving prayer as she is continuing with chemo. We are happy to see Linda Reasoner has started to come back to church and some church functions. Pray for Gary, Linda and Jean Allen as they search for a single story home. Please continue to pray for Faith Smith. Let us remember Ty Heard s daughter, Debra Town. Her birthday would have been September 30th. This year will be especially hard for Ty, due to Debra s passing this year. For our church neighborhood and surrounding area. Joy Announcements A very big shout out to all the people who helped Kathy Welker move. Our church members are so awesome as they help move 3 other of Kathy s house mates. Thank you Duane Leece, Dick Poor, Art Bonner, John Roggenbuk, Carl Robinson, and Pastor Dan who worked tirelessly in the hot humid weather to ensure Kathy was moved and settled in. Bobby James closed on her home on August 28, Her and her cat, Sissy, are settling in and enjoying the peacefulness and comfort of the house and neighborhood. The new address is 1310 Leroy, Jackson, MI News From the Church Fundraisers MIS race weekend was August 10-12th. Katie Reynolds, Ann Church, Amanda Canter, Art Bonner, Carl Robinson, Joe Robinson, Reis Baker and two of Katie s friends worked two merchandise booths. It raised $2, for the church. Thank you Katie and your crew for an awesome job. Country Side Services A friendly reminder: Jan Middlebrook has been a blessing in leading services at Country Side Retirement Center on Robinson Rd. the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Jan states we have awesome and very reliable volunteers to make this mission happen. Pastor Dan led the service on August 15, We are thankful Jan Middlebrook was able to attend. Grand River Theology Pastor Dan has set aside space at the Grand River Brewery at 117 W. Louis Glick Highway in Jackson, MI, for interesting talk on questions we might have when it comes to God, church and theology. Each month we will be asked a question on theology and asked for our input. Please join us on Tuesday September 18, 2018 starting at 6 p.m.. All are invited to come and share your thoughts and enjoy food and drink (each person responsible for their own bill/tab). RSVP appreciated but not required, to Dan at mcq188@gmail.com or text/call to This event has been held for two months and those who have come have found the conversation interesting and fun. Pastor Dan brings a new prospective and keeps the mood fun, loving and informative Baby Shower This was the 12th year for the Baby Shower, with 65 moms and 73 guests attending. They attended classes on lead exposure, safe sleep and soothing crying babies. Moms really loved the baby clothing selection, one mom cried with joy at finding such pretty clothes for her baby girl! Moms also picked out a stroller, high chair, pack and play or baby swing for their baby at the drawing at the end of the shower. Thanks to Duane Leece and John Roggenbuck for making sure our garage sale items were in good condition and had fresh batteries if needed! Nancy Hackworth at St John's UCC table handed each mom a small bag of baby toiletries (selected and packed by Kathy Schroeder and friends). Barb and Amanda fixed a great lunch. Katie Anderson was once again our wonderful master of ceremonies. We had so many wonderful volunteers, too many to list. They made sure this large group of Moms and guests felt welcome and felt God's love here at our church.

The Martin Luther King Diversity Committee A Collaboration between the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, the Jackson County Intermediate School District, the Jackson Human Relations Commission and Members of the Jackson Community Summer 2018 Dear Community Member: Please join us as an Adult Facilitator at our upcoming Middle School Challenge Days. Challenge Days are powerful, high energy programs in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning processes. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression. The Challenge Day program is designed to unite the members of the school community and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the school population. Challenge Days also successfully address issues of violence, teasing, social oppression, racism, harassment, conflict management, suicide, peer pressure, alcohol and drugs. We are pleased to be able to bring Challenge Days to Jackson County middle school youth! Since 1987, the Challenge Day Program has touched the lives of over half-a-million teens and adults nationwide. The Challenge Day Program has received numerous awards from the juvenile justice system, government officials and many school districts and cities throughout the nation. We have offered Challenge Days to middle school youth for eight years in Jackson. You can find out more about the Challenge Day organization at and more about Jackson s Middle School Challenge Project at We encourage adults to volunteer for a day as positive role models for the benefit of the youth. The program welcomes parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, police officers, elected officials, community members and any other interested adults. This allows youth to see another side of these adults in addition to their assigned community roles. Please notify me if you know of any adults who would like to be a part of the Challenge Day Program or feel free to forward this invitation to persons you think might be interested in participating. Adult Facilitators are crucial for the success of the day. Challenge Day staff will meet with all Facilitators for about 30 minutes prior to the start of the program to let you know what is needed from you and to answer your questions. In order for the pre-program meeting to begin on time, please arrive at least 40 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the program. No prior training is necessary other than the morning check-in meeting. The Challenge Day staff closely monitors the program and our Leaders will give all instructions throughout the day. You must be able to remain on site and participate fully for the entire program, including 30 minutes after the program at the end of the day for a post-challenge Day debriefing. We hope you will be able to join us for this wonderful experience on one of the following days: Monday, November 5; Tuesday, November 6; or Wednesday, November 7, 2018, starting no later than 7:30 a.m. and lasting until about 3:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please me at kathy.ott@jcisd.org or feel free to call me at You may also contact Catherine Brechtelsbauer at (catherine.brechtelsbauer@jcisd.org). If you can join us on one of the days, please provide me your name, phone number, and address by September 1. I ll get back to you in September to ask for your date and location preference. Thanks! Sincerely, Kathy Ott MLK Diversity Committee

8 Bumpus, Janell M. a young 78 year old, of Jackson, Michigan, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2018 at Henry Ford Allegiance Health, under the care of dedicated and kind neurosurgeons, trauma and cardiac care doctors, nurses, and specialists. Janell was born on May 28, 1940 to Mildred and Lewis Pfitzmaier in Jackson, Michigan. She was one of five children -Charles (Pat) Pfitzmaier, Marilyn (Richard) Allen, Elaine (Paul) Whitney, Marjorie (Robert) Dittis. She was married to her one true love, Thomas Bumpus, and they had three children, Janeen (Bill) Bush, Thomas James (Sherry) Bumpus, and Joel Bumpus. She was preceded in death by her mother and dad, husband, very special brother and two very special sisters. Despite the passing of her husband in 2000, Janell lived a very full life as a proud parent, grandparent, aunt, great aunt, and sister, daughter spending quality time with Marilyn, Marjorie and Elaine as well as her brothers and sisters in law, Charles and Joan Bumpus (Stockbridge), and Robert and Jan Bumpus (Wausau, Wi.). Her mother-in-law, Doris Young was also very special to her and lived until She cherished her many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. They were ALL very special to her and she loved them. Janell also valued many lifelong friends in her church and her work. Janell valued her work and was extremely dedicated to both Jackson Public Schools and St. Johns United Church of Christ, Jackson, Michigan. She was employed and put everything she had into her work as a master educator and church elder, senior and youth choir director, committee(s) leader and member, church school leader and mentor and friend. As an educator, she valued every child and helped others to recognize the potential and opportunity for ALL. As an elder and leader in her church, she humbly cherished her relationship with God and the need for her faith to be strong in good times and especially during struggles. Her ability to listen and be patient, to forgive and offer unconditional love was ALWAYS her expectation. Janell loved music and shared her vocal talents in the choir, with many over the duration of her life. Janell M.Bumpus was a very proud grandparent of Noah, Connor and Spencer Parker Bush, and Sydney, Matthew, Christian and Alexander James (AJ) Bumpus. Her passion for their academic, athletic, musical, and playtime opportunities (July Mackinac Island Family trip and MSU Football games 40 plus years) was evident in her very active participation and interest. She lived for each moment to celebrate their successes and provide encouragement and unconditional love when they were challenged. Janell achieved many great successes in her full life including but not limited to the following: Diploma from Jackson High School in 1958 with Honors, Bachelor of Arts in Education with a minor in Music and Masters of Arts in Education, both from her highly regarded Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. Go GREEN. Michigan State University is where she met and fell in love, on a blind date, her wonderful husband, Tom, for over 36 years. Their love and laughter was a true model for her children and grandchildren. Janell began teaching for Jackson Public Schools in 1962, retiring in 2010, but continued to tutor. She provided a quiet but strong, loving presence in everyone's life and taught us invaluable lessons until the very end of her life on earth. Her favorite phrases, "It's all good" and "Let it go" represented how she lived her life: Always being hopeful, never giving up and never keeping score, demonstrating kindness, love and patience with every step. A visitation will take place at Desnoyer Funeral Home, 204 North Blackstone, Jackson, Mi. on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 4-7 p.m. A Celebration of Life Memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 10, 2018 at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 801 S. Mechanic St. Jackson, Michigan, with Pastors Jay Cummings and Dan Kidder- McQuown officiating. Private interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family wishes to extend appreciation for the support of the hospital staff, and friends and family who made every effort to provide their love and concern for Janell and her family. Janell Bumpus valued EACH person in her life and made them feel important and special. Contributions in Janell's memory can be made to, Cascades Humane Society, Jackson Public Schools or St. John United Church of Christ. Items Needed Here at St. John s UCC Per Carl, we are in need of a snowblower for this coming winter. The one we have is broken and is unrepairable. Please contact Carl at (734) if you come across a used one and it is affordable. If possible take a picture and text Carl the information on it. We are also in need of a trailer to haul food for the pantry. Each month Dick Poor provides his trailer and services and helps Carl go get all the food needed for the monthly Community Pantry. Dick s trailer has seen better days and is in need of repairs Sadly, a trailer was purchased last week with a monetary gift from a member, but stolen off of church property two days later. It was locked up, yet the thief/thieves found a way to steal it. Please contact Carl at (734) if you come across a used one and it is affordable. If possible take a picture and text Carl the information on it. American Red Cross Thank you American Red Cross blood drive was held here July 30, This is just another example of what St. John s United Church of Christ does for not just our community but for the good of all.
