As part of National Tie One on Day, buy an apron, bake something, tuck a note of encouragement in the pocket of the apron, wrap the baked good in the apron and give it to someone in need. 2Little Red Door Cancer Agency raised a record breaking $351,174 for cancer patients in central Indiana during the 9th Annual Face of Hope Breakfast. The event was held on Nov. 17 in the Expo Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. More than 1,100 people attended the breakfast this year, the most in event history. Proceeds from the Face of Hope Breakfast go to providing transportation to and from cancer treatments, support services, and more to help cancer patients. 3 The Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade has a storied history but did you know that it wasn t the first store to sponsor a parade in celebration of the holiday? According to the History Channel, the Philadelphia department store called Gimbel s sponsored a parade in The Macy s parade started four years later and gained even more prominence after being featured in the hit film Miracle on 34th Street. Troy Payne, with the Crawfordsville Street Department, worked with others to hang snowflake lights this week in downtown Crawfordsville. The downtown will be even more festive after the Christmas tree is lit at the Montgomery County Courthouse to kick off Downtown Party night on Saturday. hours Monday. All banks will also be closed for business to observe the holiday. For grocery needs, Walmart is open 24 hours as is County Market, but both Kroger stores will close at 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Kroger South will re-open Friday morning at 7 a.m. Pharmacies at both Kroger locations will also be closed as well as Walgreens, but CVS will be open. Big R and Home Depot will also be closed for the day as well. Most restaurants around town will also be closed, minus Cracker Barrel, which will be open for normal business hours, and Taco Bell will open at 5 p.m. until 3 a.m. Saturday fire ruled accidental A fire that occurred at 511 Whitlock Ave. in Crawfordsville Saturday evening has been ruled accidental. A release from the City of Crawfordsville said that an investigation had been completed by the Indiana State Fire Busenbark Marshal and the Crawfordsville Police Department. They determined that the fire started on the couch in the front room by accident. Rebecca Coonse, 40, was rescued from the fire and remains in critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital, as of Tuesday morning. Crawfordsville Fire Chief Scott Busenbark said that no other people were in the house and that the fire was contained to the front room. When asked if this house fire could be related to the fire on Nov. 6 at the County Highway Department garage, Busenbark said, No reason to think that. Members of the community can receive a meal on Thanksgiving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Ladoga Christian Church, 124 W. Elm St. in Ladoga. Deliveries are available for shut-ins or those without transportation. For delivery, call Becky Walters at or the church at and leave a message with a call back number. There s no charge for the dinner, but donations are gladly accepted. Local church is drop-off location for gift drive First Baptist Church in Crawfordsville will serve as a dropoff location for the Samaritan s Purse project Operation Christmas Child the world s largest Christmas project of its kind. During National Collection Week, Nov , participating Crawfordsville residents will donate shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, notes of encouragement and fun toys, such as a doll or soccer ball for Operation Christmas Child to deliver to children in need around the world. This year, Crawfordsville and surrounding cities residents hope to contribute more than 10,271 shoebox gifts toward the 2016 global goal of reaching 12 million children. Collection days are Nov. 14 to Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 20 from 8 a.m. to noon and Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Linden Depot preps for open house The Linden Depot Museum is preparing to present its annual 7-weekend Christmas Open House beginning Nov. 18. The theme this year is The Magic Sleigh. The museum will be open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 18 to Jan. 2 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. City cleaning up leaves Tired of the fall leaves already? Well kick them to the curb the city will do the rest. Residents of Crawfordsville should round up their leaves and place them near the curb so that crews from the Crawfordsville Street Department can come vacuum them up. Crews started the pickup process Monday and will continue for several weeks. They started in the southwest part of the city and are working in a counter-clockwise circle. The annual Sugar Creek Trail Thanksgiving Day Pie Run is set! This year s iteration includes a competitive 5k run, 2-mile fun run/walk and a free 200-yard kids run. South Blvd., Crawfordsville, IN Registration is also available the day of, starting at 8 a.m. PALgroup meeting weekly PALgroup Parents of Addicted Loved Ones is a national organization for parents, family members, and significant others who have loved ones who are addicted to drugs and/ or alcohol. The local group meets each Thursday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Crawfordsville. The primary goal of PAL is to provide hope through education and support for parents, family members, and others who dealing with addicted loved ones. Each week there is an educational component that informs participants about addiction and issues related to addiction. There is also a portion for discussion and sharing of experiences. In addition, Palgroup facilitators, although laypeople who must have an addicted child or significant other in order to serve as such, are trained to facilitate the meetings. Every four to six weeks, a professional addiction counselor or social worker will be invited to speak on a relevant topic or issue. Changes to Civitan meeting dates The Montgomery County Civitan Club is making a change to its meeting dates. The club will now meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The meetings will continue to be at noon at the Creekside Lodge in Crawfordsville. Open gym/facilities for public Southmont High School field house, gymnasium and weight room are available to the public on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. (subject to change due to High school athletics events and school closure due to weather). Join the 4-H Scuba Diving Club Have an interest in scuba diving, aquatic life and marine environments? Join Purdue Extension Diving Club and learn about these things and much more! Kiwanis looking for members Kiwanis was established to serve the needs of children worldwide in The Kiwanis Club has been a fixture in Crawfordsville for 95 years and now meets every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Donnelly Room at Crawfordsville District Public Library. Each meeting consists of a meal, brief business meeting and a program. The programs are diverse and always engaging. Louise (Pearson) Wiggins, 94, Williamsport, formerly Newtown, died on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016 at St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital. Mrs. Wiggins was born on Dec. 14, 1921 in Warren County. She was the daughter of Asa and Fredericka (Vester) Pearson. She was a 1940 graduate of Williamsport High School. She married Raymond Wiggins of Mellott on May 10, 1941 and he preceded her in death on Nov. 9, Mrs. Pearson was a farm wife until the death of her husband, then moved to Lafayette and worked as a floral designer at Clark Floral until retiring in 1987 and moving to Newtown. She was a member of the Newtown Community Church where she had many friends. She was also an auxiliary member of Quigle-Palin Post of the American Legion. She liked to garden and visit with friends. She also liked working jigsaw puzzles and was active in church activities when she was able. Survivors include a son, Robert A. (Patty) Wiggins of rural Attica; a daughter, Sharon D. (Bill) Hartman of Iona, Mich.; a grandson, Scott (Paula) Wiggins; three step-grandchildren, Tracey Wagner, Joe Foust and Andy (Rachel) Foust; three great-grandchildren, Bryce, Brent and Faith Wiggins; four step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Pearson; and a sister, Ruth (Pearson) Godbey. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26 at Family and Friends Funeral Home. Harshbarger Sept. 12, 1927 Nov. 22, 2016 Brooky May (Hutson) Harshbarger, 89, Hillsboro, passed away in the emergency room of the Franciscan St. Elizabeth Medical Center Crawfordsville Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016 at 2:50 a.m. Mrs. Harshbarger was born south of Hillsboro on Sept. 12, 1927, the daughter of the late Harry Verner and D. Undine (Harding) Hutson. She was a life resident of the Hillsboro community, graduating from Hillsboro High School in On May 19, 1945, she married Harold LeRoy Harshbarger in the Darlington Christian Church. Together, they farmed the family farm south of Hillsboro for many years. Harold preceded Brooky in death on April 25, Mrs. Harshbarger was an active member of the Hillsboro United Methodist Church and was active in the Methodist Church Women. She was a member of the Harmony Club in Hillsboro. She was an avid doll collector, collecting Madam Alexander and Barbie Dolls. Survivors include a son, David L. (Sally) Harshbarger of Kalispell, Mont.; a daughter, Sue Lynn (the late Randall) Anderson of Crawfordsville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lena Boling of Pasadena, Calif., Margaret Starkey of Tonica, Ill., and Carson (Denton) Hoskins of Waynetown; two brothers, James C. Hutson of Veedersburg and Kenneth (Brenda) Hutson of Lafayette; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eulalia Caldwell; and three brother, Joel E. Box 272 Crawfordsville, IN main: classifieds: fax: Local legislators prep for General Assembly Local legislators began work at the Statehouse today in preparation for the 120th Indiana General Assembly. Tuesday was Organization Day at the Statehouse, the ceremonial start of each assembly. Organization Day is marked by the swearing in of new and re-elected General Assembly members as well as the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides each Senate and House of Representatives caucus with the opportunity to organize before session officially reconvenes on Jan. 3. The 2017 session is a budget year, meaning lawmakers will craft a comprehensive plan to fund state government services for the next two years. By law, the 2017 legislative session must be completed no later than April 29. As we move into the 2017 session, I will advocate for policies that build on our recent economic successes and further strengthen our economy, State Sen. Phil Boots said. I will also work with my fellow lawmakers to improve our transportation infrastructure as we craft the next two-year budget. Main policy items we have to address this session include passing a balanced two-year state budget and crafting a road funding plan, with emphasis on the state s long-term infrastructure needs, Rep Tim Brown said. Indiana is in good economic standing, with low unemployment numbers and businesses adding jobs, and we will build upon this momentum and continue operating within our means. We ve hit the winter sports season and I have the empty Dayquil packets and half-gone Vitamin C bottle to prove it. The winter is such a unique time when it comes NEIL BURK Your Gameday Update to sports. The fall is nice and cozy. Football every Friday, volleyball throughout the week, big golf, tennis and cross country tournaments on the weekends. Spring is a different sort of chaos in its own thanks to rain, but it still isn t as odd as winter. Two of the winter sports stop for a couple weeks midway through their seasons. Girls and boys basketball both have long breaks over the holidays. All sports have some break around Christmas, but basketball is by far the most extreme. Let s look at some actual dates. Down at Southmont, the boys will play eight times between now and Dec. 17. From there, the Mounties don t play again until Jan. 6 when they act as hosts for the Sugar Creek Classic, which we at proudly sponsor. The girls are in a similar boat. They will play their 14th game on Dec. 16 before being off until Jan. 3. The other boys teams have slightly shorter breaks. Crawfordsville and North Montgomery will play their seventh and ninth games, respectively, on Dec. 21 before the time off. Don t get me wrong, this isn t new. It happens like this every year (at least the few I ve been around). It s just interesting and is an often overlooked factor into the season. However the season was going before the break, two weeks off can change a lot. A hot streak can go cold in the mundane recesses of the same old gym. Conversely, a team can find the time to heal and make adjustments thanks to being off for a couple weeks. The North Montgomery girls have the shortest break of any hoops team. They actually play in the Frankfort tournament on Dec. 23 and will play host to Southmont on Jan. 5 to kick off the new year. Crawfordsville wastes no time getting the girls season back up and running. They ll break from Dec. 21 to just Jan. 2 when they ll entertain Lafayette Central Catholic. Youthful Chargers must learn quickly By Neil Burk neil@thepaper24-7.com LINDEN Losing five seniors from a 15-8 team is what first-year head coach Eric Danforth is embracing at North Montgomery. The boys basketball squad that lost Baylee Adams, Jordan Banta, Jordan Lewis Alex Parsons and Devon Zachary to graduation will have to get experience early on. That journey begins tonight with a trip to Speedway to kick off the season. Returning lettermen for the Chargers include seniors Caleb Randolph and Ben Dugard and junior Justin Clary. Caleb and Justin have each been with the varsity since their respective freshman years, so that experience from the guard position will be a great benefit, Danforth said. We are also counting on leadership from our other seniors, Ben, Gregory Pietsch and Mitch Merica. Randolph averaged 18.4 points-per-game on his way to being named of Montgomery County s Player of the Year. Clary averaged 7.3 points and 1.2 assists as a sophomore. As for newcomers, Danforth pointed to juniors Quinton Hall and Caleb Donahue as well as freshman Kade Kobel to provide energy. None of them saw varsity action last season. (They) will be counted on to competently execute the game plan when they come onto the floor, Danforth said. The Chargers don t have a ton of height, but aren t severely undersized at any position. Clary and Randolph both stand at 6-feet in the backcourt. Pietsch and match that height at swing positions. Merica stands 6-2 in the frontcourt along with a 6-4 freshman Jack Thompson and 6-3 sophomore Connor Cain. Danforth knows that a tough schedule early on will be a barometer for his team. County rival Southmont is the third game on the schedule, slated for Dec. 2 in New Market. They shot just 29 percent from the field, including less than 10 percent from behind the arc, and found themselves trailing at the half. However, the second half was all Athenians, as they limited the Tiger Cubs to just 14 percent from the floor and outscored them to move to 1-0 with a win. We were too aggressive in our run and jump defense in the first half, and it was giving them open looks (Greencastle shot 59 percent in the first half), said head coach David Pierce. We switched to man-to-man, switching on ball screens to make sure (Collin) York was covered, and we played much better. That defensive pressure limited Greencastle s leading scorer to just 14-points, after he scored seven in the first quarter. The Mounties got a pre-thanksgiving warmup win in their home opener, against the overmatched Warriors. There was a cornucopia of points to go around as Southmont saw 10 of its players put points on the board. None found the bottom of the net more than junior sharpshooter Cam Chadd. Chadd scored 24 points before taking most of the fourth quarter off. Senior swingman Kaleb Swick also had a big night with 13 points and 12 boards. I thought we got (Chadd) where he didn t have to create everything for himself and really got some good looks, which is what we want, Southmont head coach Jon Sparks said. That led to other people getting good looks. We have a team of willing passers and when they run it s fun to watch. The Mounties made their intentions clear early on. Marlowe GREENCASTLE The Crawfordsville Lady Athenians fell victim to a swarming full court press Tuesday night, and generously served up 31 turnovers to the Lady Tiger Cubs, handing the hosts a win in the last game before Thanksgiving. The Lady Athenians committed 18 turnovers in the first half alone that led to a 10-point deficit at the first break, and a 15 point shortfall by halftime, trailing We work on it every day, said Crawfordsville head coach Tony Bean, shaking his head in disbelief. I m certain when the time comes, those shiny tights Farmers to vote on co-op merger As they wrap up their harvests, hundreds of members of a local cooperative, Westland Coop, will soon come together to explore a recommendation to merge with neighboring North Central Co-op. As shareholders in Westland, local farmers will gather Wednesday, Nov. 30 to review highlights of the year and explore the merger. According to a release, the proposal comes after nearly a year of due diligence performed by a committee of farmers and co-op leaders tasked with ensuring that such a merger would be the best decision for all members. The decision ultimately lies with the McClamroch voting members. Obviously, this is cooperative spirit in action.
