David Harrington (Good Hope) (Praise/Worship: Deacons & Men s Choir) Wed April 9th Rev. James Brown (United Fellowship) (Praise/Worship: The Ensemble & Church Choir) Purpose of Lenten Season Lent is the season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season of reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when new converts where instructed on the principles of the bible and prepared for Baptism. By observing the period of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days (Luke 4:1-13). Lent has been observed in the church since the apostolic times. Fasting is part of Lent. It is a spiritual discipline that does not involve starvation or dehydration. Many times our bodily appetites control our actions. The purpose of fasting is to make your bodily appetites your servant rather than your master. Ash Wednesday begins the Lenten period. Lent is the 40 day period before Easter Sunday. Sunday is skipped during this period. Lent begins on March 5th and ends on April 13th. In most Christian churches, the decorations are purple or blue, which are royal colors to prepare for the King.
