William Jared (born 1758, VA) came over the trail that was soon to be the Walton Road, in He died at his home on Indian Creek in His sons were Moses Jared, Samuel Jared, William Jared, Joseph Jared, and John Jared. The large Jared family inter-married with the Byrnes, Boyds, Nichols, Holladay, Ensor, Huddleston, Maddux, and Leftwich. This family prides itself on being active in community and county

4 Additional Information: William Jared 3 (William 2, John 1) Son of William and Elizabeth (Raulsten) Jared. William Jared was a Methodist Minister in the days of the Circuit Riders. Camp meetings were held by preachers traveling over wide areas to economize on time and distance. Preachers would advertise a series of meetings at certain points. Those not so religiously inclined would come for the social aspect of such a gathering. So a mere handful of preachers could distribute their services over a large area, and reach people who otherwise it would have been impossible to reach. William Jared s time was a restless period. Such movements as Spiritualism and Temperance came into existence. The wilderness parts of the nation were filling up. New opportunities arose on every front, and the nation became extremely individualistic. The church became highly emotionalized. Denominations found it hard to agree within their own congregation, let alone with other denominations. The nation was struggling to level itself into a strong Union on the heels of the Revolutionary War. Still seeds of the Civil War were germinating in the minds of certain ambitious politicians. Certainly at this point in our national history the role of the Minister was an important one. Naomi (Jared) Simmons (William 2, John 1) md. John Simmons 5 Oct As a boy John Simmons accompanied his parents to what is now Franklinton, LA. His sister Jane married Colonel James Raulston and remained in TN. When British invasion of Louisiana appeared imminent young Simmons joined the 13 th LA Militia. In the engagements near the city the British were defeated with great losses. When the emergency was over, John Simmons contacted Colonel Raulston and accompanied him back to Nashville, TN. There he met and married Colonel Raulston s niece, Naomi Jared. They later moved to Missouri when the Civil War began. He was a Southern sympathizer and it nearly cost him his life. Threatened with arrests for having served Confederate cavalry in his shop, he refused to be taken. His daughter Elizabeth seized a hoe and, holding its sharp point over the head of the Union soldier whose pistol was leveled at her father, shouted, Shoot and I will sink this hoe in your brain! This display of courage and devotion struck at the heart of the Union commander. He ordered his men out, congratulated Elizabeth, saluted and left. John Simmons died 1 Oct and was first buried near Thomasville, MO. His wife Naomi Jared died in Mountain Grove, MO, 24 Dec and was buried in the Old Cemetery. Elizabeth Jared Simmons (Lee) Upton (Naomi Jared 3, William 2, John 1). Daughter of John & Naomi (Jared) Simmons b. 30 October 1817, Putnam Co., TN; d. 30 October md. 14 March st Rev. John Bascom Lee, b. 14 March 1814, d. 4 June 1857, leaving a family of small children. md. 2 nd Rev. Perry Upton who died and was buried in Arkansas during the Civil War. They had no children. Frank A. Robinett has written about his grandmother, Elizabeth Jared (Simmons) Lee. Elizabeth was a courageous a character as her times produced. As a widow with a number of small children she lived in a newly settled area during the turbulent times leading up to the Civil War. She then married Perry Upton, a Methodist preacher. When the tides of war threatened them with starvation, the family was loaded into a covered wagon and driven to Arkansas to be near relatives. He later died there. Before leaving Missouri they hid their valuables, such as they were, in what she called a begum tree. After the war she drove home and found everything she had owned burned and stripped. She drove sixty miles through the woods to get salt for her family to use and to buy a cow, which she led home on foot. Wild fruit, berries, wild game and corn furnished the family s food. She carded her wool and wove it, and she raised and wove cotton for cloth. The family made all the clothes they wore. She used the help of her children and built a log house. Later on she made her home for thirty years with my mother, and grandma was a respected person in our household. Never do I recall my father ever showing any displeasure at having a mother-in-law permanently living in his home. She always took first place. She lived a great life and died on her birthday 89 years old. She was a devout Southern Methodist and was always seen in her place in church.

The 28 th Tennessee Infantry Regiment was surrendered and paroled at Greensboro North Carolina. Both John Jared and his brother William James Jared refused to take the oath of Allegiance in order to be paroled. They both returned to Tennessee to live out the rest of their lives. 6 ISLE OF WIGHT Co., VA, was named after the Isle of Wight in England. It was first known by the Indian name Warrosquyoake. It was later enlarged by parts of Upper Norfolk and Nansemond. According to Brodie in his Seventeenth Century, VA, history began early in Isle of Wight Co. The first colonists to Jamestown landed 26 April 1607, about 4 o clock in the afternoon. Five months later on 10 September 1607, Captain John Smith departed from Jamestown to Fort Comfort at the mouth of the James River to trade with Indians. What is now Isle of Wight Co., VA, was then inhabited by a tribe of Indians called Warrosquyoakes. They had a town on Pagan Creek and as Captain Smith approached the junction of that Creek with the James River he noticed two Indian canoes. He rowed into the mouth of the Creek and began negotiations for trading. The Indians invited him to their community on Pagan Creek where he enjoyed a lively trade and gained thirty bushels of corn with which to return to the fort at Jamestown, thus bringing the Pagan Creek Community from an area which was later known as Isle of Wight Co. into the first few communities named outside the Fort at Jamestown. One of the first Quaker communities in America was located on Pagan Creek under the leadership of William Jared. William James Jared, son of Samuel Raulston Jared and Mary Safroni Scruggs Jared, and wife Betty Huddleston Jared, daughter of Isaac Huddleston and Judith Nicholas Wallace Huddleston Robert A Huddleston and wife, Birchie (Bruce) Huddleston, who died at age 7. Robert was the son of Byram Frank Huddleston and Ruth (Jared) Huddleston. Birchie was the daughter of Alvin Byrd Bruce and Nora Tennessee (Jared) Bruce. Their only child to live to maturity was Ruth Huddleston, who married John Madros.

Martha Holladay & husband, John C. Boyd, brother of Jefferson Wiseman Boyd started to TX with their family of 7 children. They got typhoid fever and all died except 3 children. Jefferson Wiseman Boyd & the brother of Martha Holladay, Joseph Holladay, went west and brought the 3 surviving children back to Putnam Co., TN. James Alexander Boyd was one of the surviving children. James Alexander Boyd was a C.S.A. 17 DAR Patriot Index:William Jarratt, b. 3 June 1758, Hunterdon Co., NJ d. 22 September 1827, Buffalo Valley, Jackson Co., TN. Revolutionary War, soldier in VA. William Jared moved from Loudoun Co., VA 13 April 1785 with his father to Bedford Co., VA. In 1792 William was recorded among his family and friends in Bedford Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Raulston, the 22 year old daughter of Matthew Raulston of Bedford, Co., VA. William was 34 years old. To begin the exodus of the Jared family from Virginia, though the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee, William and Elizabeth (Raulston) Jared moved from Bedford Co., VA with their two oldest children, little Moses and baby Patsy, to a tract of land patented to him for his Revolutionary War Service in the year Their third child, Naoma (Simmons) and the six children following her were born in what is now Putnam Co., TN. He located on Indian Creek, about 2 miles east of Buffalo Valley, Putnam Co., TN. He received a United States land grant of almost one thousand acres. William s land was later owned by John Bell Denny and Mrs. Alice A. Jared. Robert A. Shanks brought land previously owned by John Bell Denny, s/o Jonathan Denny & Agnes Thompson. Jonathan Denny was the s/o Zachariah Denny & Catherine Stallings. John Jared was a prosperous worker in wood, making wagons, wagon wheels, spinning wheels, looms and such other implements useful to the pioneers of those days. His son William Jared married Elizabeth Roulston/Raulsten, the sister of Colonel James Raulsten of the 2 nd Division of the Tennessee Militia, in the War of Colonel Raulston s picture hangs in the State Capitol Building in Nashville, TN. The William Jared Bible is owned by Martha Ann Sanders of Buffalo Valley, TN. (Col. Raulston s picture was not in the Capitol when I visited in 2001 was told it could be in storage. Audrey Lambert.) The William Jared farm was later owned by Jonathan Denny & Agnes T. Winfree and then the land was owned by John Bell Denny their son. The land is now owned by Robert A. Prior to Matthew s death, his oldest daughter, Elizabeth, who married William Jared of Revolutionary War fame, had moved to Sumner County, (TN) which had been established in 1797 and it was in that direction that the other children moved after Matthew s death. The locations of the farms which they entered in what was then Sumner County is today near Chestnut Mound in Putnam County, (TN). Sumner County was named after Major General Jethro Sumner, who stood with the Colonial forces in North Carolina against the British General Charles Cornwallis. Matthew s other daughter Ruth, who married Mark Young, also came and settled not far away in Buffalo Valley. Some few years later William and Samuel came and settled in Sumner and Williamson counties. Moses, the remaining brother, moved to Warren County, Illinois but a year later returned with his children and grandchildren and settled in Blount and Hamilton Counties. As a boy John Simmons accompanied his parents to what is now Franklinton, LA. His sister Jane Simmons

20 married Colonel James Raulston/Roulston and remained in Tennessee. When British invasion of Louisiana appeared imminent young Simmons joined the 13 th LA Militia. In the engagements near the city the British were defeated with great losses. When the emergency was over, John Simmons contacted Colonel Raulston and accompanied him back to Nashville, Tennessee. There he met and married Colonel Raulston s niece, Naomi Jared. They later moved to Missouri when the Civil War began. He was a Southern sympathizer and it nearly cost him his life. Threatened with arrests for having served Confederate cavalry in his shop, he refused to be taken. His daughter Elizabeth seized a hoe and, holding its sharp point over the head of the Union soldier whose pistol was leveled at her father, shouted, Shoot and I will sink this hoe in your brain! This display of courage and devotion struck at the heart of the Union commander. He ordered his men out, congratulated Elizabeth, saluted and left. John Simmons died 1 October 1868 and was first buried near Thomasville, MO. His wife Naomi Jared died in Mountain Grove, MO, 24 December 1876 and was buried in the Old Cemetery. In her first book she talks about William Jared and his service in the Revolutionary War along with his father, John Jared s service during the war. At this time in history there were two men by the name of William Jarret & William Jarrard. The one named William Jarret is the one that the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) claims is William Jared, s/o John Jared & Hannah Whitacre. This person is credited with being a soldier in the Loudoun Militia, E. of VA. The other person William Jarrard is credited with being a Captain of the Berkley Militia, E. of VA. Audrey J. (Denny) Lambert was accepted as by the NSDAR on 2 July 2002, her ancestor being William Jarret her National Number: , Stoney Creek Chapter, Rochester, MI. In 2005 she started a quest of documenting the William Jared Cemetery near Buffalo Valley in the 11 th Civil Dist. of Putnam Co., TN. The area was once in Jackson Co., TN before Putnam Co. was formed. The cemetery is the resting place of William Jared, s/o John Jared and Hannah Whitacre. This cemetery has been fenced to keep the cattle from destroying the remaining tombstones and to preserve the area of the cemetery. As of 2006 Audrey J. Lambert is working on a project to have a official DAR marker installed to honor the Revolutionary service of William Jared. The surname of Jared has been spelled many different ways throughout this families history. The DAR has decided that the spelling should be William Jarratt so this is what will be inscribed on his DAR marker. The DAR genealogists in Washington D.C. have researched William Jarratt to make sure he is the one to be credited with this marker. This is a letter I received from them and the proof they came up with. Much of this proof was submitted at the time that Audrey J. Lambert became a member of the DAR and was submitting documentation for a Revolutionary grave marker but there was some confusion on the service and birth location for the William Jared buried in the William Jared cemetery which was originally called the old Jared-Byrne Cemetery in Putnam Co., TN. In 2004, documentation was found to prove that the William Jarratt in question served as a soldier from Loudoun County, VA and that it was another man that served as Captain from Berkley County, VA. Documentation was also found to prove his birth location as Kingwood,

21 probably Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and his residence between 1775 and 1783 as Loudoun County, VA. The Office of the Historian General have spent a good deal of time verifying the information for William Jarratt to make sure that accurate information was attributed to the correct man. She told them that her ancestors came from Pennsylvania and were among the earliest Quaker settlers of Bucks County. She had met John and married him in Pennsylvania 8 August 1757, the year her father s family moved from Falls Monthly Meeting, Pennsylvania, to Kingston Monthly Meeting in New Jersey. She had joined her parents in New Jersey for a time before bringing her two small sons and settling in this wilderness country with John. Already this Piedmont bench in Virginia was so thickly populated a Monthly Meeting of the Quakers was established just a few miles to the east in Fairfax County. Her parents were coming from Kingston, New Jersey to join the Fairfax congregation and live near their only daughter. He was also a blacksmith, farmer and cabinet maker. Mrs. Rome Peevey, age 87 (1961) is his only living child. She recalls that her father came to Alma, AR when she was five years old. They camped under a tree and put boards and a tent around the tree to protect them until Rev. Simmons could build a log cabin. How the children enjoyed living there! Mrs. Peevey can remember when the first train came to their community in AR. She also remembered that they put strings across the fireplace, after they moved into their cabin, to hang the diapers on on stormy days. Mrs. Mattie L. Watts, age 75 years, 8 months and 20 days, was born April 10 th, She was born at Bainsboro, Tennessee; converted to the Christian religion at the age of twelve years, and joined the Methodist Church, of which she was a loyal member and a faithful worker until affection of paralysis rendered her a cripple in All of her children were at her bedside in the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. L. Chem of Blackwell, to shower upon her their love and give her all the tender care in their power. Note: Bainsboro/Gainsboro, TN is a mistake Mattie Leah (Byrne) Watts was born near Granville, TN. Many friends of the Chem family were exceedingly kind and helpful. Rev. L. N. Lipscomb of Sweetwater preached Mrs. Watts funeral. He was better able and more fitted for the occasion since Mrs. Watts mothered him and his wife before he became a preacher. He loved her and he has her wonderful inspiration to strive to impart to others. Thus will the gems of her life be scattered on and on and on. Rev. Lipscomb is only one who had the rare privilege of coming in direct contact with Mother Watts. Many others can testify to the radiance of her life of light and love. Rev. Van Zandt, Methodist pastor of Blackwell, offered some thoughts at the service which were held in the Methodist Church of Blackwell. The interment was in the Blackwell cemetery. To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone and in that stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. (Rev. 2-17, which is the text that Rev. Lipscomb based his remarks upon. Mother Watts loved that part of the scriptures. Mrs. Watts is survived by her husband, J. B. Watts, age 80, and by one sister and three brothers. The sister and two brothers live in Tennessee and the other brother in the state of Oregon. She is also survived by five children and has two dead. The five children are: Walter Watts of Fort Worth; Will Watts of Abilene: Mrs. Dee Lauless of Goree; Mrs. H. C. McKee of El Paso, having visited Mrs. Chem only two weeks before her death. Other relatives are: A niece, Mrs. Mattie Wren of Big Spring, and Mrs. Margaret Watts of Snyder and children, who attended the funeral. The Watts family are well known here, having lived a number of years near Snyder. For the past few years they have been living at El Paso.

On May 1st, Mrs. Rhoda Young died at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah, form a complication of diseases incident to old age. Mrs. Young was born and reared in the lower end of Putnam county, being a daughter of Moses Jared, Sr., one of the earliest and most prominent settlers of this section of the State. She married Adolphus Young, who was a brother of the late Peter Young, Esq., of the 11th district. About fifty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Young moved to Utah where they lived the remainder of their lives and reared a large and interesting family, one of their sons being a member of the State Senate of Utah, and another son has served several terms as Mayor of Salt Lake City. Mrs. Young leaves two sisters in this county, Mrs. David Nichols and Mrs. J. W. Boyd, both of whom reside in the 11th district, while M. A. Jared, her only brother, removed from this county to Missouri a years ago. Mrs. Young leaves several relatives in Cookeville, she begin an aunt of A. W. and J. J. Boyd, B. B. Jared, C. Y.
