2 Birth and Early Years Mary, Joseph, and the Roman Census The expectant Mary and Joseph travel from their home in Nazareth to Bethlehem for the census Jesus Birth Jesus is born in Bethlehem The Jews had received prophecies about Jesus birth, but they did not recognize him as God s Messiah Those who did recognize Jesus as God s Messiah included common shepherds and non-jewish wise men
