1 Courier Weaverville UMC The Art of Being April, 2018 Proverbs 16: 25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death. As I ponder the art of being, I am led to one conclusion. In the end, there are two ways of living for self or for God. We have no idea what tomorrow brings. We have no idea whether we ll be alive to seek God or not tomorrow. There is no other choice: the end is either life in God, or death. Is Jesus enough? What matters at the end is the end itself. It doesn t matter if the road is paved with gold, lined with beautiful flower beds or if it leads to a death trap. It doesn t matter if the way of life is filled with comfort or a sense of security if it doesn t lead to God in the end. The question to ask is whether the way I am going is taking me closer to God, or away from God. Lent is a good time for selfreflection. The art of being involves doing some soul searching and house cleaning. To live with the end in mind, I need to know what end I m seeking. I need to be clear where I want to go. I need to check constantly to see that I m going in the right direction. I need to be disciplined enough to check, make constant corrections to get back on track, and to seek help from others to make sure I m going the right way. By doing these things, I m keeping the end in focus. If the end is life in God, and to be with God once I m done on earth, then I need to check that I am going towards God. Our roadmap is the Bible I need the Bible in my life to keep me with God. I can ask my peers and leaders to help me assess how I m living and see where I need to grow, what I need to work on, what sins to fight, and what areas to grow in. This is the art of becoming who God has created each of us to be. Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for running the race and setting the perfect example for us. Thank you for your Holy Spirit living in us, teaching me and guiding me in living for God. Help me to stay on the straight path, never straying into shortcuts or dead ends. Let me enter into your rest and peace today so I can see you at the finish line. Amen Pastor Roger

2 Our next M&M lunch will be Thursday, April 19th, at 12 noon in the fellowship center. Carole Pennell will be serving a delicious lasagna dinner. The cost is only $5.00. Our guest speakers will be Lorraine and Bob Cipriano. Their program will be "Spirit, Mind and Body: Tips For Healthier Living as we age." Feel free to call Joy Pansiera, , or Mary Beth Horrell, , for more information In March, the Grace Waugh Circle members were disappointed that the monthly meeting had to be cancelled due, yet again, to the weather. However, three circle members along with Joanie Strohm were delighted to attend the Annual Blue Ridge District UMW Prayer Breakfast, held this year in Forest City, NC on March 17. Mary Shaw, Patricia Frazier and Cynthia Lewis were up early to get there, and enjoyed a wonderful breakfast with over one hundred other UMW members from miles around. The service followed in the Forest City UMW Church with updates on all things UMW, special music, and a great speaker. Next year's breakfast is to be on March 15, so ladies, make it the first thing you put in your 2019 calendar. All ladies are invited to our April Grace Waugh Circle meeting on Thursday April 12 at a.m. in the Conference Room in the WUMC Fellowship Hall. Our speaker at this meeting it to be Maureen Carr. Maureen is a former President of the Blue Ridge District and currently serves on the District Nominating Committee. She is a parish nurse at Central UMC here in Asheville and has a wealth of knowledge about United Methodist Women. 3 The Smoky Mountain Brass Band is a British-style brass band located in Asheville, NC. We were formed in April, 1981, by Western Carolina University music professor, Richard Trevarthen, and a small cadre of the finest brass players in Western North Carolina. Since then we have performed in and around Western North Carolina, the Southeast and the nation. 4 Children s Sunday School Teachers We are still in need of Children s Sunday School teachers for the months of May and June. The curriculum is all ready for you!! Our April teachers are, Ericka Witcher, Phyllis Stowe, and Julie Williamson. Thank you in advance for all of your dedication to the kiddos and our church!!! B E A C O N On April 15th, the on-line volunteer registration will be opened for VBS crew leaders and other important VBS volunteer positions. The link will be through our church website, weavervilleumc.org. The excitement is building! Thank you in advance for volunteering! Heather Weaver and Emily Clark are the contacts for Vacation Bible School Also, on April 15th, our children will have music practice during the Sunday school hour. Mark your calendars for April 22nd! Our children will be leading the 11am service that Sunday which will be outstanding! Afterwards, we will head across the street to our fellowship center for a delicious meal of spaghetti sponsored by the men of the Ignite Sunday School Class! Thank you, gents! B E A C O N Meet Beacon! We will get to know Beacon on day 2 of VBS this summer! From June 25th to the 29th, kids will be shipwrecked and learn how God is our rescuer and strength. 5 Memorial Plaque As you may know, we have a memorial plaque board on the south side of the fellowship center at the Celebration Garden with 84 plaques having been carefully worded and placed there to honor and memorialize numerous people and occasions in our church. We now have a second board up and already two plaques to get it started. If you would like to purchase a plaque, the cost is $175 and the money will go into the building and grounds renovation fund. Our big project now from that fund is renovating the 3rd floor bathrooms which are long overdue. Paul Kline will do this for $8,900. We have already raised $1,780+ from folks sending in checks with bathroom fund on them. Thank you! Let s raise the rest of the money now and get Paul to finish these this Spring so we can move on to another worthwhile project to keep improving our beautiful church! Les Love Automatic Defibrillator Did you know we have an Automatic Emergency Defibrillator (AED) in our main church building? It is located at the head of the stairs across from the restrooms on the 2nd floor of the education building. These devices are designed for anyone to use in the event of a cardiac arrest emergency. You don t have to be trained to use one! The device talks you through the charging process, paddle placement and activation. We will also be positioning one in the fellowship center in the near future. Welcome New Members! Please welcome Patricia and Jim Frazier to our church family! They relocated to North Carolina from Saratoga Springs, NY in 2015 and live off of New Stock Road with their dog, Buddy. Patricia is originally from Chicago and Jim grew up in Kentucky and Oklahoma. Patricia has two sons in Saratoga Springs and a daughter living near Boston. Jim s daughter lives in Washington State. Patricia is a retired first-grade teacher and Jim worked as a military and civilian pilot and later a computer systems analyst. Patricia and Jim stay busy discovering WNC, reading, music and connecting with friends and family. They are excited about getting acquainted with our church members! We are one month away from our support for the Kairos Ministry at Craggy Correctional Facility. There are still opportunities to get involved. Our UMM and UMW will be preparing meals and we have several individuals who will be part of the ministry team. We will also be asking our members to sign up for the 24 hour prayer wheel. The team was very appreciative of our support last time. Let's make this one even better. If you want to get involved, contact Don Mallicoat, , donsoutdoor@gmail.com. Our church was approached by the Buncombe County Board of Elections to use our fellowship center as a voting location to replace the one at Woodlands Hill Church. After investigation and discussion by the Board of Trustees we signed an agreement to do so. Since this location is out of precinct we did ask them to look for a long term location within the precinct. During the 2018 election cycle we will be serving as a voting location so expect some traffic around the fellowship center on voting days, the first being the Primary on May 8th.
