1 May 2017 Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world! Do Angels Have Wings? Slowly working our way through the book of Daniel at our Tuesday communion services, we d just reached the chapters where the angel Gabriel visits Daniel. So, as a warm up, I asked if anyone had an angel story they were willing to share. We had several great stories, but this one prompted me to ask Jane if she might write it up. She did, and here it is. Pastor Gary I was sitting in my garden pulling weeds one day when I felt something flop onto my right shoulder. Startled, I turned my head to see what it was and found myself face to face with a mourning dove who looked as if landing on a person was nothing out of the ordinary. After a few moments, he jumped to the ground but stayed close-by while I continued weeding. I wondered if I could get him to eat some birdseed out of my hand, so I went to the garage and got a handful. I was still in the garage when I saw him casually walk up our long driveway and into the garage, whereupon he flew up to my hand, bit my fingertips a few times (just to show his authority) and then gobbled up the seed before flying away. The next day, I was outside and there were several mourning doves under my bird feeder cleaning up the fallen seeds. Doves are ground feeders. One of them turned when he saw me and immediately walked over, and flew up to my arm as if to say, How about another handful of the good stuff? I obliged him. For several days, our dove friend stayed around, often following us like a puppy when either my husband Richard or I worked in the yard. We could usually find him under the bird feeder with several of his Dove-Buds, but he would always leave them to come check out what we were doing and to get a handful of the good stuff. We kept some in our pocket just in case. At the time, we were having some landscaping done, and I cautioned the workers not to be alarmed if a dove showed up to join them for lunch. The foreman was quite excited over this prospect and mentioned that a dove was a sign of God. Well, our dove friend didn t disappoint. The workmen said the bird crawled right onto the open lunch pail and helped himself. Okay, great. Now I ll have to start serving his birdseed on rye bread! Then, for some time we didn t see our dove. We had enjoyed the time we had with him and hoped he had not met with some kind of fate, but probably had just moved on maybe found a girl friend or something. I googled mourning dove on the internet and found that the dove is a symbol of life, hope, renewal and peace. (And, yes I watched the TV show Touched by an Angel ) My husband Richard suffered from diabetes and heart disease, and unfortunately, one night it all caught up with him. He passed away on the 2nd of June, My family all came home and one afternoon before the funeral my younger sister was outside talking on her cell phone to her spouse in Colorado. They talked for a loooong time. When she finally came in she said, You won t believe this, but the whole time I was talking to Jim there was a dove sitting on my lap. It was the last time we saw our Dove. ~ Jane Sullivan Jayne Benckendorf s Easter doodling's; it helps her focus During the Sermon.

2 2017 ~ Matthew s Account of Jesus With March, we began a short trip through the Gospel of Matthew that will take us through June. Here s what s up for May! May 7 Key Moments (Matthew 14) This chapter takes our breath away. Key moments? How about the death of John the Baptist? How about the Feeding of the Five Thousand? How about Jesus walking on water? May 14 A Woman of Great Faith (Matthew 15) We learn much in Matthew 15, but the passage we ll examine the most closely is Matthew 15:21-29, and the woman to whom Jesus said, Great is your faith? Can we have her kind of faith? May 21 Confession (Matthew 16) The word, confession, isn t exclusively connected with the confession of sin; confession implies verbal agreement, and also applies to our confession of faith! At the heart of this chapter, Peter makes his great confession of faith, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God! May 28 Highs and Lows (Matthew 17-18) A high: atop the Mount of Transfiguration. A low: the inability of the disciples to heal a demonpossessed boy. A high: Jesus heals him! A low: Jesus predicts his death. A high: tax payment provided through fishing. A low: the disciples continual concern about who s the greatest? What does God teach us through our highs and lows? May the Lord bless and teach us through Matthew s Gospel! Could I Be More Grateful? by Pastor Gary The short answer: I can t imagine how. Maybe it was our Lenten Daniel Fast, (Thank you, Pastor Lori!) or it being my last Holy Week here, but Palm Sunday through Easter formed one of the most meaningful weeks I ve ever experienced. And though I ve thanked the Lord a lot, I wanted to risk thanking you. It s a risk, because I will surely leave someone out! Thanks to our lay speakers for each early prayer service of Holy Week, for the Noon service on Good Friday, and to Eric and those who helped him at the Sunrise Service! Thanks, Ackermans, for hosting! All week long, you speakers were amazing, challenging and powerful! Several times, you reduced me to tears (the good kind!), and more than once, I thought to myself: I d be happy to attend a church where you were the preacher! Thanks to our amazing cooking and clean-up teams for the Seder Meal on Maundy Thursday; thanks to Norma and the Worship Committee for their decorations! Thanks to Jayne Benckendorf and to those clean-up after Cross Connections every week! Thanks for flowers, Easter egg helpers, greeters, ushers, hospitality folks, and JoAnn, who patiently and persistently calls and arranges them! Thanks to Shelli, the office workers, and the bulletin stuffers, and for all their extra work this season. Thanks to Nick, Cliff and Alex, the media team on one side; and Steve, Doug, Dave, Kerry and Will, on the other. Thanks to Russ for all the extra set-up. Thanks to all our gracious musicians for leading us closer to Christ, including Amy, the Choir, 7 People Singing, Kerry, the Worship Band, the Bells, the trumpets, the French horn, the children s choir, the chimers, the cherubs (and all their parents); Bob Behle, Rev. Al, and Max Sullivan for the Sunrise Service, and all our keyboardists: Pat, Judy, Linda, Kerry and Jane, pushed through pain to help us out on Easter! What joy! What fun! And thanks to my incredible and wonderful wife, Becky, who week after week and more so during a holiday week has provided PowerPoints for most services. And one more thing, thanks to everyone who attended any of our Holy Week Celebrations: You made the week glorious! who Pastor Gary s LAST SUNDAY Is June 11. The Communications Team includes Cathy Bowen, James Benckendorf and Dave Jones. If you have topics you would like to see in the update, please feel free to contact any team member or any member of the Building Committee. As you know, we have been working on an issue regarding the flood plain around our church and its impact on the placement of any future additions to our current building. Flood Plain Study Update At our March 20th meeting, Caius Jennison from Farnsworth Group presented maps showing the proposed change to the FEMA Flood Plain Area. The revised map shows that all but the northwest corner of our property will not be in the flood plain. The new map must be approved by the Village of Morton and by FEMA. We expect approval approximately days after the map is submitted to FEMA. Our next step is to work with Farnsworth Group on design drawings. The plan at this point is to have preliminary drawings on display at the church to offer an opportunity for all of you to see the progress of the project. Our district has collected 800+ phones which are then wiped, re-programmed and given to at-risk families for emergency use. MUMC has donated around 25 unused cell phones so keep them coming! BOOK NOOK UMW Book news from Linda Clauser I d to introduce myself, in case you don t already know me. My name is Linda Clauser, and I am the new Program Resource Chairperson for United Methodist Women. My husband, Mel, and I moved to Morton from Delavan almost four years ago. I was involved with the UMW books at the Delavan church and currently work part-time at the public library in Delavan. There are 13 new books on the UMW book shelf in the church library, located just off the sanctuary in the Education pod. I hope you will take an opportunity to read the books you are interested in. You don t have to enroll in the United Methodist Women Reading Program to read our books. If you have any questions about the UMW Reading Program, or any of our books, please contact me at : linda.clauser@gmail.com phone "My grace is sufficient for thee." 2 Corinthians 12:9 ENCOURAGING WORDS FROM OUR PRESIDENT Many of us have a favorite Christian verse or word that we carry with us. One of my friends has the word joy displayed in various places in her home. Another has the word peace displayed. My word is grace. Many people think it is because my first grandchild is named Grace, but it is really because I am so grateful for the grace Jesus offered me all those years ago. We receive the riches of God s love and forgiveness because Christ gave his life on the cross. We are saved through grace, Jesus ultimate sacrifice for each of us. I believe we are to serve and forgive others so they know what the grace of Jesus Christ is really about. I don t think we actually offer grace to others; we are able to offer forgiveness because we live under the grace Jesus provided for us at the cross. As we serve others through the ministry of United Methodist Women, it is important to remember that we are the examples of what God s grace has meant in our own lives. Share your knowledge of the power of grace in your life; they just might be the right words at the right time. In Christ, Cathy

8 Thoughts During spring break, 15 of us went to see The Case for Christ at the movie theater. As I watched, I just kept thinking about all the people who have come to Christ, at least in part, through the witness of Lee Strobel (the author and subject).and how that all started with his spouse coming to faith, staying strong in her witness despite his frustration, mockery, and emotional abuse, and praying relentlessly for him. Without someone in Lee s life who loved Jesus enough to not back down in her faith or witness and loved Lee enough to pray and endure, Lee doesn t come to know Jesus. If he doesn t come to know Jesus, there are at least thousands of lives that would be worse off for it. We cannot predict what the Holy Spirit will do in a person s heart nor can we predict what the Holy Spirit will do through a person who comes to faith maybe a little but maybe A LOT. We can, however, stand up for and in our faith despite any opposition. We can persist and endure in prayer. We can share our faith with those around us. We can live for Jesus and let everyone see it. Towards the end of the story, Lee says, Okay, God, you win. Boy, did He ever. I pray that He ll win in our lives each and every day. Confirmation Congratulations to our newest church members: Bailey Brown, Justin Hart, Connor Loudermilk, John Pfeifer, Maggie Sullivan, and Morgan Wiegardt!
