Staying focused on Him can be summed up in these there words...love, Worship and Serve! We will revisit these visioning concepts that keep us Jesus centered as the new year unfolds. We will explore how loving the Lord with everything we have is pivotal in maintaining our spiritual vibrancy. We will learn how worship, both public and private, needs to be truth based and truth led. And it is interesting that Jesus said that His Father is looking for people who will worship Him in spirit and truth. Lastly, we will grasp how serving the Lord always results in service to others. Since Jesus came not to be served, but to serve, we need to take advantage of every opportunity we have to serve others and to share the good news of Jesus with people. Medical Ministry - Cervical Cancer Cervical cancer affects many women and chances of acquiring this in women can certainly be lowered by closely paying attention to staying health minded and awareness of the known risk factors. In 2010, an estimated 12,200 women in the United States will be diagnosed with cervical cancer, and an estimated 4,210 will die of the disease, and these numbers are improving with proper care. Cancers begin when the structure of the body s cells change and grow out of control. Cervical cancer starts in the lining of the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus (womb). Risk factors include a virus called HPV (human papillomavirus) that commonly causes skin/mucous membrane warts. Certain types can cause cervical cancer. Other causes include smoking, a weak immune system, low fiber diets, long term oral contraceptives, familial history and several others. Prevention includes seeing your Dr. for preventive gynecological screenings, seeking medical attention if you or your child have any warts that cause pain or embarrassment, getting the routine HPV vaccinations series and maintaining a healthy/safe and mindful lifestyle. Financial issues can play a part in staying healthy and getting the proper medical care needed, but many states ensure that pap screenings are covered. Also staying in the know in learning about this cancer, as well we educating ourselves and our loved ones, can help reduce this serious disease. 5 Building Fund November 2018 Ending cash and money market accounts : $2,436, We would like to update everyone on the new addition project. It is truly exciting to finally see some activity. Currently we are pouring footings for the building when weather permits. The building pad is in place and will sit through the winter. The contractor will try to block in the 2 storm shelters and put the concrete top on the shelters. At this point the weather will become an issue. The contractor will most likely button up the job site until warmer weather in the spring. If you have any questions please feel free to ask anyone on the building committee. Thanks to all and have a blessed holiday season, Mike and Steve Boy Scout Troop 178 Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction Saturday, January 19, to 8 p.m. Advance tickets: Adults $7, Children and Seniors $5, Family of five or more $25. 9 MUMCYouth Thoughts You know those movies that were so popular in the 80s and 90s where the storyline would go something like this: nerdy outcast teenager, for some reason, suddenly gets taken in by the coolest guy or girl around (maybe because of a bet, or because of being blackmailed, or because the nerdy kid created the cool person in a science experiment)? Then all the other teens in the popular crowd who didn t like or maybe outright picked on the nerdy outcast are abruptly put into a state of confusion because a leader in their group has brought a known outsider into the fold. At first, they don t like it and they act awkward and uncomfortable but then, after some time, they start to get to know the nerdy outcast and even begin to accept and respect him/her. Eventually, they genuinely like and appreciate the new person (and then, typically, the rest of the movie centers on the new identity crisis the nerdy outcast has to work through). I was reminded of this pattern recently and it got me thinking about how this shift within the popular group could be motivated. The best answer I could come up with is that what they were seeking changed. Before, they just knew they didn t like the outcast and they looked at him/her seeking reasons to justify their distaste. When the coolest kid in their group suddenly starts bringing the outcast around while displaying clear affection for the outcast, the other kids start to wonder what it is about this person that could possibly attract the positive attention of their leader. From that moment, they begin seeking reasons to justify this outcast being respected, honored, welcomed, and loved. What is it about this person that is lovable? We all have different personalities and different reasons we dislike certain people. But whenever someone new gets put in your path, you can be sure that our leader (Jesus Christ) ADORES them. So, what should we be seeking? Matt 19:13-15, Lk 7:36-50, Jn 4:1-41, Mk 2:13-17, 5:1-20, Sub and Chili Orders The order forms for the Sub and Chili Sale will be running as inserts in the bulletin on January 6 and 13 and then will be available at the front desk. Please get those orders in and help support the Youth, especially those who are looking to build up as much Youth Money as they can for an overseas (and more expensive) mission trip come June. Those who help put together the food will earn a portion of the proceeds from the sale. There will also be baked goods available to purchase on a first-come-first-serve basis. Youth Group Re-start On January 9, when Youth Group and WATCH activities start back up, the youth will be kicking off a fun night off site! This is an easy way to invite and bring in friends as we go off-site for a night focused on just having fun. On January 16, we will be having our mission trip reveal meeting. At the beginning of youth group, I will reveal where we are going for the Sr. High mission trip and give information on why we are going there, who we are partnering with, what we will be doing while we are there, and answering all the questions I can regarding details. All the parents are encouraged to join us for that portion of our time together as is anyone else who is interested. We are always in need of loving adults willing to help grow our youth in the mission of Christ. Service Saturdays In December, a group of us went and served at Gateway at River City. This is an assisted living facility for those with physical disabilities. More than anything else we could have done for them, they wanted a game day and just a chance for the residents to hang out, have fun, and interact with the kids. Our youth did a fantastic job of being intentional in interacting with the residents and remembering to put the residents first in the activities and the conversations. Everyone involved had a really nice time and the games we introduced to them went really well so much fun and such a blessing. On January 12, we will be going back to Loaves and Fish to serve food to the homeless and those in need. Please let me know if you would like to join us.
