1 THE WASP Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas Friday, April 20, 1906 An Explanation That the friends of Mr. Wm. Lowrey may understand the situation and the reason he was not appointed road overseer of Denton township, I make this explanation. Mr. J.A. Singleterry the overseer appointed for this township last fall resigned. I asked him to recommend a man for appointment in his place and he recommended Mr. Lowrey. I made up my mind to appoint him and told Mr. Lowrey so. Afterwards, before I made the appointment Mr. Singleterry and two or three other citizens of this township came to me and assured me that Mr. B.L. Walker was a first class road man and that he would be more satisfactory to a majority of the people of the township than Mr. Lowrey. It was my purpose, as it always has been to do the best I could for the roads of that township, and for that reason I changed my mind and appointed Mr. Walker. I hope neither the people of the township or I will be disappointed in his desire or ability to make good roads in that township. Yours truly, H.N. Smith, County Judge Reward For Blind Tigers The W.C.T.U. has money in the Bank of Waldron raised for the purpose, and offers a reward of $25.00 for the conviction of each person engaged in the sale of intoxicating liquor in Waldron, and $10.00 for each subsequent conviction of the same person. Mrs. A.G. Leming, President Abbott,, April 15, Editor Wasp:--The primary election is over and the nominees have been named. I have been asked by several of my friends what I will do should the republican party place the Hon. J.M. Hough in the political field as a candidate for representative. The only and all important answer I can give to this question is this: That I am a true democrat and a strong believer in my parties principles and that I have no control over the republican party; that they have a perfect right to place any man in the political field they see proper for any office within the gift of the people; that if Mr. Hough should become a candidate that I concede the fact that he will get several democratic votes and in return I will get as many republican votes. I honestly believe I will be elected for this is no time to vindicate a man or men. A large majority of the people want a man in the legislature that can and will do something for them. Now the great question is: Who is Jack Hough? Who is Sam Simpson? And who is Bill Faulkner? And who in Scott county remembers what happened just five years ago tonight (April 15) this same Sam Simpson who was then Scott county's representative defeated the money power of the Choctaw railroad company, and the money power of Logan county in their effort to cut off 23 square miles of the grand old county of Scott and give it to Logan county. Simpson was defeated when he asked for a second term and by a much smoother man than Jack Hough or Bill Faulkner and he lost 53 square miles of Scott county territory to Logan county, including two hundred and one thousand dollars worth of taxable property. Gentlemen, I ask in all candor who is Hough, Faulkner and Simpson? I ask you to lay aside all prejudice that you may hold against either of us and vote for the man best qualified to fill this all important office. I shall make a friendly manly fight for this office during the month of August and chal-
2 lenge all opposing candidates to meet me on the stump. I am proud of the stand I have taken to bring about honest elections in Scott county. Yours for honest men in office, Sam W.
