2 HUSBAND - 20 May 1748 Amelia Co., VA. was born in Charlotte Co., VA, which did not yet exist. Most likely he was in a part of Amelia Co., which became Charlotte Co. Parents: William Russell (c1710 Ireland - bef 1 Sep 1788 Charlotte Co., VA) and Mary, widow of a Mr. Cannon (c1715 perhaps VA - bef 26 Sep 1774 Charlotte Co., VA)., SC & VA line in "Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pensions," Vol. 13, by Virgil D. The original handwritten document that served under Captain Walton of Virginia, Virginia Militia, under the command of Colonel Wofferd. He served a second tour of duty under Captain Grant of South Carolina as Orderly Sergeant in a militia commanded by Gen. Williamson. He stated, "My father was a Native of Virginia Charlot County." A second tour of duty was served under Captain Grant of South Carolina as Orderly Sergeant in a militia commanded by Gen. Williamson. From the rejected claim of David B. Russell, above Charlotte Co., VA. William Russell was taxed for 6 whites and 8 black slaves. Edward Russell was taxed for 5 whites and 18 blacks. was taxed for 6 whites and 2 blacks. His household may have included his stepmother and her four children. Note that only one tither was noted in the 1787 tax list for American Revolutionary War ended. The discrepancy between list of 1782 and 1787 for James is unclear. Perhaps his mother and siblings were with him in c1787/1790 Virginia or perhaps South Carolina married an unknown woman. He may have been married more than once. 19 Dec 1788 Charlotte Co., VA. Thomas Spencer, Jr., and Quin Morton made further division of the estate of William Russell, deceased: one third to the relict Anne Russell; other two thirds remainder of the estate to the deceased s eight children: Edward, Joseph, JAMES, Mary, John, Thomas, Nancy, Peggy, and to John Russell, the representative of the deceased s son William Russell, Jr. Recorded 07 Apr Charlotte Co. NOTE: I think, but cannot prove, that this is the same man in Charlotte Co., VA. There also was a census listing for (1-1-4) on p This may have been a relative or it may have been the same household enumerated twice but with a change in the composition of females between census taker visits. 20 Apr 1790 Greenville Co., SC. Son, David Bailey Russell, born to James and unknown. might have been in Greenville Co., SC. at this time. 1794/1805 went to Kentucky Christian Co., KY, was formed. Was here then? 1800 Livingston Co., KY. James Russel in tax record. This may be the correct. Livingston County was created 13 December 1798 from Christian County Charlotte Co., VA. is not on the tax list, p. 17. Anne, William/son of Edward, and Edward are. c1805 Jan 1804 Kentucky. Daughter, Mary Ann, born to James and unknown. Charlotte Co., VA. Mary (Russell) Daniel vs. John Russell etc., Thomas Russell. William Russell, deceased, had two wives. By the first he had 5 children: Edward, William, Joseph, James, & Mary (Russell) Daniel. By the second wife, Anne, he had Thomas, John, Nancy, & Peggy. According to William Russell, Sr. s will the estate went to Anne and her children. Mary Daniel alleges that this is not the correct will. In May 1803 Mary Daniel s husband, Thomas Daniel, died. William Russell, Jr., is dead. He left only one son, John. In addition, children by the second marriage are dead: John (who had no wife or children), Nancy (who married John Hatchett & had one son, William). Mary Daniel asks that her stepmother, the children of the second marriage, John Hatchett, and William Hatchett be defendants, and she asks for a trial by jury. She wants to know what they received from the estate. (Other names mentioned: Thomas A. Stephenson, Jacob Morton.) 17 Jan 1804: The sheriff of Charlotte Co. summoned Edward Russell, Joseph Russell, James Russell, John son of William Jr. deceased, Thomas Russell, Peggy Russell, Anne Russell the widow, John Hatchett & his son William Hatchett, all to appear in Chancery at the Court House, to testify 1 Mar 1804, with 100 fines each should they not appear. He had remarried in 1867 to Laney Richards, so I put Mary s dod between Jesse and Laney had one known child, Roxey A. Martin b. abt. 1869, according to this census. There are two additional children on this census Manda E., age 8, and John A., age 5. It is unlikely these children belong to Laney since she and Jesse didn t marry until If they belong to Mary, there is a very long gap between theirs and Jesse N. s birth. I m not sure if Jesse had an additional marriage between Mary and Laney, or if these children belonged to Mary, or if he and Laney had an early family before they married. Or perhaps this isn t even the right Jesse Martin and it was a different one who married Laney Richards. These are the things which make me say, Hmmm. Any ideas? 6.
