Our scheduled speaker was unable to attend. Mr. Vance Sales graciously filled in and presented a program about the painting of George Washington Crossing the Delaware. Thank you so much for this interesting program. EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING: The Executive Board Meeting for June was held on June 10, Unfortunately, we did not have a quorum so we were unable to take care of any business. The Executive Board Meeting for July will be July 8, JUNE MEETING: The June Meeting will be held on Sunday, June 25, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Round Room at the Jonesboro Library. Remember that the meeting has been moved a week due to Father s Day. Enjoy that day with your family. Our speaker will be Gerald Angel. His topic is the Civil War in SE Missouri & NE Arkansas ending in Pilot Knob HANDSHAKES: Handshaking has a long and "shaky" history. Scholars say the first shake on record occurred after the Battle of Hastings in Then warriors grasped each other's forearms as a gesture of peace and to check for weapons. In the 16th and 17th centuries and in the beginnings of the 18th century the handshake was not used as a greeting. It served to seal the peace between two parties or as a contract for closing business deals. Even a warring husband and wife would settle their dispute with a handshake. The Quakers are believed to be the first to popularize the handshake as a greeting. A group known for its rejection of worldly vanity, the Quakers favored the egalitarian (promoting equality) handshake to grander gestures of the day such as bowing, hand kissing and sweeping one's hat. 1

4 Genealogy Night Sponsored by the Jonesboro Public Library July 27, :30 pm until Midnight Pot Luck (Finger Foods) Unlimited Ancestry.com Access to Genealogy Materials All Genealogists Welcome Family Tree I think that I shall never see, The finish of a family tree, As it forever seems to grow, From roots that started long ago. Way back in ancient history times, In foreign land and distant climes, From them grew trunk and branching limbs, That dated back to times so dim. One seldom knows exactly when, The parents met and married then, Nor when the twigs began to grow, With odd named children row on row. Though verse like this is made by me, The end's in sight as you can see, Tis not the same with family trees, That grow and grow thru centuries! author unknown 4
