4 INTRODUCTION by Steve Selbrede. I can t take much credit for this document. Much if it was compiled by my uncles, especially Wil and Bob Selbrede, who were avid Selbrede genealogists during the 1980s and 1990s (if not earlier). They have both passed away now, so I can t always credit each documents to the right person. I know that they contacted relatives in Germany and received many documents from Selbredes still living there in the 1990s. So, of course, these people also deserve considerable credit since they did much of the leg work by locating many illuminating German church records. We all owe a great debt to them. I wish I knew them all. These records reached me as a multitude of individual Microsoft Word files. It was difficult chasing information down since many docs needed to be checked, and doing a search or find was not practical. So, I have combined them into this single document, which can easily be searched. These were originally entitled GermanyDoc-1 and so forth. Here they are named Document #1 and so forth. There were 48 original documents, all included here, and I have added some more of my own. In principle, this is a live document which can be expanded as new information is discovered. I have edited and rearranged some information for clarity. Comments are usually included between brackets, as {comment}, to make it clear that the comment is not part of the document. I have also compiled an index of the names contained in this document. This will make it easier for the reader to chase down an individual ancestor. I hope all of you find this useful. 4

Translated by Hank Schroeder in July 1997 after getting a typed version in modern German from Harry Schroeder. To the pastoral office in Varrel! I hereby request the certification of the birth certificate of my grandfather, possibly the birth certificate of my great-grandfather and other ancestors. At issue here is the correction of my name Selbrede which originally was spelled Sehbrede and after assertions of my father the "h" was scrapped by a minister by accident was so falsely entered into the church certificate box. After admittance of the office of pastoral of Brahmstedt and my grand- and great-grandfather von Brummersloh, the church office (in) Varrel to Hagen, church office Brahmstedt, where he moved. Since the church books in Brahmstedt were entered without "h" it is possible that here with the entering of the "h" happened. However it is also possible that this already happened in Varrel. Please politely will you let me know if the name in the Varrel books is without "h" or with. Should we not be able to verify this here, when or where the accident happened, 16

17 and I possibly could assert this through a trip, so I ask you to let me know where I should go. In any case please I ask you for the birth certificate of my grand- and great-grandfather, if they were born in Brummersloh. Should other generations in the church registries be able to find out, please let me know all birth and other data in a memorandum so that I can go back futher myself because I would like to know my heritage I insert a document of the church office of Brahmstedt and ask for return. The personal identification of my grandfather is as follows: Johann Friedrich Conrad Selbrede, born in Brummersloh on (?), baptized in Varrel, married in Brahmstedt on 19 July, Great-grandfather Johann Christian Selbrede, occupant of Brummersloh, wife Brahmstedt are not available. Please sir, enter the copies of the original certificates with receipt of cost. Selbrede in Bremen Hereby I will send you the birth certificate of your grandfather Johann Friedrich Conrad, and the death certificate for your great-grandfather (Johann Christian). Out of the death certificate you can glean that your great-grandfather was born in Kirchdorf by Sulingen. He must have been born there, if his given age is correctly calculated, in the year1784. If you should like to search further you have to contact the Evangelican Lutherian Church in Kirchdorf by Sulingen.. Your Evangelican Lutherian Office K. Everything makes more sense if this old German script is translated as Carl, not Cord.) DOCUMENT #23 Letter to Wil Selbrede from Claudia Sehlbrede, June Translated 7/15/97 by Hank Selbrede, transcribed by Wil Selbrede June, 1997 Honorable Mr. Selbrede I hope I can be helpful in your ancestry search. I write in the name of Mr. Reinhard Sehlbrede, my father, who unfortunately passed away in October. Since my grandfather was in the second world war, a career soldier, in order to prove his Aryan origin, had to create an ancestry passport. This passport is still in my possession and I can excerpt the following out of it. Claudia Sehlbrede, born 24 January 1963 in Oeynhausen (A spa, the closest one to Oldenberg), married June 23, 1993 to Werner Birtsch Reinhard Sehlbrede, born 25 April 1942 in Oppeln, Schlesien, (Poland),married on 31 October 1962 to Gertrude Zelle, (he) died 7 October 1996 Heinrich Friedrich Sehlbrede, born 3 February 1919 in Liebenau, Kreis Nineburg, married 14 17

18 September 1940 to Adelheid Köhler, died 21 September 1943 in Rubland (Russia, i.e. died as a prisoner of war) Wilhelm Ferdinand Sehlbrede, born 18 April 1883 in Hoysinghausen, married 4 November 1906 to Marie Sophie Minna Schlikriede, died. Johann Wilhelm Sehlbrede, born 14 March 1844 in Kirchdorf, married 13 April 1868 to Sofie Marie Wege, died. Johann Friedrich Sehlbrede, born 17 May 1811 in Kirchdorf, married 20 November 1835 to Marie Catharina Wilhelmine Habichhorst, died 1 May Johann Hermann Sehlbrede, married to Mary Elisabeth Meier, dates are not known. (Since about 30 years separate these generations,he was probably born about 1781, and probably in Kirchdorf) I believe Johann Friedrich Sehlbrede and Heinrich Ludwig Sehlbrede (a direct ancestor to the West Salem Selbrede line) were brothers and Johann Hermann Sehlbrede was their father. (This statement, if true, provides an ancestral link between the two lines.) To my relatives otherwise belong Erna Sehlbrede, an aunt of my father and Fritz Selbrede, Liebenau, a cousin of my father. The other names on the list (of Sehlbrede names that I sent) are not known to me. Further possibility in to learn more about this is the Lutheran Church of Kirchdorf. In existence are most of the church books. I would love to hear of your success in these searches. Greetings, Claudia Selhbrede DOCUMENT #24 Letter to Wil Selbrede from Konrad Heyming, (in response to a Wil Selbrede letter to Hans Heyming). 20 DOCUMENT #26 by Wil Selbrede Letter to Wil Selbrede from Harry Selbrede. Translated by Hank Schroeder, transcribed Worpedorfer Strasse 36A, D Grasberg Dated24 June 1997 Dear Wilbur and family! I was very surprised when I received your letter with the request for an ancestry search. And the first moment I surmised that it was a reaction to my request at the end of But as you write independently of this, you researched the subject addresses in Germany from your end. Naturally as I am the only one in our family very much interested in the ancestry search on my father s side, the Selbredes, for the reasons of simplicity I made copies of the original documents and attach them. Since I know you are not familiar with the old German handwriting of these document, couldn t read them, and I glued them (the translations) over the original passages. It is for me simpler than to transmit to you these original records. This way you can find your way better than with just the originals into the subjects of your interest and your needs. As you can see, out of the original copies of my letters of my 1908 uncle Wilhelm Friedrich Adolf Selbrede, (brother of my 1902 born father Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Selbrede) in the pastoral office in Varrel because of the h in our name 1935 and 1936 he decided after this search to retain the letter h in his method of writing. These originals I have are the only ones in my family s possession. Everyone after me born, half brothers in Germany out of the addresses: (Wolfgang Selbrede born 1936 with daughter Susanne and Anja; Walter Selbrede you spoke to him briefly by telephone and also wrote him with his wife Anka and daughters Corry and Amrei; as well as after me born half-brother in Los Angeles Guenther Selbrede born 1934 with three sons Martin, (known to you by Internet and by telephone), Gerhart and Klaus with families; my oldest brother Carl born 1923 out of Reseda, Los Angeles, all received a copies of my original document in the 1970's. {Note - Wil received a set of these documents from Martin in However, there were some new documents attached to Harry s letter} Out of this you can see that the son Martin of my half-brother Guenther, twin sons, after the ancestors Christian and Cord out of these records were named. Ask him (Martin) about this when you have a chance. Now to my person. I am Harry Selbrede, after my brother Carl the second son of my 1902 born father Carl William Friedrich Selbrede, and was born in 1926 so am one year younger than you. I have two sons: Kay, 1960 born (he has an unlisted number in the telephone book), and Mark Selbrede, born Unfortunately my wife died 4 years ago after 44 years of marriage. After this my house in Lilienthal, near the art village of Worpswede, was sold. Receipts I divided with my two sons as inheritance. I moved in with my son Kay in a new large, for me actually too big, to a separate living quarters there. That lets me get the wish, should you decide once to come to old Germany, possibly on the path of your ancestry research in Kirchdorf or wherever, you are invited with your family very, very heartfeltly to stop by, to start from here your Germany research. My living quarters are big enough with sleeping facilities for 4 or more people, five rooms with kitchen and two baths, 1600 square meters. Now back to ancestry research. Even though the Selbrede line is mine, actually all Se(h)lbredes are closely related and had their origin in Kirchdorf.
