2 HISTORY OF THE BLUE MASS SEVENTH ANNUAL BLUE MASS ARCHDIOCESE OF HARTFORD In 1934, a Roman Catholic priest by the name of Father omas Dade, from the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Maryland, initiated the Catholic Police and Firemen s Society while he was assigned to Saint Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. More than 1,000 police and firemen dressed in blue uniforms and marched into Saint Patrick s Church for the celebration of the first Blue Mass on September 29, The Blue Mass, so-named because of the predominantly blue-colored uniforms of police officers, firefighters, and emergency personnel, has become increasingly popular across the country since the horrific events of September 11, Blue Mass honors those who have fallen in the line of duty and those currently serving, and it provides an opportunity for the community to show gratitude for those who serve so courageously, as well as their families, who risk so much so that others can live more safely and without fear. thedral of Saint Joseph Hartford, Connecticut The Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, A.M.

7 The Liturgy of The Word First Reading Acts of the Apostles 9:26-31 Responsorial RESPONSORIAL Psalm PSALM Psalm Psalm 22:26b 27, 22:26b and 30, and 30, MG I will praise you, Lord, in the as-sem-bly of your peo - ple. My vows I will pay before those who fear him. The poor shall eat and shall have their fill. They shall praise the LORD, those who seek him. May their hearts live on forever and ever! All the earth shall remember and return to the LORD, all families of the nations worship before him. They shall worship him, all the mighty of the earth; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust. And my soul shall live for him, my descendants serve him. They shall tell of the LORD to generations yet to come, declare his saving justice to peoples yet unborn: These are the things the LORD has done. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel John 15:1-8 The entire assembly remains standing after the proclamation of the Gospel while the assisting deacon returns to the Archbishop with the Evangelary (Book of the Gospels). The Archbishop kisses the book and blesses the assembly with the Evangelary. They gesture themselves with the sign of the cross as the Archbishop raises the Evangelary to impart the blessing. All are then seated for the homily. 3

8 Homily Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair Archbishop of Hartford Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
