County was formed in 1773 from a part of Bedford County. Nicholas came from Chester County, Pennsylvania to Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He established a plantation of 422 acres, and he called it Lutesburg. This was started in This land is now believed to be part of the Mellon estate in this area. Nicholas had 3 wives, all of whom were named Mary. His third wife was Mary Catherine Good, a widow, who had a son, David. Mrs. Good's maiden name is not known, nor are the maiden names of the first two wives. His first four children were to his first two wives, the rest were to Mary Catherine Good. Nicholas died in April of 1802 and Mary Catherine died in The children sold their shares of Lutesburg Plantation to a wealthy neighbor named Robert Huston. Other Information Nicholas's sons, Andrew and Jacob are the only children known to have remained in Pennsylvania. At present, the parents of Nicholas are not known. But it is believed that he was a Palatinate German (Pennsylvania Dutch). Nicholas has been listed to have been born in Germany.

Martha and her husband Jeremiah Bradley George and wife, Elisabeth Wallace Catherine and husband Robert I Barbara and her husband and Henry Visner At this time, this is all I have tracked. Copied from Records Of Ira Lute of Denver, Colorado in 1936: My belief is that the Lute family is Welsh for I have Records oh that they were called Luters (Those who played the Lute), when King Edward I made them take surnames. They became Lute. (This is probably not correct, they were probably German). I have records of John, Philip (b: 1537), James (b: 1542), Christopher (clothes worker) (b: 1578) and Ann, daughter of John, Baptized 1564 from a book on English and Welsh names. Many of his siblings and parents are buried near Herman in an old cemetary. Their grave stones are still visible there. George was a successful farmer and printer. Robert HUSTON was named for a good friend, who eventually bought Lutesburg Plantation from the heirs. According to a source the HUSTON family is still very prominent in the area. George didn't sell his share until quite a few years after his father's death which is why Robert HUSTON's eldest children were born there. Robert Huston LUTE died from a fall off a roof in South Dakota in 1890 or 1900, a 10 year difference in dates. I found Robert's obituary in Adam's County where there are many well-documented MCCALLs at that time. They even started a town down on the Ohio River. It is thought Robert was helping family in South Dakota at the time of his death. The LUTE's were a member of the Methodist Church. Robert and all his children were taught to read and write. He was a farmer and a carpenter. George LUTE was born 1780 at Luteburg Plantation, Pennyslvania. He is the son of Nicolas LUTE and Mary?. He was a printer and is thought to be German (Pennsylvania Dutch). It is thought George may have been born in England while his parents were traveling from Germany. This is all speculation as far as I know. George married Elizabeth WALLACE before Elizabeth was born in 1782 and may have been born in Ireland. It is said she was Scots-Irish. er father is thought to be Daniel Wallace and she had one sister and a brother named Daniel. I found the George LUTE reference in the 1780 PA census index. He was in Chester Co., Charlestown. In 1800 Nicholas was in Westmoreland, Charles was in Berks Co, EL Twp. and George was in Cumberland, EP Twp. There is an undocumented family legend that Elizabeth was mulatto or part Native American. Also, one of Elizabeth's sisters supposedly married a Black man. Because of this George became so upset that he moved the family to Ohio. One reason I don't buy the legend is that Elizabeth was born in Ireland. The possibility that her sister married a Black man is more likely to be true but many were migrating to Ohio during this time. It makes an interesting story though. There is the possibility that Elizabeth was living with her son John in Scioto County, Ohio at the time of her death. George and Elizabeth has the following children. Andrew George who married Rebecca Brannon; Jacob Nicholas married Tabitha SKIDMORE;

10 Generation 3 (con't) Andrew George who married Rebecca Brannon; Jacob Nicholas married Tabitha SKIDMORE; Mary Vernice who married William HARRIS, than Andrew MCLARY or MCCLARY; Margaret Helen born about 1810 in Pennsylvania married John MULLENS in 1828; Daniel Wallace born 1810 married Elizabeth ARNOLD (Daniel is thought to be the eldest child but it is speculation); John H. born 1812 married Susanna NICHOLS. Robert HUSTON married Sarah Elizabeth MCCALL. Much about Nicholas is speculation. Nicholas LUTE was born 1752 in the Palatinate (Swiss region), Germany. This is not documented at all and is debated as he lived in Pennsylvania is a primarily Scots-Irish region. He moved to western Pennsylvania about As to whether he served in the Revolutionary War is unknown at this time. Nicolas married three women named Mary the last being Mary Catharine who went by Catharine. It is not known which is the mother of which or all his children. So, Nicholas and Mary had the following children: These are thought to be children from the last Mary Catharine. He had, it is thought, about 13 children. Christian and Martha twins born 1776, Charles born about 1778 and George born Nicholas died in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in We descend from George. The following are correspondances I have received on the LUTE family. The religion of the LUTE family is also speculation- Family notes (?) say the family roots were in Maryland before Pennsylvania and from Germany before that. They also could mean that some family went to Maryland, some went to Pennsylvania. (If some of the family were Catholic this would make since as Maryland was a Catholic colony and Pennsylvania predominately a mixture of religions. Maryland was tolerant of other religions as well. LUTE was also a Jewish name which gives pause to other ideas.) They were in Westmoreland Co by 1783 I think it was. They may have been there earlier. Their land was surveyed in that year just like Nicholas had his land surveyed one or two years before even though he had it years before then. Ed STUMP, Hawaii (researching Margaret LUTE HINES thought to be a sister or neice of Nicolas LUTE). "Nicolas he was a very wealthy landowner. It is believed by other researchers that he was buried on his own property which was strip mined so the grave is probably lost. LUTE researchers from the area have searched for the grave...there is an old fort in the vicinity which has many headstones that have the carving entirely worn away. We most likely will never know." Keith LUTE, PA "The most knowledgeable and well-documented LUTE genealogist that I've come across is Keith LUTE in Pennsylvania. His address was until recently RD #1, Box 239, Rochester Mills, PA I think he wrote my sister that it had recently changed although he hadn't moved. We were out there a few years ago and he showed us farms, took us to graves and showed us approximately where Lutesburg Plantation was. It's impossible to pinpoint it exactly because the whole area was stripmined. Old Nicholas was sitting on a fortune if he but knew it!" Linda BERGAN "According to our information, Nickles or Nicholas LUTE arrived in western PA in March 1772 and died there in He is believed to be the only German pioneer in that area, the rest being Scots Irish. His land in the Ligonier Valley was surveyed and dated in Dec. of He left ten children and one stepson by three wives, all named Mary. His third wife went by the name of Catherine. His eldest son, George, whom I am descended from, was married to Elizabeth WALLACE and migrated to Adams Co., Ohio. I am descended from his son, Robert Huston LUTE." Linda BERGAN. *Linda is a relative descended from Granville, Robert HUSTON's brother. I received much information from her. LUTE researchers may contact her or myself. Her address is LBergan@excite.com. Mine is kgrone@yahoo.com. Linda has been in contact with other LUTE researchers as well. George Lute and Elizabeth Margaret Wallace had the following children: i.
