6 PAPER ABSTRACTS Boley, Michael, Jonathan Damp, and John Ravesloot Large Scale Surveys of BLM, SITLA, UDWR, and Private Lands Throughout Utah in 2012 In the summer and fall of 2012 William Self Associates, Inc. was awarded 20 survey jobs from the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources. The jobs varied in size from 245 to 17,920 acres, totaled 61,810 acres, and were conducted across much of the state. Most of the acres surveyed were for stabilization and rehabilitation projects related to recent fires. Private lands and lands managed by UDWR, SITLA, and BLM Field Offices in Vernal, Moab, Monticello, Fillmore, Salt Lake, Cedar City and Richfield were surveyed. About 400 sites were revisited or newly recorded. With this presentation we will provide a general overview of the season s field work and offer a few highlights. The addition of more than 60,000 surveyed acres and 400 sites is a significant complement to the existing record, and we expect that this work will provide data that could be used, for example, as a basis for predictive modeling on future surveys. Bryce, Joseph (Bringham Young University)* Filling in the Blanks: Basketry Impressions at Wolf Village Basketry is suspected to have been an important part of prehistoric life, but, because special circumstances are necessary for their preservation, opportunities to study them and their role in past cultures are limited. Examples of Fremont basketry have survived and 342 pieces have been recovered from 18 sites. These pieces have been recovered in caves or charred fragments from across the Fremont culture region with a surprising level of similarity. Recently basketry impressions have been identified amongst the ceramics from Wolf Village (42UT273). Using negative impressions, similar to those used to analyze the Pilling figurines, we can learn about an artifact type that is not prevalent at Fremont sites. Johansson, Lindsay D. (Brigham Young University)* Residential and Communal Structures: Wolf Village (42UT273) 2012 Excavations Abstract: The Brigham Young University archaeological field school has spent four field seasons excavating at Wolf Village (42UT273), a large Fremont site in Utah Valley. This site contains residential pit structures, adobe surface houses, and an oversized pit structure measuring 75.6 m², which is the largest Fremont structure found to date and was likely used for communal activities. Excavation during the 2012 field season focused on this oversized structure and will continue during the 2013 field season. 7 evaluate and monitor archaeological resources. Time and budget restraints often interfere with Cultural Resource Managers ability to proactively monitor site conditions over time. As part of the West Tavaputs Plateau (WTP) Cultural Resource Monitoring Plan for the WTP Area of Potential Effect (APE); 39 archaeological sites were identified by Dr. Jody Patterson and the Bureau of Land Management to monitor their condition over the duration of the WTP Natural Gas Full Field Development Plan. In 2010, Montgomery Archaeological Consultants Inc. began collecting site monitoring data to assess possible impacts to these cultural resources. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, to utilize the site monitoring data collected as part of the WTP APE and to explore the assumption that an increase in traffic will consequently lead to an increase in site visitation, site deterioration, vandalism, and theft, and second; to establish a baseline monitoring program for the Bureau of Land Management Price Field Office, and to analyze Site Stewardship Programs throughout the state of Utah and that of the well-funded Department of Defense (DoD) Legacy Heritage Program. Future initiatives will include expanding the PFO site stewardship program, and comparing professional site monitoring results with those collected by volunteer site monitors. Kuehn, Chimalis (Utah State University)* Preliminary Analysis of Labor Costs Associated with Fremont Irrigation Common perspectives on the Fremont portray them as small-scale foragers and farmers distinguished by geographic variability in reliance on maize cultivation. While archaeologists have assumed for years that Fremont likely engaged in irrigation to support maize farming, there has been no investigation into the potential implications of irrigation for Fremont society. Recent identification of a prehistoric irrigation ditch in south-central Utah, first noted by Noel Morss in 1928, lends an opportunity to calculate the agricultural economics of Fremont irrigation. The present research investigates some conditions under which irrigation may have been undertaken by the Fremont. The conditions include water availability, labor costs, suspected population size, and the spatial character of settlement associated with the project area. This report uses the project site as a model to describe preliminary analyses of labor and transport costs associated with an irrigated field area. Kuehn, Chimalis, Webb, Dallin, and Welker, Martin (Utah State University)* Experimental Archaeology and the Costs of Fremont Irrigation Recent rediscovery of an ancient Fremont irrigation system in central Utah presents the opportunity to model the economics of Fremont irrigation agriculture. A significant cost of irrigation farming is the construction of a ditch to bring water from a natural source to the fields. We employ an experimental approach to investigate the costs of ditch construction. Mountain mahogany digging sticks were employed to construct ditch segments under different sediment conditions, as well as a stream diversion into a ditch take-out. The experiment reveals a range of costs incurred for constructing different elements of the system. Utah Professional Archaeological Council Winter Meeting 2013 Logan, Utah 6
8 Neff, L. Ted (USU Archeological Services), Kenneth P. Cannon (USU Archeological Services), Shaun R. Nelson (Utah National Guard) and John L. Crane (Utah State University/Utah National Guard) USU Archeological Services Investigations of Prehistoric Use of the Camp Williams Uplands, Utah County, Utah USU Archeological Services has begun a partnership with the Utah National Guard to assess and update cultural resources on the Camp Williams Reservation. This work is being conducted through a cooperative agreement between the Utah National Guard and Utah State University. In this paper we will present an update on two projects from upland settings in the West Canyon area. The West Canyon area is notable for a high density of upland sites probably associated with lithic raw material sources and springs. These include the testing of three sites and the reassessment of an additional 15 sites. Patterson, Jody (Montgomery Archaeological Consultants) Mobility and Variable Tool Stone Sources: Identifying Spatial Patterning at a Large Lithic Procurement Site Near St. George, Utah Site 42Ws3151 is a large lithic resource procurement locality covering nearly two square miles of quaternary alluvium south of St. George, Utah. To investigate spatial patterning present at the site, we developed a heuristic model of reduction episodes that could be expected based on mobility strategies, material abundance, and material quality. Expectations of the model were tested against data collected from a 30% random sample of the southern half of the site. A systematic examination of different artifact types, material types, and material quality using joint-count analyses resulted in the identification of at least five different procurement strategies practiced at the site. Pederson Joel, Melissa Chapot, Reza Sohbati, Tammy Rittenour, Steve Simms How old is Barrier Canyon-style rock art? Solving a hot archaeological debate with cool geomorphic relations and new OSL dating techniques Barrier Canyon-style rock art is a powerful and distinct form unique to the central Colorado Plateau, and it has inspired decades of debate on its origin and meaning. Its age has remained unknown despite past attempts at radiocarbon dating and clues from stylistic comparisons to other rock art and figurines, with multiple hypotheses ranging from about 8,000 yrs ago (Archaic) to as late as 400 yrs ago (late/post- Fremont). Our research has been motivated by basic geomorphic relations at and near the Great Gallery panel, perhaps the type section of Barrier Canyon style rock art in the Horseshoe Canyon unit of Canyonlands National Park. The key element in this new work is the application and development of approaches in optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of stream deposits, rock falls and bedrock surfaces. Our results provide both maximum and minimum age constraints, defining a window of time for the creation of the Great Gallery panel. Our results rule out all but one remaining hypothesis for the age of Barrier Canyon-style rock art, and the age of the Great Gallery even pushes the boundaries of that. 9 Pykles, Benjamin C. (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) Hawaiians in the Utah Desert: Historical Archaeology at Iosepa Iosepa ( ) is situated in Skull Valley, Utah, approximately 60 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. Its historical and cultural significance is rooted in its origins as a Mormon Pacific Islander colony in the American West. Archaeological investigations at the abandoned town site have revealed interesting aspects of how the town s inhabitants organized and used space and the material culture available to them to construct the place they called Iosepa. The results of these investigations will be presented in the context of their relevance to understanding how the town s residents negotiated both their traditional Hawaiian cultural identity and their newfound Mormon religion. Pykles, Benjamin C. (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Richard K. Talbot (Office of Public Archaeology, Brigham Young University), Deborah C. Harris (Office of Public Archaeology, Brigham Young University), John H. McBride ( Department of Geological Sciences, Brigham Young University) Rediscovering the Original Provo, Utah Tabernacle:A Mid-Nineteenth-Century Mormon Meetinghouse** The original Provo, Utah Tabernacle was constructed from 1856 to It was one of the earliest tabernacles built by the Mormon pioneers in Utah Territory. It was razed in 1919 and largely forgotten after many of its functions shifted to a second tabernacle constructed on the same city block. This second tabernacle was tragically ravaged by fire in December 2010, but the LDS Church is currently converting the burned-out shell into a new Mormon temple. In anticipation of site disturbance, the remains of the original tabernacle were detected and visualized with ground-penetrating radar in the fall of The site was then excavated from January to March The entire foundation and interior of the tabernacle s basement was uncovered, along with many artifacts. The excavation revealed previously unknown details of the original tabernacle s architecture and construction, and provided insight into some of the uses of this early Mormon meetinghouse. Roberts, Heidi (HRA Inc., Conservation Archaeology) Finished as We Speak: The Final Field Season of the Jackson Flat Reservoir Archaeological Data Recovery Project This paper reviews the final session of data recovery investigations at the Jackson Flat Reservoir archaeological project located just south of Kanab, Utah. Between December 2011 and January 2013 HRA excavated two late or Post-Puebloan components, a late Basketmaker II settlement, a large Virgin Pueblaon site occupied between the BMII and Pueblo I periods, several Archaic campsites, and a 5,000 year old habitation site that contained four habitation features. This paper will describe these findings and review future plans for the report writing and analysis phases of this project. Utah Professional Archaeological Council Winter Meeting 2013 Logan, Utah 8
10 Rood, Ronald J. (Cardno ENTRIX) Faunal Remains from the Dick Myal Housepit Site: Evidence for Early Archaic Communal Jackrabbit Hunting in Central Wyoming. More than 11,000 pieces of rabbit-size bone fragments and more than 300 Lepus sp. bones were recovered from the Dick Myal Housepit Site. This bone is highly fragmented and burned and is tightly associated with two Opal Phase housepits. The represented elements, the patterned breakage and the context of the assemblage strongly suggest these animals were procured during a single event, likely a communal rabbit drive. Simms, Steven R. (Utah State University) Update on the Fremont Irrigation Project Noel Morss was shown what was claimed to be an ancient Fremont irrigation system on Pleasant Creek near Capitol Reef National Park in During fieldwork beginning in 2010 and continuing, the dimensions of the system from stream take-out to arable field are now defined. Subsurface channels were located in test excavations in summer 2012, and geomorphic attributes indicate antiquity well beyond the historic period. During fieldwork in November 2012, multiple, superimposed channels were observed showing maintenance and modification of a system over an unknown span of time. A sample for optical stimulated luminescence dating was retrieved with the aim of dating the last time of use. The outcome of dating is pending. This progress report accompanies a poster describing the project. Wilson, Charles and Daniel King (Bringham Young University)* Recreating Fremont Corrugated Pottery: An Exercise in Experimental Archaeology The purpose of this project has been to recreate a poorly understood Fremont (A.D. 300 A.D. 1300) ware known as corrugated pottery. Little is known about corrugation other than it seems to have made its appearance late in the Fremont world around A.D Exactly how Fremont potters made corrugated pottery is a sparsely visited subject in publications. Attempting to recreate corrugated pottery, an exercise in experimental archaeology, has already suggested that corrugation was not only decorative, but played a role in the construction of corrugated vessels. Obscure practices of bygone Fremont potters will come to light as experiments progress. *Student presentations **Poster Utah Professional Archaeological Council Winter Meeting 2013 Logan, Utah 9
