PAWNEE HIGH SCHOOL Tribe Talk INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Mr. Barham 2 Freshman 2 Survey St. Louis Art 2 Museum Black Creek 3 Crossing Movie Review 3 Editorial 3 Boys Basketball 4 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 2 Who Wants to Read? By: J.D. Dozier (No-Shave November Champ) Much thought was put into the decision to remove the A.R., requirement from the curriculum, said Mrs. Hart. English teachers and Administration agree there are more efficient ways of spending twenty minutes of class than letting students pretend they are reading a book. Instead of reading A.R. we now spend time reading together, which most students find more beneficial. It s a great program for elementary level; however at the high school level, much time is wasted, said Mrs. Hart. Because there are many C.P. classes in high school, high school students feel like they don t have time to read A.R. with the various academics they have to do. Many students in high school would wait until the night before the end of the quarter to finish their book, which created additional stress. The high school English department encourages students to read a book of their choice during free time. This is important, because students will enjoy reading more now that they re not forced to. N O V E M B E R 3 0, Quotes on A.R. A.R. is an excellent program for elementary and Junior High students. - Mrs. Wilson I d rather not have to use twenty minutes of class for A.R. - Mr. Barham I think A.R. was very educational and beneficial to our education, but I also feel like you shouldn't be forced to read. - Molly Langheim I like not having A.R. because I have so much homework and if I had A.R. I wouldn't have time to do my homework. - DeAnna Iverson I feel the A.R. program is a good program with many benefits. - Mrs. Harris Football 4 Rundown I Pledge Boys and Girls 5 Schedule Volleyball 5 By: Dominic Campo We ve all said the Pledge of Allegiance, but how many people know what the Pledge is really about. With the new Illinois state laws mandating all public high schools to allow time for a moment of silence and to say the Pledge of Allegiance, many students are showing patriotism while others are rebelling. The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Christian Socialist author and Baptist minister Francis Bellamy. Bellamy s first copy didn t contain the controversial under God section, which was included in As long as the Pledge has been around, there have been controversies surrounding the constitutionality of forcing students to stand and recite the words. Pawnee High School is taking our moment of silence and reciting the pledge every morning at 8:15. Some students are choosing to opt out of the moment of silence and pledge of allegiance. From a religious point of view it gives students time to pray and reflect on God, while others are calling it a violation of church and state. With a recent lawsuit filed by an Atheist father of a freshman in a Chicago high school, claiming that the moment of silence infringes upon the separation of church and state laws, things may be changing for schools statewide.

PAGE 2 Mr. Barham Kicks His Way Into Pawnee Creative Writing, Mythology, & Senior English teacher Mr. Barham By: Sean Sosman and Dakota Davidson 100 miles separate the town of Pawnee and the City of Champaign. However, to new Senior English teacher, and Karate student Mr. Barham, it s a much further distance. Good Lord! I m so happy to be here! stated Mr. Barham, when asked what he thinks of Pawnee. The kids are more respectful and do their work. Mr. Barham not only brings a fresh face to Pawnee this year but brings years of teaching experience with him. As a former teacher at Hazelwood, Belvidere, and Champaign, Mr. Barham has 10 plus years of teaching experience. Mr. Barham has completed undergraduate studies at Bradley University and earned a master s degree from Lindenwood University. He majored in English and has been interested in English since high school. We asked Mr. Barham about his teaching style, and he told us, When I was in high school I hated it, so I knew all the tricks to get around school. He tries to make it fun while still teaching the students what they need to know. Freshman Survey He is amazing, and plays great music when you enter his class, said senior Matt Crocker, when asked about Mr. Barham. Mr. Barham is becoming a big part of the Chatham community, as he just started a chess club for the local children. There, he also takes a major interest in Karate, and recently took a trip to Oregon to practice his moves. It appears his new students are taking a great liking to him and his teaching style. You can tell a lot about a teacher by what they teach, said Mr. Barham. By: Dustin Hughes & Jessica Basford Freshmen Favorite teachers Top 3 Murray 1 Dewerff 0% 50% 100% Miller Percentage On a recent survey of the freshmen class, half of the students said that high school was what they expected it to be like. When asked what they were going to do for finals, 95% of the students were on the right track. They were prepared to study. The other 5% said they had either forgotten we had finals, or they just weren t going to study. The majority of the freshmen enjoy the free time they have the most. When asked about their favorite teacher, the top three were Mr. Murray, Mr. Dewerff, and Mr. Miller. Even though the freshmen are often placed at the bottom of the food chain, 65% of the freshmen said they were treated just like everyone else. It was very aesthetically St. Louis Art Museum pleasing to my eyes. -Tommy Aldrich By: Kaytlin Smith and Amanda Lipe On Thursday, November 15, th Advanced Art students (Art 3 and 4) went to the St. Louis Art Museum. The students have been studying impressionism and post-impressionism focusing on Vincent Van Gogh painting styles. This was a first experience for 19 students. While on the trip, students were very interested in viewing the real paintings in person and seeing the actual brush strokes up close. According to Mr. MacDonald, To be there and actually see the work that is worth millions of dollars was hard for the students to take in. Starry Night By Van Gogh TRIBE TALK

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 2 PAGE 3 Black Creek Crossing By: Chris Gordon Thirteen-year-old Angel Sullivan has always been shunned by other kids, teased and taunted because of her appearance and strange ways. Then Angel's family moves to Roundtree, Massachusetts. They are told from the beginning that all kinds of weird things have happened in the little old house on Black Creek Road, but the lure of a new start for Angel's family beckons and they make the move anyway. But when Angel is shunned even by her new classmates, she falls deeper into depression. Until she meets Seth Baker, a fellow outcast. The two become fast friends, but are constantly harassed by the other kids as well as their own parents. The two begin to research the house and discover that a man had murdered his wife and daughter there, and every other family who moved into the house has heard voices, and seen visions. Angel and Seth are led to the basement of the house by a mysterious black cat where they find a very old book of witchcraft and begin to make potions against their enemies. But once they had begun, there was no turning back. The spirits of Black Creek Crossing had a hold on them. And the day of reckoning comes. I would give this book a 10/10 for completely filling my need for a suspenseful story with a twist. It is by far one of the best books I have ever read. If you like Stephen King, you will like John Saul and his book Black Creek Crossing. Movie Review By: Ryan Gilkeson THE COMEBACKS is about a football coach with one of the worst records in the entire history of sports who is lured out of retirement for one last shot at greatness. Unfortunately he s assigned a team filled with degenerates, losers, and generally the worst players currently known to the sport. The cast of the movie is David Koechner, Carl Weathers, Matthew Lawrence, and Malora Hardin. I would give this pretty funny movie a B+. THE GAME PLAN is about a man named Joe Kingman (the Rock) who is a famous quarterback. He likes to work hard and play hard, but his party-hearty lifestyle is upended when his 7 year old, previously unknown daughter (Madison Pettis) shows up at his doorstep. Suddenly, all the ladies in his life, including his intense agent (Kyra Sedgwick), have to take a backseat to the little woman. This movie deserves a B+ for humor and a good storyline. Commentary Note: The opinions expressed in this commentary are not necessarily those of the Tribe Talk staff or Pawnee High School. By: Eric Caldwell 1954 was the height of the Cold War. Hatred grew for the Soviet Union not just because of its governments actions, but because its leaders were atheists also happened to be the year that we added the phrase under God into the Pledge. It was added as part of a movement to separate us from our enemies. In the current war however, it doesn t serve its purpose. Our enemies use God as their justification for the violent acts they commit. That s not to say that your religion doesn t define who you are, but its original purpose doesn t stand true anymore. Even if we were to take under God out of the Pledge of Allegiance, I don t believe children should be required to recite it. And while I choose not to stand during the pledge, I don't feel that I m disrespecting the troops. Because honestly, what s more disrespectful, supporting the decision to keep them in a pointless war, or protesting to bring them home. I agree with Vinzag (a former military officer) when he commented on about the pledge. I don t believe in a God who requires constant flattery and proclamations of loyalty, and I don t wish to live in a nation that requires the same either and I won t (credit) myself for being an American. Great, America is a good country. We re all lucky to be Americans. But do we constantly have to pat ourselves on the back or shout our presumed superiority from the rooftops?

PAGE 4 Boy s Basketball Bounces Back Into Season Basketball coach, Mr. DeWerff By: Matt Crocker Coming off of a 19-9 season last year, the Indians are looking to pick up where they left off. We have four guys (Ryan Beaty, Eddie Bowen, Daniel Kohavi, and Alan Mundhenke) returning from last year who all started at one time or another. We have more guys this year who are comfortable facing the basket. We may not have much size but our guys really get up and defend and they work hard on the defensive end. said head coach Dan DeWerff. With the loss of 3 seniors from last year s team, De- Werff said the leadership they had will be missed, and so will their 30 points and 14 rebounds per game. We have guys that are ready to step in that have had a year to get used to our system. With each new near come many changes in offense and defense. This year is no exception. Our offensive and defensive philosophy is the same. We will make some adjustments according to the new personnel we are playing with this year said Coach DeWerff. After making it all the way to Sectionals and losing to Nokomis in a close game, their goals are still the same from last year, such as winning conference, tournaments, and a regional title. Ever since 2005, The TRIBE has been a part of the basketball season. According to Coach DeWerff, The TRIBE is great! The enthusiasm they bring to the home and away games is very beneficial to our team. We need that enthusiasm this year especially because our schedule is pretty tough and we will need all the help we can get. The most exciting game of the year, even though we lost, was Williamsville - Sean Sosman Football Rundown By: Jon Bruss The Football squad ended the season a rough 2-7. Many injuries were suffered this year, with at least four players out for the entire season, including captain Joey Walters. Even with all the injuries, the Indians always kept their heads up and fought a battle every week. The most exciting game of the year, even though we lost, was Williamsville, because it was a back and forth battle all game until the last seconds, says senior lineman Sean Sosman. Although the season was not as successful as many would have liked, there were many conference awards handed out to the Pawnee Football team. Pawnee was tied for second in the conference with the number of All Conference players, at nine. Winners of these awards were Logan Williams First Team Center, Jon Bruss Second Team Half Back and Second Team Defensive Back, Richie Sholar Second Team Tight End and Second Team Defensive End, Robbie Boarman Second Team Linebacker and Second Team Kicker, Cody Price Honorable Mention, and Eddie Bowen Honorable Mention. Team awards were voted on by the players and handed out at the Banquet. Winners of these awards were Robbie Boarman Best Linebacker, Jon Bruss Best Offensive Back, Defensive Back, and Team MVP, Vince Johnson Best Offensive Lineman, Sean Koen Mr. Hardnosed, Cody Price Best Defensive Lineman, Richie Sholar Receiver and 3 D. TRIBE TALK Jon Bruss (32) carries for Pawnee.

From the Tribe Talk Staff I d Do Anything Original Poem By Jesse Ryan Boughton I d stand outside your window, Out in the pouring rain. I d sit outside your doorstep, Calling out your name. I d do anything To be with you. I d give up all I have, And all I once knew. I d do anything No matter what I must do. I d do anything To be with you. I d walk through the valley, Of the shadow of death. Even if I had no energy left. You d be my strength, To make it through. I d do anything, To get to you. I d go off to fight in war That I don t believe in To secure your future. If that s the way it had to be. I d give my life, So you could be free. I d sail a ship, On the seas for ten years, And hold back all of those lost tears. Just to see you for one night, I d cut out my heart, And seal it tight. I would go to the ends of the earth, Cheat death twice, Because that s what your worth. More than a life s supply, Of treasure and gold. In the end, I d rather have you to hold. TRIBE TALK
