(CEF) will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Springfield, Illinois, on July 5-7, Registration for the Convention and business sessions will be held at the Crowne Plaza from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Sunday, July 5th, and beginning at 7:00 am on Monday, July 6th. The By-Laws of Synod (4.2) state that delegates of a voting congregation shall be accredited. This involves preconvention registration by both the pastoral delegate and lay delegate with properly signed documentation by two congregational officers. At the Convention, they are to identify themselves to the credentials committee, presenting a card with their name and congregation. Each delegate is to bring a copy of the Synodical Credential for Presidential Election and submit it at the time of registration. Further details will be posted separately. All nonvoting ordained and commissioned ministers who are members of the Synod within the District shall serve as advisory delegates. They are entitled to voice and vote on a floor committee, if appointed, and to voice in the Convention. All advisory members are expected to attend all sessions of the Convention. Guests, exhibitors, and others are welcome to attend, but are also to present themselves to the credentials committee at the registration desk to identify themselves. Prior to the Convention, each ordained minister, each voting lay delegate preregistered, and each school principal will receive a CD with Convention materials included. Other advisory delegates desiring this information may request it from the District Office. Each individual is responsible for printing any material they need for the Convention off the CD. There will be very limited printed Convention material at the registration desk. There will be no electrical outlets available in the convention hall for computers. We plan to again use voting key pads. This should hasten the election process and eliminate much paper work. Each voting delegate will be assigned a wireless voting key pad. There is a charge of $395 for any damaged or lost key pad. continued on Page 4

4 4 The GatePost June th Regular Convention Overtures to the 2015 CID Convention Ten overtures have been submitted for consideration by the floor committees for the 2015 CID Convention. Convention floor committees, meeting in May, will determine which overtures will be submitted as resolutions for consideration by delegates attending the convention. Topics of overtures include: Several overtures focused on the case of Rev. Dr. Matthew Becker, an LCMS pastor. The issue revolves around whether an investigation in the Northwest District can be appealed and whether Rev. Becker should repent of teaching doctrine contrary to LCMS doctrine. To amend Synod Bylaw concerning the Commission on Constitutional Matters. To memorialize the Commission on Theology and Church Relations to develop doctrinal statements on the topics of: The male-only pastorate, the six days of creation, and the necessity of a call and ordination for the exercise of the functions of the pastoral office. To reaffirm the God-given form of marriage. To suggest possible emphases for the LCMS next triennium. To commend Deaconess Linda Schaefer upon her retirement. We will also be updating the District Handbook as the 2015 edition based on the recommendations of the LCMS Committee on Constitutional Matters. CEF overtures to recognize the service of Danny Magelitz and Rev. Charles Olander who have term-limited out of the CEF Board. Electing the Synodical President Electing the Synodical President takes place by electronic vote prior to the 2016 Synodical Convention. Only delegates in attendance at the 2015 CID Convention are eligible to vote for the Synodical President. If a lay delegate is unable to attend the 2015 CID Convention, but his alternate attends, the alternate is the one voting for Synodical President. If no lay delegate attends the 2015 CID Convention, the congregation has lost its vote for Synodical President. If one or both delegates are unavailable for the election, Synodical Bylaw allows the congregation to select a substitute. Convention Information continued from Page 1 Registration Fees: Each voting delegate will be assessed a fee of $75 to cover Convention costs and two meals on Monday. Voting delegate registration not received by June 1, 2015, will be subject to an additional $50 fee. Nonvoting ordained and commissioned ministers who are actively serving will be assessed a fee of $25 which does not include meals. If meals are desired add $60 ($25 for lunch and $35 for dinner). For emeritus, ordained and commissioned ministers, guests, and exhibitors, there is no charge for registration, but the $60 meal charge applies if meals are desired and at least one week notice must be given before the Convention convenes. Exhibitor space is available for $30 per table desired. If an electrical connection is desired, an additional $30 is required. Exhibitors will be assigned tables and a layout will be available so Conventioneers will know where each exhibitor is located. Hotel Information: Everyone is to make their own reservation with the hotels. Rooms will be available at the Crowne Plaza and the Holiday Inn Express (next door). When you contact the hotels for reservation, tell them you are with the CID Convention to receive our special rates. If you have any difficulties, contact the District Office. Crowne Plaza 3000 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield (217) Holiday Inn Express 3050 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield (217) Directions: From Interstate 55 take Exit #94 (Stevenson Drive) and travel west to Dirksen Parkway. Mark Wood LCMS Director of Witness & Outreach The 2015 edition of the CID Bible Bowl was held Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Trinity Lutheran School in Springfield. The topic for this year s Youth Bible Bowl was Judges and Ruth. Although only six teams participated this year, the competition was lively and in several instances hard fought. Participating teams included: St. John, Quincy; Trinity, Coal Valley; Our Redeemer, Bloomington; St. Matthew, Milan; Immanuel, Altamont; and Our Redeemer, Quincy. First Place honors went to the team from Trinity, Coal Valley (pictured top). Team members (from left to right) are: Katie Engebrecht, Taya Peterson, Caleb Engebrecht, Grace Harris, Zoey Harris, Hunter Peterson, and Angela Jepsen. Second Place (pictured right) went to St. Matthew, Milan s team, consisting of: Hanna Dodd, Jonathan Michel, and Eric Campbell. Third Place (pictured left) honors were earned by Our Redeemer, Bloomington. Team members include: Stephanie Soukup, Kari Ann Kelly, and Kea Miles. It is interesting to note that these same three teams were reported last year as the top teams in the 2014 Bible Bowl. The only difference is that Trinity, Coal Valley, and St. Matthew, Milan, switched positions from last year s final standings. 7 CID LLL at the Illinois State Fair The CID Lutheran Laymen s League (LLL) has a booth at the Illinois State Fair every year. This year s Fair will be held August 13-23, 2015, at the State Fair Grounds in Springfield, IL. The main purpose of the booth is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, by giving away New Testament Bibles, Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) Project Connect booklets on pertinent topics, zipper pulls with a cross, and children s books which talk about Jesus. The second purpose is to promote LHM, which has the theme of Bringing Christ to the Nations and the Nations to the Church. LHM accomplishes this with their radio program titled The Lutheran Hour, Daily Devotions delivered via or online, JCPlayZone website for children, witness training workshops, and ministry resources for congregations. $6,000 to $7,000 is required to fund this ministry at the State Fair. Expenses include site rental, tent rental, and cost of bibles, booklets, zipper pull supplies, children s books, and ice. As their members are aging, the CID LLL is looking for more volunteers to help with this ministry. If you would like to make a donation or volunteer, please feel free to contact Deloris Blessman at delorisblessman@yahoo.com.
