Final Thoughts... What kind of witnesses are they? The Emperor s New Clothes Many years ago there lived an emperor who loved beautiful new clothes so much that he spent all his money on being finely dressed. One day two swindlers came to the emperor's city. They said that they were weavers and they knew how to make the finest cloth imaginable. Not only were the colors and the patterns extraordinarily beautiful, but this material was MAGIC... it appeared invisible to anyone who was incompetent or stupid. The emperor gave them a great sum of money to weave their cloth for him. They set up their looms and pretended to go to work, although there was nothing on the looms. They asked for the finest silk and the purest gold, all of which they hid away, continuing to pretend to weave cloth. Afraid that other people would think that they were stupid, the emperor and all his attendants pretended to see clothes that weren t there, even when the emperor marched in his underwear through the streets of the town. It wasn t until a young child cried that the emperor had no clothes that the people realized they'd been duped. The Blind Men and the Elephant A king in ancient India had never seen an elephant. He sent his seven best advisors who all happened to be blind to the place where an elephant was kept to examine the animal and report back to him. Each blind man walked up to the elephant and felt the part that was nearest to him. When they were done, they returned to the king to explain what an elephant was like. An elephant is like a pot, said the man who touched the elephant s head. No, indeed it is like a fan, said the one who touched its ear. No, no, a spear! said the one who touched the tusk. A snake, a snake, said the one who touched the trunk. Clearly, an elephant is like a wall, said the blind man who touched the body, but the one who touched his tail argued that an elephant is like a rope. When the last man, who had only touched the elephant s legs, said it was like a tree, the king gave up in disgust. 18 3

The Boy Who Cried Wolf There once was a shepherd boy who tended his sheep at the foot of a mountain near a dark forest. It was lonely for him, so he came up with a plan to get a little company. He rushed down towards the village calling out "wolf, wolf!" and the villagers came rushing out to help him protect the sheep from the wolf. When the villagers found that there really was no wolf, they were very angry and left again, mumbling in disgust. The practical joke pleased the boy so much that a few days after he tried the same trick, and again the villagers came running to help. This time they were even more angry when they learned the boy had lied. Shortly after this a wolf actually did come out from the forest. The boy cried out "wolf, wolf!" even louder than before. But this time the villagers, who had been fooled twice before, thought the boy was again lying. Nobody came to his aid, so the wolf made a good meal of the boy and his flock. Bias, Credibility, or Persuasiveness? After examining the three folk tales, try to determine which trait each one matches. Remember, it can be a good or a poor example! The weavers from The Emperor s New Clothes: The seven blind advisors who examined the elephant: The little boy who cried wolf: 4 17

Group Mapping Strategy The city of Halcina has been divided into 20 grid areas. Each of those areas can be monitored by one peace officer, security camera, or curfew team only. Unfortunately, the town budget can pay for only eight of each of these deterrents. Red Xs mark the sites of vandalism. Work with your team to place your eight peace officer, curfew, or camera tokens strategically to best protect the city from vandals. 16 5

Group name: Original group members: Describe your plan to stop vandalism. Details of your method: Method: How Wo Solve Vandalism Two best reasons for choosing this method to fight vandalism: One reason your group is against the other two methods (circle the method that goes with each reason): Cameras/Curfew/Peace Officers Cameras/Curfew/Peace Officers 6 15

Persuade the Policy Makers Your group is responsible for pushing your plan through the legislature to make it part of the laws of Halcina. To do that, you have to get more people on your side. You won t convince the policy makers of Halcina unless you have at least 67 percent of the population on your side. In this classroom, that means your group must grow to at least: students Collaborate with your group to come up with the most persuasive argument for your solution. Share the ideas and reasons you listed on pages of this field book. Listen to the ideas of other group members. Choose your best arguments and add them to the chart on page 15. Come to a consensus about your reasons for rejecting the other options. Make sure that everyone in your group supports the final decisions (you don t want to LOSE group members, you want to add more!) ould You e the Problem? Collaboration Is Key! Remember, people are more likely to support your ideas if they feel they have been a part of the decision-making process. Let everyone in the group contribute to your proposed solution. 14 7

Impressions of Oceana Use this space to make some notes and sketches about your impressions of the city of Halcina on the planet Oceana. What do you think about this land so far? What should the government do about the vandalism problem in the city? Cameras Curfew Peace Officers ers ers Cameras Curfew Peace Officers 8 13

My Solution You ve interviewed the citizens of Halcina and considered all of the evidence. Now it s time to earn your cadet s pay. What do you think is the BEST method to halt vandalism in this community: more peace officers, security cameras, or a curfew? Fill out the card below to help you organize your thoughts. Citizen Interviews As you investigate the vandalism problem, use IREC, the Oceana Alliance Guidelines for solving problems. Record and organize your interviews with your Smart Pad in the game, and add extra notes on the next few pages. Interview: Talk to people, ask lots of questions Record: Make notes about everything you learn Examine: Look carefully at all the notes you ve taken Which method are you recommending? Circle one: Categorize: Organize your notes into useful chunks of information Two reasons you chose this method to fight vandalism: Cast of Characters Colonel Amzen Players supervisor, who monitors their progress. Jasimi Players injured partner, recuperating in hospital Officer Vaz Experienced police officer Donis Advocate for Oceana government Cameras/Curfew/Peace Office Maqi Owner of Wave Riders One reason you are against each of the other two methods (circle the method that goes with each reason): Cameras/Curfew/Peace Office Luchol Mojani Geven Retired captain of the Alliance Police officer, new on the job Owner of Geven s Gadgets Aeshie Young girl Which method are you the MOST against? Circle one: Orsani Janil Hospital nurse Jasimi s mother Sirene Eccentric woman in park 12 9
