1 3 Year old SEEDS LESSON PLAN: Sunday February 3, th Sunday in Ordinary Time THEME: Jesus asks us to have faith. Objectives: 1. The children will learn about Jesus sharing the good news 2. The children will pray using sign language. 3. The children will practice listening. Before you arrive: Read through lesson plan: if you need additional resources/supplies, please call the RE office: NOTE: lessons available online Pray for your students and their families. Refer to following website for online Seeds Teaching Guide: When you arrive: Pick up your buckets, supplies and CD player from shelf outside lounge Set up your classroom Prepare Gospel area-bible, candle, matches, rosary, Seeds, Holy Water Prepare circle space Make sure you have all supplies needed for lesson: name tags, attendance sheet, stickers, etc. You may want to precut Teacher s Seeds pages 3-4 to make charade cards When Children arrive: Greet children enthusiastically by name Help children find their name tag Guide children to add a sticker to the classroom attendance chart by their name Have the children complete the coloring sheet YOU ARE READY TO START! 9:00 a.m. Opening Prayer Circle Space (Seeds Copy) Welcome everyone, remember any child who is absent Have children respond AMEN Read: Dear Jesus, thank you for bringing us together today. Help us to be good listeners and learners. We want to hear your word and be your followers. Amen 9:05 a.m. Gather and Sing Set the scene for the lesson by calling the children to the circle in a whispering voice. Have them stand together a little distance from you. You whisper, If you can hear me, come to the circle and raise your hand. Perhaps no one will hear you.. Say a bit louder but still in a whisper, If you can hear me, come to the circle and raise both hands. In a near normal voice say, If you can hear me, come to the circle and pat your tummy. Finally say quite loudly, If you can hear me, come to the circle and pat your head.

2 When the children have all gathered, ask them to join in the Seeds song, or some other gathering song, in a very soft voice. Next sing a song in a loud, outdoor voice. ASK the children which voice they liked best to listen to? Were they able to hear the loud and soft sounds? PLAY One Family from Seeds music CD 9:10 am Storytelling: Skippy the Skunk Circle Space Supplies: Seeds Teaching Guide Read Skippy the Skunk Seeds Teaching Guide #3. 9:20 a.m. Stretch and Sing Circle Space To give the children an experience in listening, have them stand and listen to If You re Happy and You Know It from the Seeds music CD. After singing and making the appropriate gestures one time, play the song again. This time have the children only do the actions and not sing the accompanying words. For instance, instead of singing, clap your hands, they will simply clap. Comment on how watchers could tell what words are missing by watching the actions. This is like listening with our eyes. 9:25 a.m. Gospel Ritual: Gospel Space Remind children it s quiet time * Have children sit in a circle to hear the gospel * Sing Two Little Ears from the Seeds CD as an introduction to the Gospel. Have the children add simple gestures. Two little ears to hear God s word. (hands cupping ears) Two little eyes to see God s love, (pointing to eyes) Two little hands to work each day, (holding out hands) Alleluia! Hear me pray. (folding hand in prayer) Light the candle Stand up and go around the prayer circle, using holy water bless each child by signing a cross on his or her forehead and welcoming the child by name. Show the children the Seeds cover and tell them that this gospel story is about Jesus sharing Good News. Have the children look at the Seeds cover and describe what they see. Listen to what he and the children are talking about. Guide children for the Blessing: Make a cross on your forehead and Say Keep Jesus in my thoughts Make a cross on your lips and Say Keep Jesus in my words Make a cross over your heart and Say Keep Jesus in my heart Read today s Gospel Luke 4: When Jesus lived on earth, he told everyone who he was. I am the person God has sent to tell you how much God loves you. Jesus said. Not everyone listened to Jesus and not everyone believed him. Some people thought he should just go away. Some people even tried to push Jesus off a cliff. But lots of other people were glad to listen to Jesus. They were happy that God had sent Jesus to help poor people and sick people and little children.

3 Conclude by saying, This is the good news about Jesus. Have the children pick up their copies of Seeds and tell you what is happening in the picture. Jesus is speaking, what is he saying? The people at the bottom look unhappy. What is wrong with them? Maybe they are jealous of Jesus. The children and the woman are happy. Why? Conclude by saying that Jesus gave us good news about God and we can be happy about it. 9:35 am Blindfold and Listen Circle Space Supplies: things that make sounds-alarm clock, tape, zipper, whistle, mystery bags OR blind folds Explain to the children that you are going to play a listening game where everyone has to use the sense of hearing. Before the game can begin, everyone has to put on a blindfold(close their eyes) Have ready the materials to create a variety of sounds. After the children are blindfolded, eyes are closed, make a sound and ask the children to guess what object is making that sounds. For example: an alarm clock ticking or ringing, a zipper moving back and forth, a scissors being opened and closed, a sheet of paper being crumpled. The children remove their blindfolds or open their eyes when they have named all the sounds. 9:45 am: The Noises Game Circle Space Supplies: precut Teacher s Seeds pages 3-4 to make noise cards, scissors Use the picture cards from page 3-4 seeds. Move to the work area. Distribute pages 3-4 of Seeds and scissors. The children will cut the page into eight pieces by cutting along the bold lines on the words side. When they have finished cutting, distribute envelopes to put the cards in. Have the children leave their envelopes at their work places and move to the story circle. Show them how to play the game by using your set of cards. Draw one card from your envelope at a time. Show the children the picture side of that card. The children identify the object, animal or person and make the sound they identify with that object, animal, or person. Show them the word on the other side of the card, read it to them, and have them say it after you. Assign partners and have the children get their envelopes and play the game in pairs. When you call a halt to this activity, remind the children to take their games home to play with their families. Can also play the game like Charades by having each child take a turn acting out the picture on the card and let the other children guess. 9:55 am: Closing Prayer I Pray with My Hands Circle Space Supplies: Seeds Have children look at page 2 of the Seeds. Teach them the closing praying using sign language. EXTRA TIME: 1. Read large story from teacher s lounge.

What the Catholic Church Believes and Teaches Book, page 6, We Go To Church. 10:00 a.m. Parents should arrive Remember: *Children remain in classroom until parents come to pick them up *Make sure children have everything they brought with them: their Seeds guides, color sheet, envelopes with game pieces AFTER ALL CHILDREN ARE GONE, REMEMBER: Please return tables, chairs to original places as you found them Return all supplies, etc. to your bucket Look around room for anything you may have forgotten Turn out light; close classroom door Return bucket and CD player to carts Remember to Thank God for helping you this week! Thank you for all you do!! Make sure you tell your Sunday school coordinator if you have any question or concern!! Have a great week!!
