6 TOGETHER IN SCRIPTURE John Chapter 20 Context: Setting the Table In his first twelve chapters, John introduced the witnesses to Jesus and described his public ministry, including his first six signs and the increasing opposition these signs led to. Chapters thirteen through seventeen record Jesus s preparation of his disciples for his soon coming departure. Continuing from chapters eighteen and nineteen, this twentieth chapter concludes John s account of Jesus s death-and-resurrection his seventh and final sign. Content: Hearing the Text Read John 20 together out loud. Credo: Believing the Truth The crucifixion of Jesus devastated his disciples. He had warned them it was coming, comforted them before it happened, and prayed for them as it approached. Yet they were still caught unprepared. When Mary encountered the empty tomb, the location of the corpse was the only thing on her mind. John believed, but even he did not yet understand. The appearance of Jesus, fully alive after being truly dead, changed everything. His resurrection, the greatest of his signs, proved that he really was all that he had claimed to be. Yet the signs that Jesus performed were not for his first disciples alone. Because their testimony was written down, preserved for us in Scripture, we can believe as confidently as they did that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Conduct: Reshaping Our Walk Discuss the meaning of the text and then walk through the following application questions as you discuss the difference this meaning ought to make in our lives today. Even after his greatest failure, a repentant Peter remained in the company of other disciples. What are some ways in which we might be tempted to allow past or current failure to keep us away from the fellowship of our fellow believers? Thomas refused to believe that Jesus had really risen from the dead. Yet when Jesus appeared to him, he repeated the very words of Thomas s doubt he had been listening all along! How might we speak or think of our always-present Savior as though he were absent?
