1 R E D E E M E R C H U R C H Worship Service Reflection Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. Joshua 4:20 24 And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal. 21 And he said to the people of Israel, When your children ask their fathers in times to come, What do these stones mean? 22 then you shall let your children know, Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground. 23 For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over, 24 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, that you may fear the LORD your God forever. It is not necessary for me to be rich, or what the world accounts wise. It is not necessary for me to be healthy, or admired by my fellow -worms. It is not necessary for me to pass through life in a state of prosperity and outward comfort these things may be, or they may be otherwise, as the Lord in His wisdom shall appoint. But it is necessary for me to be humble and spiritual, to seek communion with God, to adorn my profession of the Gospel, and to yield submissively to His disposal, in whatever way, whether of service or suffering, He shall be pleased to call me to glorify Him in the world. It is not necessary for me to live long, but highly expedient that while I do live I should live to Him. Here then I would bound my desires, and here, having His word both for my rule and my warrant, I am secured from asking amiss. Let me have His presence and His Spirit, wisdom to know my calling, and opportunities and faithfulness to improve them. And as to the rest, Lord, help me to say, what Thou will, when Thou will, and how Thou will. John Newton 1

Leader: I declare that your steadfast love is established forever; People: Your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens. Leader: You said, I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to my servant David: I will establish your descendants forever, and build your throne for all generations. People: Praise the Lord! P R A Y E R O F A D O R A T I O N P R A Y E R C O N C L U D E S B Y S A Y I N G I N U N I S O N : Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Hence, all our worship services begin with a scriptural call to worship (that is, the content of the call comes from God s own Word quoted by the leader and the congregation). In this call we are reminded that God always takes the initiative. He always comes toward his people first, in grace. Our worship is a reflexive and deliberate response to his gracious call. We are promised that when we worship him correctly, he is glorified and the dislocations of our lives are healed. 2

4 The Church s One Foundation WORDS: SAMUEL J. STONE, 1866 MUSIC: AURELIA, 1864 The Church s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord, She is His new creation By water and the Word. From heaven He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her And for her life He died. Elect from every nation, Yet one o er all the earth; Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one birth; One holy Name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, With every grace endued. 'Mid toil and tribulation And tumult of her war, She waits the consummation of peace forevermore; Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great church victorious Shall be the church at rest. 4

5 Cleansing C A L L T O R E P E N T A N C E Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen. 10 P R A Y E R S O F T H E P E O P L E Leader: Strengthen this congregation in its work and worship. Fill our hearts with your self-giving love, that our voices may speak your praise and our lives may conform to the image of your Son. In your mercy, People: Hear us, Lord Leader: Nourish us with your Word and sacraments, that we may faithfully minister in your name and witness to your love and grace for all the world. In your mercy, People: Hear us, Lord Leader: Through these ten years you have sustained us. In our joys, in our conflicts, in our confusion, in our accomplishments you have shown yourself to be faithful beyond what we could have asked or imagined. We thank you and praise you that he who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it. In your mercy, People: Hear us, Lord The congregation is invited to come forward to the microphone at the center aisle to pray. In our prayers let us thank God for his faithfulness to Redeemer these past 10 years, and let us pray for his strength and guidance into our future. After each prayer the congregation will respond, Hear us, Lord Leader: God of compassion, into your hands we commend all of these prayers, trusting in your mercy now and forever. In your mercy, People: Hear us, Lord. Amen. 10

We are not worthy so much as to gather the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord; you ever love to show mercy. Grant us therefore (gracious Lord) so to partake of the body of your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his cup, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. *A prayer written by Thomas Cranmer, 16th century archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the English Reformation. He was martyred for his faith. W O R D S O F I N S T I T U T I O N D I S T R I B U T I O N O F T H E B R E A D A N D T H E C U P Directions for taking communion: Redeemer Church welcomes all sincere Christians those who are trusting in Jesus Christ for salvation, understand the meaning of the Lord s Supper, and are in good standing with congregations that proclaim the gospel to receive Holy Communion with us. Please note that we use wine for Communion; if you prefer non alcoholic grape juice, the grape juice is white and the wine is red. For those with wheat allergies, a gluten free cracker is available in place of the bread. Also, the bread and the wine may be eaten and drunk as they are received. Please dispose of the cups in the trash receptacle. A Word to Parents: Children are welcome at the communion table. To receive the Lord s Supper, a child must have been baptized and been formally received as a communing member by the Session of this church or the governing body of the church to which you belong. If you have any question about how the process works, please contact Pastor David. Children may take the wine at their parents discretion. 12 P R A Y E R S F O R T H O S E N O T C O M M U N I N G (Because Redeemer is a church that is not only for convinced Christians, but also for people at different stages in their spiritual journey, we gladly extend room for you to process, think, and dialogue. Use the prayers provided below as guides to reflect upon and respond to what God is doing in your life.) P R A Y E R F O R T H O S E S E A R C H I N G F O R T R U T H Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. P R A Y E R O F B E L I E F Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. P R A Y E R F O R T H O S E S T R U G G L I N G W I T H S I N Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen. P R A Y E R O F C O M M I T M E N T Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. 12
