R E D E E M E R C H U R C H Worship Service Reflection In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die. Where you invest your love, you invest your life. Awake my soul. You were made to meet your maker. - Mumford & Sons ''In eternity this world will be Troy, I believe, and all that has passed here will be the epic of the universe, the ballad they sing in the streets.'' - Marilynne Robinson, Gilead Christ is coming, and when he gets here it is the graves that will suffer the deepest robbery, the law that will be deprived of its claims, and the evil one who will stand empty-handed. - James Nestigen 1

Leader: And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. People: Lift up your eyes all around, and see; then you shall see and be radiant. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. H Y M N S O F P R A I S E A N G E L S W E H A V E H E A R D O N H I G H / J E S U S I C O ME ( M U S I C O N P A G E S 3 4) *Biblical worship is always a response to God s gracious revelation of himself to his people. Hence, all our worship services begin with a scriptural call to worship (that is, the content of the call comes from God s own Word quoted by the leader and the congregation). In this call we are reminded that God always takes the initiative. He always comes toward his people first, in grace. Our worship is a reflexive and deliberate response to his gracious call. We are promised that when we worship him correctly, he is glorified and the dislocations of our lives are healed. 2

Jesus, I Come WORDS: WILLIAM SLEEPER. MUSIC: GREG THOMPSON Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come; Jesus I come. Into Thy freedom, gladness and light, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of my sickness into Thy health, Out of my wanting and into Thy wealth, Out of my sin and into Thyself, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into the glorious gain of Thy cross, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of earth s sorrows into Thy balm, Out of life s storms and into Thy calm, Out of distress into jubilant psalm, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into Thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to Thee. Out of myself to dwell in Thy love, Out of despair into raptures above, Upward forever on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to Thee. 4
Cleansing C A L L T O R E P E N T A N C E O promised Christ: We are a world at war. Our peace depends on your coming. We are a sinful people. Our pardon depends on your coming. We are full of good intentions but weak at keeping promises; our only hope of doing God s will is that you should come and help us do it. Lord Christ, Word made flesh, our world waits for your peace, for your pardon, and for your grace. Come, Lord Jesus. Israel s strength and consolation, Hope of all the earth thou art; Dear desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart. W O R D S O F A S S U R A N C E A N D T H E P E A C E Leader: You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God. (Ephesians 2:19-22, NRSV) Leader: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And also with you. 5

Joseph went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 O Little Town of Bethlehem WORDS: PHILIPS BROOK S MUSIC: LEWIS REDNER O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light The hopes and fears Of all the years Are met in thee tonight How silently how silently The wondrous gift is given So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven No ear may hear His coming But in this world of sin Where meek souls will receive Him still The dear Christ enters in O holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us we pray Cast out our sin and enter in Be born in us today We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell O come to us abide with us Our Lord Emmanuel 7
O Come, O Come Emmanuel WORDS: JOHN NEALE & HENRY COFFIN MUSIC: THOMAS HELMOR E O come O come Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear Rejoice, rejoice Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel O come O come great Lord of might Who to Thy tribes on Sinai's height In ancient times once gave the law In cloud and majesty and awe Rejoice, rejoice Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel O come Thou Key of David come And open wide our heavenly home Make safe the way that leads on high And close the path to misery Rejoice, rejoice Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel O come Desire of nations bind In one the hearts of all mankind O bid our sad divisions cease And be Thyself our King of peace Rejoice, rejoice Emmanuel shall come to thee O Israel 8
I Cannot Tell WILLIAM Y. FULLERTON; MUSIC: LONDONDERRY I cannot tell why He Whom angels worship, Should set His love upon the sons of men, Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers, To bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that He was born of Mary When Bethlehem s manger was His only home, And that He lived at Nazareth and labored, And so the Savior, Savior of the world is come. I cannot tell how silently He suffered, As with His peace He graced this place of tears, Or how His heart upon the cross was broken, The crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, He heals the brokenhearted, And stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, And lifts the burden from the heavy laden, For yet the Savior, Savior of the world is here. I cannot tell how He will win the nations, How He will claim His earthly heritage, How satisfy the needs and aspirations Of East and West, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory, And He shall reap the harvest He has sown, And some glad day His sun shall shine in splendor When He the Savior, Savior of the world is known. 9
Communion I N V I T A T I O N T O T H E S A C R A M E N T T H E G R E A T T H A N K S G I V I NG Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Minister: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right for us to give thanks and praise. Minister: Lord God Almighty, King of glory and love eternal, you are worthy at all times to receive adoration, praise, and blessing; we praise you now for sending your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, for whom our hearts wait, and to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, be honor and dominion, now and for ever. Therefore we join our voices with all the saints and angels and the whole creation to proclaim the glory of your name. (The Congregation Sings Together) Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Minister: You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. He came among us as one of us, taking the lot of the poor, sharing human suffering. We rejoice that in his death and rising again, you set before us the sure promise of new life, the certain hope of a true home where we will sit at table with Christ, our host. For this we wait with longing. Send your Holy Spirit on us and these your gifts of bread and wine, that we may know Christ s presence, real and true, and be his faithful followers, showing your love for the world. 10
W O R D S O F I N S T I T U T I O N M E M O R I A L A C C L A M A T I O N Minister: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: People: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Minister: Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. D I S T R I B U T I O N O F T H E B R E A D A N D T H E C U P Directions for taking communion: Redeemer Church welcomes all sincere Christians those who are trusting in Jesus Christ for salvation, understand the meaning of the Lord s Supper, and are in good standing with congregations that proclaim the gospel to receive Holy Communion with us. Please note that we use wine for Communion; if you prefer non alcoholic grape juice, the grape juice is white and the wine is red. For those with wheat allergies, a gluten free cracker is available in place of the bread. Also, the bread and the wine may be eaten and drunk as they are received. Please dispose of the cups in the trash receptacle. A Word to Parents: Children are welcome at the communion table. To receive the Lord s Supper, a child must have been baptized and been formally received as a communing member by the Session of this church or the governing body of the church to which you belong. If you have any question about how the process works, please contact Pastor David. Children may take the wine at their parents discretion. Use the prayers provided below as guides to reflect upon and respond to what God is doing in your life.) P R A Y E R F O R T H O S E S E A R C H I N G F O R T R U T H Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. P R A Y E R O F B E L I E F Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. P R A Y E R F O R T H O S E S T R U G G L I N G W I T H S I N Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen. P R A Y E R O F C O M M I T M E N T Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. 12
Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy WORDS: JOSEPH HART, 1759; MUSIC: WILLIAM WALKER, 1835 Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, Weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, Full of pity, love and power. Chorus I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in His arms; In the arms of my dear Savior, O there are ten thousand charms. Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome, God s free bounty glorify; True belief and true repentance, Every grace that brings you nigh. Come, ye weary, heavy laden, Lost and ruined by the fall; If you tarry till you re better, You will never come at all. Chorus View Him prostrate in the garden; On the ground your Maker lies. On the bloody tree behold Him; Sinner, will this not suffice? Lo! th incarnate God ascended, Pleads the merit of His blood: Venture on Him, venture wholly, Let no other trust intrude. Chorus 13
P R A Y E R O F T H A N K S G I V I N G * Strengthen us, O God, in the power of your Spirit to bring good news to the poor and lift blind eyes to sight, to loose the chains that bind and claim your blessing for all people. Keep us faithful in your service until Christ comes in final victory when we shall feast with all your saints in joy. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor are yours, almighty God, now and forever. Amen. 15 What Does Discipleship at Redeemer Look Like? Worship Nurture Mission Culture To be a disciple is to be swept up in the mission of God in the world. Our ministries of nurture drive, support, and inform our lifestyle characterized by mission and pursuit of the peace of the city through creating culture. Worship The anchor and center of discipleship at Redeemer is our weekly Sunday worship and the nourishment we receive there that comes through the Word and sacrament as a means of God s grace. Nurture Our ministries of nurture are the means we use to encourage spiritual growth and development at Redeemer. They include the cultivation of an everyday discipleship church culture, community groups, education, and family life gatherings. Mission We know our discipleship with Jesus is maturing when we are motivated by the grace and acceptance of God to reach out to others. Practically we see the mission aspect of our discipleship on display when we pursue God s mission through doing acts of mercy and hospitality, serving our church community, caring for those who are suffering, serving the poor and oppressed, sharing the good news of Jesus with those who do not yet follow Jesus, and helping plant other churches that do the same. Culture Christians are called not to hide behind the walls of their distinct community but to take their new hearts, minds and perspectives into the surrounding communities as salt and light. As Abraham Kuyper contends, the believing community, gathered around Word and sacrament, must radiate beams of faith s light into the realm of common grace into education, art, science, politics, business, economics and the marketplace. This means that Christians are called to create public education institutions, build businesses, organize neighborhood groups, create charities, be artists and musicians and writers, and start political action groups. We are to make culture. As Jeremiah exhorted the newly exiled Jews in Babylon, Seek the peace (shalom) of the city (Jer. 29:5-7). Redeemer supports this effort through education and facilitating Christians banding together to support and encourage each other as they create culture. 15
