The prominent Spoon farm owned by her grandfather who inherited the property from his mother, Nancy Stafford Spoon Shoffer, who inherited it from her second husband, Michael Shoffner. As a child she heard many stories about what life was like on that farm during her mother s childhood (early 1900s) and some memories of her father s childhood as well. They still own many of the implements and tools that were used in the last half of the 19 th century (in fact, they still use a lot of them). Holt School (Class of 1951), to the Woman s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro (Class of 1955) to the University Frances continued...page 2

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Pleasant Hill Christian Church, 1707 Pleasant Hill-Liberty Road, Liberty, N.C Our quest to locate family Bibles began in 2001 when Trudie McPherson gave a report at one of the Fogleman Reunions. Hans George and Catharina (Goetz) Fogleman appear in documents related to Shrman s (also known as Saint David s) Union Church in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania in the mid 1750s. Per notes of Dr. Aaron Fogleman in "Notes on Foglemans and Related Families (Staley, Moretz, Fox/Fuchs, Loeffel/Spoon, Moser, and Long) in and around Alamance County, North Carolina, ca to the Present" last update: June 18, 2001: Catharina Vogelmannin (Fogleman), widow, appears numerous times in the church records of Low's Lutheran Church in Guilford County, North Carolina. She took communion there on 6 May 1805, 6 Apr 1806, 7 June 1808, 21 May 1809, May 1811, 2 May 1813, and Jan She witnessed/sponsored the baptism of Henrich and Nelly Fogleman's child on Sep 3, This shows that the church and religion was important to our early ancestors and that brings us to the issue of family Bibles. The early Bibles for our ancestors were in the German language and may or may not have contained family record pages. There is a very early Fogleman Bible in Pennyslvania but the family has not offered information about its content. There is a good possibility that the book belonged to a Fogleman family from North Carolina. Only time may reveal its content and location. There is another way that Fogleman descendants might help in the venture. You may contact used book stores in your area and inquire whether or not their stock includes old German Bibles. You might also stop to check out the books in local garage sales or flea markets in your area. Who knows when, how, or if we will ever locate that one Bible connected with the Vogelmann or Fogelman family. There have been no reports or activity on family Bibles. It does not, however, deter our goal in locating these precious treasures! You may contact Judie Lewis at (407) (cell) or at jlewis0@earthlink.net if you have information about a family Bible.

6 Fogleman Newsletter January April 2008 Vol. VII Issue IV & V Alamance Battleground holds celebration The Alamance Battleground site will be busy with historical reenactments during the weekend of the Fogleman Reunion. It will provide an opportunity for descendants to learn about a few of the methods that their ancestors used in cooking, writing, children s toys, and blacksmithing. Some of the Fogleman men were involved in Pyle s Defeat and possibly the Battle of Alamance. The author of a book about Pyle s Defeat, Dr. Carole Troxler, will speak about Sallie Walker Stockard. The presentation will begin approximately at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16. Sallie, who wrote Alamance County's first history published in 1900, was the first female to graduate with a degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Maybe a moment will avail itself for Dr. Troxler to answer questions about the Pyle s Defeat battle. Also, the John Allen log cabin is located at the Battleground. Letitia Fogleman, great-grand daughter of Hans George and Catharina (Goëtz) Fogleman, married John Dixon Allen.
