1 It s So Unfair and Unjust AUGUST 2016 VOLUME 29 ISSUE 7 For God is so pleased with you, when, for the sake of your conscience, you patiently endure unfair treatment. (I Peter 2:19) August/ September 2016 Edition Church Website address: ccscaz.org The Roadrunner is available on our website, or at the church. As I write these words, there are protestors in the streets of Milwaukee, protesting over the killing of Michael Brown. Brown came into contact with police after a traffic stop; he ran from the police and refused to drop the gun he was carrying, which was loaded with 23 rounds. Faced with an armed man who would not drop his weapon despite repeated warnings, is it difficult to see what else police officers could do? One person s injustice is another person s common sense, and some are all too willing to get onto the streets and cause trouble for the police and damage to other people s property. Peter is writing to fellow Christians, warning them that they are likely to face unfair and unjust treatment, not for what they have done, but simply for what they are: followers of Jesus Christ. Some of you will have read the biography of Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom. It is the remarkable story of a remarkable man. Mandela was imprisoned for 28 years, most of that time in solitary confinement. How Mandela went from the prison cell to the presidential palace is a story which must be read, and if it were a work of fiction, it would be dismissed as too far-fetched, too hard to believe. The greatest aspect of Mandela s story was his ability to forgive, and he describes his prison experience as life-transforming. It was during those long and lonely years that my hunger for the freedom of my own people became a hunger for the freedom of all people, white and black. I knew as well as I knew anything that the oppressor must be liberated just as surely as the oppressed. Nelson Mandela lived in a prison cell, but he didn t live as a prisoner. His willingness to forgive set him free long before his prison cell swung open for him. Your pastor and friend, Brian Anderson NEWS OF THE C ONGREGATIONAL C HUR CH OF SUN CITY N. 99TH AVE. 4 Sunday, August 21st is P A G E 4 National Senior Citizens Day. In 1988 Ronald Reagan, who was the US president at the time, declared August 21 to be National Senior Citizens Day. This observance was established in honor of senior citizens in the US who made positive contributions in their communities. The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens.
