2 Meet our Elizabethtown College Interns: We ve had quite a few Elizabethtown College Students support the museum through internships and class projects this academic year. What a wonderful bonus for the museum to have their strengths and insights put to work for us! Delaney s completed fall semester project has been a great success, and we look forward to seeing where these other extraordinary young adults take us. Delany Gunther Elizabethtown Chocolate History Exhibit Please stop in to see (and taste) this lovely exhibit that covers the history of Klein Chocolate company through to Elizabethtown s present day Mars plant. The exhibit will be in place through April. Kelly Locke Advertising and Promotional strategies Kelly is volunteering to help with our marketing and Advertising strategies for museum programs. She has some excellent ideas on how we can better reach the public and build a stronger membership base. Lauren Hower Documenting the Moose Building Lauren has taken on the overwhelming project of documenting the Moose building, which will soon be renovated to accommodate a new business. The Moose was built in 1928, and was designed by Lancaster Architect, C. Emlen Urban, A pretty neat piece of architecture we have there! Lauren Hower The top portion of a 1763 property deed, printed on lambskin at Ephrata Cloister, and signed by Barnabas and Elizabeth Hughes. Ben Martin, Nick Wagner, Gonzalo Dominguez, and Claude Abounegm are a team of seniors who are constructing a display case for our 1760s deed signed by town founders, Barnabas and Elizabeth Hughes. The deed, printed on lambskin parchment at Ephrata Cloister in 1763, is for the sale of one of the town s original lots. The double-sided document requires a unique display case that will allow a visitor to see both sides. It also needs a secure, climate- and light-controlled environment. Claude Gonzalo Abounegm Tyler Buskirk Dominguez Kyle Fackler Ben Martin Tyler Buskirk, Thomas Abell, William Gushue, and Kyle Fackler are a team of engineering students that are developing an interactive archaeological display for us. This display will allow children to work a dig, contained within a portable box. Using gloves and brushes, children will be able to uncover pottery shards and other artifacts. They can then identify, date and interpret their findings.

3 Dear Elizabeth Our Historic Advice Column The spirit of our town founder, Elizabeth Hughes (residing here from 1750 to 1760), offers her advice to our generation. If you have any advice needs from or a history question for Elizabeth, please send them to Dear Elizabeth, c/o Winters Heritage House Museum s ; winters-hh@embarqmail.com Dear Elizabeth, My husband and I raised two wonderful daughters, and yet we were so looking forward to being empty nesters. Our youngest child, age 19, left for college this past fall, and we ve only enjoyed six lovely months of peace and quiet before our oldest girl, unemployed, has announced she will be moving back home. At the same time, my mother-in-law is also planning to move in with us! Help!! How can I best restore my household? Dear Empty, Not so empty-nester How curious, my dear, that you ask for help on what appears to me to be a splendid arrangement! You shall have all the help you need now that you have four extra hands to assist you with daily chores and tasks. In addition, I would place your mother-in-law to work finding husbands for your daughters, immediately! If you will be open to my reproach, it is not well for young ladies to remain unwed into their twenties, and it sounds as if you have not been attending this, yourself. Surely, you realize it is not a good reflection on a young lady to remain unwed, nor is it flattering for her to attain too much education. Indeed! It will greatly hinder her prospects! I am certain your mother-in-law will help you to correct your failings. Honor her and respect her proper place as head of your household. Do look forward to the day you may reap a harvest when your daughters new husbands and, eventually, grandbabies, will add themselves to your nest! Elizabeth Dear Elizabeth, Whenever I visit the dentist, I am so glad I live in an age where we have such excellent dental care. In your time, people suffered greatly from poor teeth and gum disease. The thought of never brushing my teeth or having none left by the time I m thirty makes me want to cringe! Dear Concerned, Orally Concerned For the purposes of this missive, I will proceed in the generous assumption that your offensiveness springs not from a meanness of spirit, but from a position of ignorance. Our dental care is well-established in our daily habits and quite advanced for our day. Firstly, our diet is much superior to what your generation seems to prefer. We have no high fructose corn syrup, which you are want to add to everything. I have never had a candy bar or a soda in my life, while you probably haven t had a day without one or the other! Without such nonsense, our teeth fare much better. Secondly, while a toothbrush is not a usual item, it is common hygiene to scrub one s teeth with a damp linen cloth wrapped about one s finger and first dipped in salt. And finally, I will have you know that our barbers and blacksmiths are very qualified for removing an occasional offensive tooth. It is often that you will see strings of rotten teeth hanging in their shop windows that you might note their skill at drawing one wholly. While an extraction is indeed unpleasant, it is largely considered a problem of poor breeding. A quick practical check prior to nuptials may help one to avoid producing offspring with a poor mouth. I will make note that, in England, an upper society member s lost tooth is oft replaced via the donation of a live tooth from a commoner. Such donations are financially rewarded, therefore easily attained. The donor s living tooth is yanked, then inserted in the offending gap of the paying party, and held in place with silk floss or silver bands. It is usual practice, too, to harvest teeth from the deceased for similar purposes. My point here is that one can clearly see the rich advancements in dentistry that have been achieved in our day. Elizabeth

4 The Haldeman Mansion at Locust Grove Another exciting historic home (Dale Good) drop by in 2015, whether it's for the first time or not. You can tour the mansion, take in its PowerPoint histories, enjoy one or more of the special events or just sit on its wide porch and enjoy the scenery, the view, and listen to the rippling sounds of the river as its waters pass by on their way to the Chesapeake Bay. Geologists tell us the river has been following this course for the last 200 million years, so if you decide to wait to visit, chances are you won't miss the rippling sounds of the river, but you will miss out on so much more! Mark your 2015 calendars for the following dates: Most who are interested in the history of Elizabethtown and vicinity are aware of the Haldeman Mansion at Locust Grove, just south of Bainbridge in Conoy Township. If you have visited the historic mansion, you are aware of its scenic location and the grandeur of the mansion and its magnificent ginkgo, oak and sycamore trees. Jun 7 Noon-4:00 PM Strawberry Festival Jul 18 4:00-5:00 PM Victorian Tea Sep 12 5:30-7:30 PM Tavern Dinner Sep 26 TBD Paranormal Conference Oct 11 Noon-4:00 PM Fall Apple Festival Nov 14 8:00 AM-4:00 PM Kristkindtle Mart While Locust Grove's history is punctuated by the Haldeman Family, by their 70 year occupancy of the mansion, and being the 1812 birthplace of Professor Samuel Steman Haldeman, it's history is much more: native American villages, Scot-Irish fur traders, Revolutionary War soldiers and early industrialists. You know this, if you have toured the mansion or viewed the Power Point presentations provided at its special events over the past two years. The mansion will be open to visitors again this year on Sundays, 1-4 PM, Jun - Oct. Tours will be provided. What you may not know is the progress being made on the Northwest (Lancaster County) River Trail, which passes by the mansion, and nature's opening up the view of the Susquehanna River from the mansion last fall when a number of trees were felled by high winds. The trail is getting closer to completion. Pedestrian bridges now span the Conoy Creek and pass, under and around, the Shock's Mill Railroad Bridge about 1.75 miles south of the mansion. The latter provides the final link between Marietta and Bainbridge. It was officially opened on Saturday November 1, The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society invites you to Rodney Fink, former board member of the Elizabethtown Preservation Associates, passed away on Monday, February 23, We greatly appreciate Rodney s dedication and contributions to the Winters Heritage House Museum. He will be truly missed.

5 The Wearing of the Green A quick brush-up on your Irish history! The Wearing of the Green" is an anonymously-penned Irish street ballad dating to the Irish Rebellion of 1798, when the Irish rose up against the British. Green was the colour of the Society of the United Irishmen, a republican revolutionary organization. At that time, wearing green clothing, or even a shamrock in the band of your hat, was a sign of rebellion. Such a display of revolutionary insignia was made punishable by death. The song clearly mocks that policy, and its popularity in its day (and now, even) enforced the color green and the shamrock as important symbols of Irish pride. Here are two verses. Do hunt it down on you-tube to hear it! Oh, Paddy dear, did you hear the news that's going 'round? The shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground Saint Patrick's Day no more to keep, his color can't be seen For there's a bloody law again' the Wearing of the Green. I met with Napper Tandy and he took me by the hand And he said "How's poor old Ireland and how does she stand?" "She's the most distressful country that ever yet was seen For they're hanging men and women there for Wearing of the Green." But if at last our color should be torn from Ireland's heart Her sons, with shame and sorrow, from the dear old Isle will part I've heard a whisper of a land that lies beyond the sea Where rich and poor stand equal in the light of Freedom's day. Ah, Erin, must we leave you, driven by a tyrant's hand Must we seek a mother's blessing from a strange and distant land Where the cruel cross of England shall never more be seen And where, please God, we'll live and die, still Wearing of the Green. 6 In Remembrance of Two Elizabethtown Heroes article thanks to Mary Karnes and Dale Good The U.S. Congress in 1991 designated March 25th of each year as National Medal of Honor Day. It is fitting that this March newsletter set aside space to remember two citizens of Elizabethtown, who posthumously were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their bravery. They purposely sacrificed their lives that others may live. The National Medal of Honor day, March 25th is followed by the Month (April) of the Military Child and Military Spouse Day (May 8th). These dates have been set aside to recognize those who are all to often forgotten, who's sacrifices are most often unrecorded. More information on Second Lieutenant Reem and Sergeant Port, as well as their families is available in the Seibert Library. Second Lieutenant Robert Dale Reem earned the Medal of Honor during the Korean War for heroism on November 06, 1950 at Chinhung-ni, Korea. Second Lieutenant Reem left behind a wife of 17 months, 17 days. Official Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a platoon commander in Company H, in action against enemy aggressor forces. Grimly determined to dislodge a group of heavy enemy infantry units occupying well-concealed and strongly fortified positions on commanding Robert D. Reem ground overlooking unprotected terrain. 2d Lt. Reem moved slowly forward up the side of the ridge with his platoon in the face of a veritable hail of shattering hostile machinegun, grenade, and rifle fire. Three times repulsed by a resolute enemy force in achieving his objective, and pinned down by the continuing fury of hostile fire, he rallied and regrouped the heroic men in his depleted and disorganized platoon in preparation for a fourth attack. Issuing last-minute orders to his noncommissioned officers when an enemy grenade landed in a depression of the rocky ground in which the group was standing, 2d Lt. Reem unhesitatingly chose to sacrifice himself and, springing upon the deadly missile, absorbed the full impact of the explosion in his body, thus protecting others from serious injury and possible death. Stouthearted and indomitable, he readily yielded his own chance of survival that his subordinate leaders might live to carry on the fight against a fanatic enemy. His superb courage, cool decisiveness, and valiant spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of certain death reflect the highest credit upon 2d Lt. Reem and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. Sergeant William David Port earned the Medal of Honor for heroism during the Viet Nam War, in the Que Son Valley. He was not killed in the action that earned him the Medal of Honor, but was gravely wounded and presumed dead when heavy enemy fire forced his unit to withdraw. He was ultimately captured by the enemy. After ten months as a Prisoner of War, his wounds untreated, he died in captivity on November 27, His remains were William D. Port recovered and returned to the U.S. in August He left behind a wife and three children. Official Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Port distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman with Company C, which was conducting combat operations against an enemy force in the Que Son Valley. As Sgt. Port's platoon was moving to cut off a reported movement of enemy soldiers, the platoon came under heavy fire from an entrenched enemy force. The platoon was forced to withdraw due to the intensity and ferocity of the fire. Although wounded in the hand as the withdrawal began, Sgt. Port, with complete disregard for his safety, ran through the heavy fire to assist a wounded comrade back to the safety of the platoon perimeter. As the enemy forces assaulted in the perimeter, Sgt. Port and 3 comrades were in position behind an embankment when an enemy grenade landed in their midst. Sgt. Port, realizing the danger to his fellow soldiers, shouted the warning, "Grenade," and unhesitatingly hurled himself towards the grenade to shield his comrades from the explosion. Through his exemplary courage and devotion he saved the lives of his fellow soldiers and gave the members of his platoon the inspiration needed to hold their position. Sgt. Port's selfless concern for his comrades, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty are in keeping with the highest tradition of the military service and reflect great credit on himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.
