We will have an opportunity to learn about Golden Gate Community Center and serve those who take part in the activities there. Betty Mathis will meet with us to tell us more about the Community Center and its mission. As a part of Wesley Community Center and Wesley Health Center, Golden Gate Community Center is owned and operated by United Methodist Women. This is the only national mission with two health centers and is supported through pledges and mission giving. What can we do? How can we serve? Come and find out. Join us on March 25 th. REGISTRATION FORM is located on the UMW website: Kathy Schock, Vice President kathhuck@aol.com PAGE 1

2 Dear Sisters in Christ, In January my family celebrated the life of my oldest brother as we said goodbye to him for the final time. He was a gentle, compassionate man who was close to Christ all his life. Saying goodbye to Ray reminded me how quickly life passes. Truly, every day we breathe is a blessing and an opportunity to glorify God. Serving Christ is to glorify Him. We, as members of the United Methodist Women, have this unique opportunity to serve our God as remarkable communities of women. We educate ourselves, give sacrificially, raise funds, and support one another as well as women, children and youth close to home and around the world; and we advocate for justice. This we do all in the name of Jesus. During these past few weeks, I have resolved to draw closer to Christ and to serve Him with greater dedication through this extraordinary Christian organization of women. May God bless your local unit in a new way this year. With love and prayer, June Hanson, president East District United Methodist Women junehanson@juno.com We re finally there! The United Methodist Women s web pages (including the most recent district newsletters) have been moved to the new Desert Southwest Conference web pages. You can find us at: or more simply: Please be sure to bookmark one or the other web addresses so you can find us quickly. On our web pages you will find brightly colored boxes that will take you to many topics, including registration forms. I hope you enjoy the new look. Because we want all United Methodist Women and friends to know what is happening conference wide, we have combined the district lists with the conference list. If you haven t been receiving the Southwest Winds previously, it will now arrive the middle of each month in your s inbox. Be sure to save any issue you want to refer to later. Also, please be sure to print the and share it with anyone who doesn t have an address/computer. Pass the word that anyone can sign up to receive the Southwest Winds. The orange box on the web page tells how. If the word isn t getting out United Methodist Women and friends are losing out. Blessings, Bev Secrist, Desert Southwest Conference Communications Coordinator PAGE 2

3 We are bombarded with news these days. How do we tell fact from fiction? Can you remember when the front page of a newspaper reported facts? While we still have journalists, many persons giving the news seem to be actors, more than journalists. The area of Social Action requires me to be very cautious, as I share what I deem to be important and factual. A recent article about FAKE NEWS in January 29's FaithLink told of ways to discern fake and real news. Taken from NPR, the clues that an article might be fake are: Website ending with ".com.co", instead of ".com"; and, Identity of author(s) difficult to verify Lack of quotes. To further verify news, we can: Read some of the comments; Use Fact Check and Snopes; and, Perhaps the simplest method requires us to think: "If it s questionable news, it probably is." I will try to never send Fake News. FaithLink is a weekly resource of The United Methodist Church. Suzanne Hartley Social Action Liaison loafer.suzanne@gmail.com WHAT IS A MENTOR? Every local United Methodist Women s group in the East District has been assigned a mentor from the District Team. She may be your counterpart or other officer on the District Team. She is there to be a liaison between you and the District. She can answer the day-to-day questions of our organization, can help you with your goals, can present a program, and she will be a friendly face from the District Team. Please consider inviting her to your special events or a meeting or two. I hope you will share your directory and your calendar with her, too. The mentors are listed in the Leadership Event program booklet of January 21, If you do not know who your mentor is, please contact me at junehanson@juno.com There is nothing like making new friends - and your mentor is your friend! 4 This year it is very easy to complete the census because everything is on line. Please go to: Click on the pink square that says Census "Presidents: Click to complete the census Remember that we are in the Western Jurisdiction, and all the units are Local Units (except Friendship Village, which is a District unit). If you are confused by all the questions, just look for the little (*) next to the box asking for information. You need to add information to the following boxes: *Unit Name *District Name *Conference Name *Unit Type *Unit President President Phone Number (exception no asterisk) President (exception no asterisk) *Members as of 1/1/16 *Number of new members added *Members lost by death or other reasons The president can choose another person to fill in the census. Membership chair or the unit directory editor would be a good alternative. If your unit has no one who is computer savvy, and the church secretary is unable to help, please send the information to me by March 31. Kaye Rountree, Membership Chair for East District 117 E. 14th St Tempe, AZ arountree@cox.net United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. 5 On January 21, 2017, our District Leadership Enrichment Event was held at St. Matthew UMC. We celebrated our 2016 Mission Today Achievements including those units who had achieved their Five- Star Mission Giving goal. We had 12 units that earned their Five-Star Mission Giving Goal! We pledged $52,000 to conference, but through the generosity of East District UMW units we sent $56, to conference! It is an honor to serve with the generous ladies of the East District. The 150 th anniversary of United Methodist Women will be here soon just two more years. A way to strengthen and pass on our mission inheritance is donating to The Legacy Fund. It is a permanent endowment which will provide a firm foundation for the generations of United Methodist Women to come as they engage in mission with women, children, and youth. When fully funded, The Legacy Fund s income will ensure a regular source of support for the core expenses hopefully for the next 150 years! It s easy to donate to The Legacy Fund: *Online at: *By phone: : (8am- 6pm EAST, Monday-Friday) *Text: and enter Legacy150 in message area *By check: Office of the Treasurer, United Methodist Women 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY (Write The Legacy Fund Day of Giving on the memo line) March 23, 2017 is United Methodist Women's 3rd Annual Day of Giving and every gift made will be matched dollar for dollar! Mark your calendars and double the impact of your gift! A gift of $18.69 or $150 will commemorate the year that United Methodist Women was founded and the pending 150th anniversary. Please consider multiples thereof. For more information see and click on Leaving Our Legacy-United Methodist Women. Linda Moore, Treasurer East District Desert Southwest Conference lamphx@cox.net PAGE 5

6 COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS It was wonderful to see so many women at the recent Leadership Enrichment Event in January. I am reminded that it is our responsibility as United Methodist Women leaders to continually increase our membership and to mentor those members so they can develop their leadership qualities. It is important to have a nominations committee at the local level. This committee is an ongoing committee that sees the positions that need to be filled on their East District Team. In an ideal world, no position, with the exception of the treasurer, is held for more than four years. The minimum offices that need to be filled are president, treasurer, secretary, program resources and nominations. Other positions include spiritual growth, social action, education and interpretation, and membership nurture and outreach. Start early in the year to work on filling each position at the local level. If anyone is interested in serving on the East District Team, please feel free to contact me at mjmermer7@aol.com. Marilyn Seese, Chairperson for Committee on Nominations At the East District UMW Leadership Enrichment event in January our generous participants donated bedding and cash with a total value of over $600 for the new Halle Women's Shelter, a new UMOM facility that will open in April. Kaye Rountree, East District Representative on the UMOM Board, delivered the much-appreciated donation to Fara Walling, Special Projects Coordinator. UMOM staff was very appreciative.
