A Message from Our Vicar Which of these names is not in the Bible? Samson Apollos Alexander Rachael Barnabas Jemima According to research recently published by the Bible Society the Do you know the answers? children in Check on the inside back our country cover! have a very limited knowledge of even the basic Bible stories. A YouGov survey showed that from 1895 parents when they were asked to select Bible stories from a selection of Greek Myths, popular children s books and stories from the Bible only 14% got them all correct. What came out as more significant was that many of the children said they had never read, seen or heard anything of some of the most celebrated Bible stories! When questioned, a further 54% of the parents thought that the story line for Hunger Games came from the Bible and 27% saying the same for Superman! Whilst there may be themes that we can recognise within these stories surely it is quite surprising that so many adults, let alone children, believe these to be Bible stories. We have been challenged as churches within our Diocese to look at how we can reach the next generation with not just basic Bible stories but also with the good news about Jesus. We have now held three Storytelling services in church to encourage our children to engage with and enjoy some Bible stories and also some craft activities. Please look out for the rainbow they painted for the story of Noah. I m afraid the animal biscuits they made didn t last very long!
It s a wonderful opportunity to tell these stories and give children the opportunity to discover for themselves that God loves them. Our next one is Sunday 28 th September at 4pm in church. Please pray for the team as we get to know the children in our parish and help them to enjoy some more Bible stories Cathy 1st Sunday (in the month) 2nd Sunday 3rd Sunday 4th Sunday 5th Sunday Church Services All at 11.30am All age Worship (Family Service) Holy Communion (Book of Common Worship) Morning Prayer (1662 Prayer Book) Holy Communion (1662 Prayer Book Holy Communion (1662 Prayer Book Next Children s Storytelling Sunday 28 th.september 4pm

HMY BRITANNIA A Personal Reminiscence A talk by Captain Hugh Daglish on 6th May 2014 Captain Hugh Daglish was born and brought up in Oxton and attended Birkenhead School. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 19 and served for 36 years, including two years as commander of HMY Britannia. The crew of HMY Britannia was drawn from the Royal Navy and marines. At the time Captain Daglish served there the officer in charge was Rear Admiral Woodard but as he was busy with the royal family it was the job of the commander to make sure everything ran smoothly is the fortieth year of commission for HMY Britannia and the yacht has now steamed one million miles. Captain Daglish s tour of duty included the Queen s state visits to Russia and South Africa, on both of which she received a warm welcome. Captain Daglish explained that a state visit requires a very high degree of preparation, with the programme arranged in detail in advance and the whole yacht brought up to royal standard to ensure that everything is immaculate. For example, when the Queen visited South Africa in 1995 it took three and a half weeks to sail there and the day before her first visit, which was to Simonstown, any salt was washed off the hull using a hose with fresh water. The area around the royal apartments was kept very quiet to create a peaceful atmosphere where the Queen could relax after a tiring day.
The Queen also used HMY Britannia most years for a holiday of ten days in the western isles of Scotland. This was the only time in the year when she was completely free with no programme and no visitors and a boat would go ashore at first light to check a beach was safe before the Queen was dropped off there. HMY Britannia was at sea for eight months out of twelve most years. The crew were all volunteers who had to adhere to a very strict code of behavior and strict dress rules ashore in plain clothes as well as in uniform. Promotion was slower than in the rest of the Royal Navy but all jobs were done cheerfully and there was a good relationship between the officers of the yacht and the Queen s household. HMY Britannia was paid off in 1997 and is now a tourist attraction at Leith. Steve Fletcher proposed a vote of thanks to Captain Daglish for his talk and presented him with a cheque for the Soldiers Sailors Airmen Families Association. The evening ended with refreshments kindly provided by Lynda and her helpers. Susan The Oriel Singers in Concert We are delighted to welcome back the Oriel Singers on Saturday 25 th October at 7:30 pm. This concert will appeal to all audiences and can range from Bach to the Beatles or Gibbons to Gershwin with everything in between! Ticket details to follow.
Bell Matters St. Michael s Shotwick is blessed with a band of loyal and dedicated ringers. This means that on the vast majority of Sundays the bells are rung by a home band and on the odd occasion that we are short we import one of our friends from a neighbouring tower. Likewise, because the service at Shotwick starts relatively late, most of our ringers have already rung at another church before turning up at Shotwick. This leads my thoughts on to a service that was held for and attended almost exclusively by bellringers. In the sermon the vicar of the church told us that their church could do with a bigger attendance and how would we like to go out on to the streets and hand out leaflets and talk to people about religion, how many of us would like to volunteer, the vicar asked. I, along with most of the bellringers, shrank down in my seat nobody volunteered! There was a short silence as the vicar surveyed us, then she smiled and told us not to worry as we are already evangelists when we ring the bells and people hear them, sometimes at quite a distance. We hope their thoughts turn to the church and God, and that made me personally feel quite good! What a good summer we have been having so far, in fact it has been so good that on a couple of occasions we have been forced to use the air conditioning to make ringing the bells more comfortable (i.e. open the West door!). I hope the weather holds for Shotwick bellringers summer party! Frank.

A Brief History of Tithes and Glebe Land with a Local Flavouring In the early middle ages, a Norman knight would ask a local Abbot for a monk from the local monastery to come and minister spiritually to his serfs. Instead of returning to the monastery the monk was given accommodation of a sorts and strips of land to till or have tilled as an income or resource. In the Reformation, instead of one tenth of income from beneficed land going to Rome it went to the Crown and the newly formed Church of England. The dissolution of monasteries resulted in a further redistribution of land. Some of the land that had belonged to the Church was taken by the Crown and some was given into private ownership and the tithes were likewise transferred. The Incumbent of any benefice is the recipient of income from Glebe land. These so called tithes were originally physical goods equivalent to one tenth of annual income, and they were gathered in a tithe barn. There is one between Puddington and Burton at Barn Farm. As time went by, monetary equivalents became more common. The map in the bell tower at St Michael s is an example of a national exercise in the mapping and valuation of tithed land. This took place between the 1830 s and the 1850 s.
Sale of Glebe lands Act 1888 Glebe land is vested in the benefice. This Act was designed to encourage benefices to get rid of small unwanted parcels of land usually of a few acres. Fifty acres or more is a small holding and some plots were no more than the size of vegetable gardens. The glebe land then fell into local private ownership boosting the local economy and the associated capital was invested in stocks and shares by the ecclesiastical commissioners so that the incumbent of the benefice could derive income from the interest. By the 1800 s the stocks and shares market was sufficiently developed to act as a driver for improving clergy incomes. In 1948 the body governing Queen Ann s Bounty (a tax set up in 1703 for poor clergymen by Queen Ann) and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners that administered the sale of tithed land merged into a new body the Church Commissioners. By 1978 administration of dividends from capital associated with a benefice had been ceded to regional authorities: the Diocesan Boards of Finance. Example of record of sale of Glebe land to incumbent Revd Wansbrough in and 52 can you find them on the tithe map?
From the county map 1890 History of the tithed land at Plums houses fields, Shotwick lane. In 1929 the cottages were described as potentially condemned in a solicitor s letter- however they housed evacuees in World War 2! The Glebe components of Plums Cottages were valued at 68 an acre.
Henry William Roberts was born in the 1870 s and he held a number of roles on the PCC at St Michael s. He was a long-term Church Warden and supporter. In April 1942 he purchased glebe land of 0.27 acres by Plums Houses in Shotwick Lane. In 1952, Henry was living at Daleside on Woodbank Lane where he ran a business as a livestock haulier. In January 1952 Henry purchased the glebe land Plums Houses Fields. This is why these fields now form part of the property of Daleside. Jenny Flower Arranging On Thursday, 11 th September 2014 we will be presenting a flower arranging demonstration by Chris van Bergen. She will give a demonstration of how to make a windowsill arrangement and a pedestal arrangement. Admission will be 5 and there will be refreshments afterwards. 16 SAMUEL CLARKE Samuel Clarke ( ) was an English clergyman and significant Puritan biographer. At the age of seventeen he entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and was ordained in In 1624, as a young man of 25, he was appointed minister of Shotwick and his years at Shotwick were a resounding success. His preaching brought people from miles around flocking to hear him. On the 2nd February 1626, whilst at Shotwick, he married Katherine, daughter of Valentine Overton, rector of Bedworth, Warwickshire On 12 th November they had a son (also Samuel) who became an English Nonconformist clergyman known as an assiduous annotator of the Bible. As a student of Emmanuel College Cambridge Samuel Snr. had come under the influence of the Puritans and was in conflict for much of his life. After five years at Shotwick he was presented in the Chancellor s Court for the omission of church ceremonies and was forced to leave the parish in It is interesting to note that he wrote of his parishioners at Shotwick that I was never acquainted with more understanding Christians in all my life. He accepted a lectureship at Coventry but when he arrived in the town he provoked the hostility of its resident minister, Samuel Buggs, who banned him from his pulpit and threatened to present him to the diocesan courts. After a brief struggle, Clarke was forced to leave the town in Shortly afterwards, he was offered a second lectureship by the corporation of Warwick, Here again he was opposed by the incumbent minister, Thomas Hall, where complaints were still made of his omission of ceremonies. Despite this, he remained in the town until 1633, when Lord Brooke presented him to the living at Alcester,
Clarke went to London in 1642 after being appointed to the curacy of the delightfully named St. Benet Fink in Threadneedle Street. He occupied himself in writing books and was well known among the London clergy; was a governor and twice president of Sion College; and served on the committee of ordainers for London in He was one of the fifty-seven ministers who, 20 January 1649, signed a protest against taking away King Charles I life. Following the changes after the restoration to power of Charles II, two thousand Puritan ministers were ejected as Church of England clergy for refusing to conform to the Book of Common Prayer by St. Bartholomew's Day Along with two of his sons and four other members of his family Samuel Clarke was part of this group and retired to Hammersmith on 24 April He later moved to Isleworth, and spent his time in compiling popular books, chiefly on biography. His wife died 21 June 1675, while he passed away on 25 December All this from his first ministry at Shotwick! Harvest Festival Harvest Festival will be held on Sunday 12 th October at 3pm. There will be no 11:30 service that day. After the celebration of harvest there will be a harvest ploughman s served once again at Shotwick Hall. Watch out for the sale of tickets.
This photograph was taken around 1900 and shows the Church with the walls plastered and decorated. The plaster was removed in 1907, although traces of it can still be seen in places. Note the commandment boards either side of the altar prior to their move to the back of the Church when the organ was installed. Thanks to Brenda Lloyd for sharing this photograph with us.
